You can make a topic sentence a statement of fact, but your instructor probably doesn't want you to because it might limit the focus of your paragraph.This is one of those style “rules" that teachers preach because explaining how to do a thing correctly takes too long, or isn't in the standards, or is beyond the student's level of understanding. It's like when elementary teachers tell children you can't begin a sentence with because. It's not that you can't, it's that explaining subordinate clauses and complex sentence structure to eight year olds is mind numbingly frustrating. The truth of writing is messy and subjective.You can use a fact as a topic sentence; it just narrows the focus of the paragraph, which can be limiting in argumentative writing and for writers who are still learning style and form (which, based on the wording of the question, OP is).Here's an example:The six quark flavors are up, down, strange, charm, bottom, and top.This is a fact, and yet, it begs for further development. What are the differences between the flavors? How do they act? When were they discovered? Why do they have such weird names? This topic sentence is open to a lot of development, depending on the thesis.So, to reiterate, you can use a statement of fact as a topic sentence, but you're probably not at a point in your development as a writer that you should.You'll get there, though. You don’t say if they are native speakers or ESL students.I suggest teaching WRITING SKILLS. I would drive home the concept of THESIS STATEMENT and supporting paragraphs with TOPIC SENTENCES.I would start out with basic persuasive essays, based on reading fun stories. For example, read scholastic stories about different topics, then ask students a question about it and have them write a persuasive essay to explain their opinion about the story.
