What is your review of the trailer of The Suicide Squad (2021 Movie)?
In the words of William Butcher, this trailer is f*cking diabolical. One of the most significant lapses of 2016's Suicide Squad was its inconsistent tone.David Ayer prefers to make straight-laced, hard-edged crime thrillers, and the head honchos at DC wanted Suicide Squad to replicate the irreverence of Guardians of The Galaxy. This time around, they've gone ahead and hired the man behind that movie. And if there's one thing you can expect James Gunn to nail, it's tone. That, and a few perfectly timed, perfectly placed needle drops. As a writer, Gunn has shown that he's particularly adept at fleshing out character dynamics and interplay; in fact, he positively revels in doing so.His innate sense of irreverence is plastered all over the trailer for The Suicide Squad in all its R-rated glory.Another aspect that immediately drew my attention was the colors. Gunn's movie appears to be irreverent not only in terms of tone but also with its use of color. While we can expect Guardians-like shenanigans and banter aplenty, what has my curiosity piqued the most is how Gunn utilizes the leeway the R-rating provides.Judging from the trailer, he's left no stone unturned to make this a bloody and brutal roller-coaster. For me, that's the ultimate takeaway – this movie looks like it's going to be a blast to sit through.Other takeaways:Margot Robbie continues to show just why her casting as Harley Quinn is one of the greatest comic-book casting decisions ever.Sylvester Stallone as King Shark is going to steal this movie.Joel Kinnaman seems to be enjoying his second outing as Rick Flag, freed from his duties as Colonel Exposition. The perfectly placed James Gunn needle-drop was perfectly placed. (Steely Dan's Dirty Work for those curious)Idris Elba is so ridiculously badass it's practically a joke. That cast is absolutely stacked. But there's one line in the trailer that gets at the heart of what James Gunn is attempting to do with The Suicide Squad."Oh my god, we've got a freaking Kaiju up in this shit!"That's the tone; that's the movie. That's The Suicide Squad experience distilled into 12 words.Buckle up your seat belts, we're about to enter Gunn-town, and it's going to be horribly beautiful. On the downside - I thought John Cena was supposed to be in this movie, I didn't see him anywhere.
Why does the President of the US seem to have such unbridled power? He seems to do what he wants, fire anyone that gets in his way, and doesn’t seem subject to the checks and balances that one would expect in a democratic society.
He doesn’t have that kind of power. It just seems that way. What he does have is an endless number of enablers, appeasers and collaborators in US Congress. The linchpin institution that is failing is the Republican-led US Congress. Congressional Republicans are unwilling to restrain Trump.Let us be absolutely explicit about this: The US Congress has the power to enact laws to rein in presidential powers (to limit abuse of power by Trump) or even depose him. Either way, Congress has the means to put an end to at least the consequences of Trump’s worst behaviors. The fact of the matter is that they have not done so.They have not enacted laws to:force the President to divulge his tax returns;force the President to put his properties in a blind trust;protect the special counsel, Robert Mueller, from being fired;formally enact a code of ethics governing the actions and behavior of the President;formally regulate white house staffing to prevent nepotism, militarization and various other abuses of office;formally regulate national security staffing to make sure that a treasonous president cannot subvert national security. These are just a few of the actions they could have taken. There are many more.Currently, the United States is governed by a majority of legislators whose true faith and allegiance is not for their country. These are not strong, independent men and women inspired by a love of country for whom it is second nature to think of themselves as the guardians of the nation. These are weak men and women of an inferior quality and nature. Instead of guardians serving the Greater Good, we have mere operatives, i.e., workers, bought and paid for by and beholden to a donor elite. As operatives for this donor elite their highest mission is to use the power of their office to promote the pecuniary interests of that donor elite, regardless of the consequences for society.Choices matter. They tell you a lot about the true character of people. That goes for legislators as well. This was evident from their priorities, which was not to protect the Republic (=America) against its enemies, foreign and domestic, but to enact various bills that bring huge financial benefits to the super rich.Instead of pursuing vigorous congressional investigations into treason, collusion, obstruction, corruption, unethical behavior and other abuses of office, they spent their valuable time on repealing Obamacare (which failed) and enacting a tax reform mostly benefiting the donor elite (which succeeded). One reason why they did not want to restrain Trump is that doing so would have interfered with their program of enacting bills in the interests of their donor elite. There was not enough time to achieve both objectives. (This may sound strange but managing Congress is a complex, time-consuming affair.)By their choices and priorities we gained a clear view on the true character of these congresspersons.A second, critically important, reason is that the Trump election fundamentally transformed the Republican voter base. The world outlook of Republican voters changed from supporting conservative ideology to Trumpian populism. We have millions of morally deficient voters who hoisted a piece of shit into public office. That they are morally deficient is by now a fact and no longer conjecture: they have continued to support him for over a year in spite of his vile and subversive behavior in office during that long and awful year. The congressional Republicans are in other words deprived of a natural constituency and have become clients of Trump, being dependent on endorsements from Trump. So we have a majority in congress that cares not about the country but about its standing with the donor elite and a morally deficient voter base.To understand the gravity of the situation one needs to read the Oath of Office for congressmen. Let us repeat that text below:“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”Read it well, because there is a lot in that Oath:· The oath makes clear that the first and most important duty of the congressperson is to support and defend the Constitution (meaning America) against foreign (Putin?) and domestic (Trump?) enemies. By swearing the oath the congressperson becomes a guardian, personally and directly responsible for defending the nation. He or she, as office holder, must personally act to keep America safe. This is the basis for the power to enact laws to restrain executive power or even remove him from office.· The key word in the Oath of Office is Constitution, NOT Constituency. The oath does not say that the congressperson must put his or her constituency or the vote or his or her agenda or the lobbyists or his or her donors first, and country last.· The oath means that the congressperson agreed to fulfill his or her obligations without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion. This means that he or she will not seek reasons to ignore or close his or her eyes to threats to the constitutional order and the nation, or argue that there is no threat when there is a threat, just because it is convenient to him or her or the donor elite.· The oath allows the congressperson to swear on his or her soul, so help you God. By so swearing, the congressperson, as a moral being, cannot be more profound, whether in good faith or in bad faith. It should be obvious by now in what momentously bad faith the current majority in Congress is operating. They are violating their Oath of Office. They are evading their duty as guardians. They have made themselves complicit in treason, collusion, obstruction, corruption, unethical behavior and other abuses of office. In doing so, these men and women have debased themselves and become traitors to the nation. This is what happens when money corrupts the electoral process. This is what happens when congressional seats can be bought and sold and staffed by mere operatives by moneyed interests. This is why the President of the US seems to have such unbridled power, why he seems free to do as he pleases, fire anyone that gets in his way, and does not seem subject to the check and balances one would expect in a democratic society. What can you do about this? Become a patriot by becoming a conscious voter. Go to election rallies, meetings and town halls. Start with making the Oath of Office the litmus test of all prospective candidates for public office. Make fellow voters aware of this principle. Get your fellow voters on board on this. Demand of the candidates that they demonstrate real understanding of and commitment to the Oath of Office. How do you do that? Make them spell out the name of the enemy. Make them spell out the crimes that will trigger them to fulfill their Oath. Make him or her swear to fulfill the Oath on the US flag. Make this an experience your congressperson will never ever forget for the rest of his or her life and strike fear in the hearts of the cunning and duplicitous. If they will not, you will have identified a creature unfit for office and most likely an enemy of the Constitution, again meaning America.Go spread the word.
There is an 11 year old child that started being friends with my kids a year ago. The 11-year-old and I have since become best friends. Is this wrong?
I mean, as an adult, you really probably shouldn’t be fostering close friendships with kids that aren’t your kid. If the kid thinks of you as a friend, and appears to be depending on you as a social outlet, then certainly you can provide a means for the child to have conversations and confide in someone they trust. But you, as an adult, have a duty of care and while it is okay to allow a child to hang out with you for a chat, you can never ever forget that its a child. You cannot use the child as an outlet as you would your adult friends, and you cannot be frank with the child or discuss your adult life and adult problems. You must consult the parents/guardians of the child if they attempt to broach a contentious subject or reveal something alarming. And really, you should encourage and advise the kid on how to make friends their own age.So yes, by all means be kind to the child and let them partake of your company if they need. But understand that it is NOT reciprocal and you have no right to rely on the child in the same way. It might be a friendship in the eyes of the child, but you are still an adult with a duty of care.
