Donors rarely read ‘newsletters’. Think about it- how many newsletter do you read?Email ‘newsletters’ are read even less than printed one.Why are you writing a ‘newsletter’. That should be the guiding factor. If you aren’t conveying the news, why are you sending it as a ‘newsletter’?If it’s about the nonprofit, it violates the WIIFM principle- what’s in it for me.What would compel you read a ‘newsletter’? Look in your own life and determine why you would read a communication from a nonprofit. You know almost immediately it is a solicitation for money…Are you writing the same communication to every donor? That’s a mistake. Do you really believe the person who have $5 cares as much as the person who have $500? Treating them the same is a mistake for both.If this is an email communication, subject lines like ‘April Newsletter’ scream ‘DELETE!’Without more specific information about your nonprofit, the mission, the donors, and other research required for effective fundraising, I can only offer this generic guidance.

A hairdresser can conceivably have a million clients.However, it’s unlikely any hairdresser could handle a million clients concurrently unless they had a large support staff of assistant stylists and/or apprentices.Even then there are a lot of challenges with a hairdresser every seeing a million clients.A Famous Celebrity HairstylistAs an example, a famous female celebrity hairstylist who had iconic hair salons in New York and Los Angeles was known for having an army of hair assistants.She was the queen of short, shaggy crops, bobs and lobs and famous for a long list of Hollywood sweethearts with beautiful short blonde shags, crops, bobs, lobs and cuts.As reported by the hair media, when a hair client of the famous hairstylist arrived for their long awaited appointment at the celebrity stylist’s salon in New York or Los Angeles, they would be greeted by an assistant.Then their hair would be shampooed by one of the salon’s wash room attendants. Sometimes they might get a scalp massage or a deep conditioning treatment as well.Once their hair was washed and towel blotted, their wet hair would be attended to by an apprentice.After the client’s hair was detangled, prepped with high priced styling products and ready to be cut, the famous stylist would breeze in, grab a scissors, let their magic fingers fly and whip up a signature hairstyle.Then the famous stylist would breeze out and be on to the next client.According to popular reports, sometimes the celebrity stylist said nary a word to her star struck clients. She would pop up, the scissors would fly and she would disappear to the next client.It was reported that the famous hairstylist might spend an average of 10 minutes with each client creating their iconic cuts.If you figure 10 minutes per haircut, the famous hairstylist might see 5–6 clients an hour and maybe up to 40 in an 8 hour day, if clients were available that many hours.200+ Hair Clients Per Week?In a 5 day week the famous stylist might see 200 clients, in 6 days maybe they might see 240 or so.That would be an estimate of 800–1,000 clients in a month, which sounds super crazy to me, but with the proper apprentices, assistants and salon attendants, might be able to pull those types of number off.In one year, that might account for 10,000 to 12,000 clients, which is probably not really possible, but who knows, it might be doable.10 Years = 100,000 Clients?In 10 years that would equal 100,000 clients and that’s if the celebrity hairstylist could keep up that kind of insane non-stop pace.It would take the celebrity hairstylist approximately 100 years at the rate suggested and with full staffing to see 1 million hair clients.Unless they worked on multiple clients at a time, which might be feasible in some cases, its unlikely the celebrity hairstylist could see a million hair clients in their entire lifetime.A million hair clients for one hairstylist, even with celebrity status, huge salons and support staff, seems somewhat unrealistic.Of course anything is possible and you should never say never.Best wishes to you.Update: April 16, 2018I was thinking about this question and discussed it with my male partner.He pointed out to me that a hairdresser might have an email newsletter list with a million subscribers.In that case, the hairdresser might count those subscribers as “hair clients” and thus a million clients might be possible.Of course this would be stretching things a bit, but for the sake of argument, it could be a possible explanation.Also, if there were a scheduled and choreographed event designed to promote a huge gathering of prospective hair clients for one particular hair stylist, that might work as well.The Guinness Book Of World Records?A friend of mine went to a special event in Dallas in 2012 promoted by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey as part of International Clown Week.The event was designed to compete for the title of the world’s largest shaving cream pie throwing battle and was designed to get included The Guinness Book Of World Records.If a hairdresser wanted to become famous for having a million clients, they might put on some sort of major event to solicit participants.Of course it wouldn’t be easy or inexpensive, but it certainly could be handled by a major brand or media agency.
