PDF Editor FAQ

Around 82% of international students from NUS/NTU/SMU in Singapore get approved for permanent residence. I am among the bottom 18% who has been rejected twice. What could be the reason behind this?

I have an ex-classmate,friend that WAS of Indian citizen. I would say that his family is above average. My friend’s dad has been trying to apply for PR for a few years and each time they rejected to grant his family PR status in Singapore. I asked my friend, “what’s the reason for Immigration Checkpoint Authority(ICA) to reject your family’s appeal for PR?”He said,” They already have reached or close to reaching the quota for Indian citizens in Singapore, so they can’t give out anymore.”I was kinda shocked yet not surprised given the Increase in number of indian workers coming to SG to work/migrate/live here.It was only on June 2019 that ICA sent a PR status letter. The letter stated that my friend’s family have been granted SG PR status! Happy for him yet at the same time abit sad. He was supposed to enter NTU this year but since he has reached the age of 18. Guess what other letter also came? A letter from CMPB- please report to Home Team Academy(HTA) on XXX date… He’s still in HTA training to be a NSF police officer. Sorry for the side-track story haha.Based on my friend’s experience in getting a PR status, I’m pretty sure ICA take into account a lot of other factors- your family background/any diplomatic relations/conduct of service/race(?) etc.One thing I do know for sure that the Government is slowly reducing the intake for PR status because “the MRT is freaking crowded!”.

Why is it not advisable to do a PhD from IITs?

I have completed my PhD from an IIT (ranked in top 10) located in north India. All professors are not bad/selfish, but it is tough to reach to good ones. They are not much visible/active in the outer world, which is full of gaining false image.Few will have a pleasant stay in IITs but believe me not for everyone.Well, PhD is more about your guiding professor rather than IIT. Selection of the supervisor is crucial, and it will decide your PhD & even post PhD life to an extent. Do your homework well in advance before fixing your professor. Best is to talk to his PhD students (> 1) & other prof PhD students (> 1) about your tentative professor. Visiting the professor website (homepage) helps, but it might be a trap for you. People other than who worked closely with him (her) rarely knows him. Once decided, remember your PhD is in his hands & he/she will write a recommendation letter for your post PhD.You may find similar PhD life in other IITs as it is common in India. Now coming to MY PhD (group) experience in IIT...A group of well educated & diverse talent from Industries/NITs/IITs/other universities will work full time for building the right image of your professor sitting in an office (also known as Lab) getting salary (stipend/scholarship) from the government. Remember, once you joined under him/her, you will work for him/her only, not for your research or government projects. If you get enough time/motivation after his shitty work, then you are allowed to do your research work. And of course, there will be continuous pressure for research publications.Learnt the following things1. How to make PPT for project proposals, project review meetings, consultancy projects, TA subjects etc.2. Writing national/International projects proposal3. Writing reports for consultancy projects, project review meetings, my research progress.4. Processing project tenders, negotiation with vendors regarding different projects purchase, developing labs5. Defending projects in front of diverse professionals from other IITs, NTU, MIT, WSU, Texas University, NSU, waterloo & Ontario tech university (Canada), DST scientist etc. (to name few).6. (one of the most annoying & irritating) Processing bills claimed by my professor, managing his travel, preparing slides, contents, scripts for him.7. Corruption (not for me): claiming fake bills, claiming salaries for fictitious project staff or technician or even for real ones, false technical reports.8. Writing awards (obviously not for me), fellow; e.g. ASCE, IEEE, ASME etc. It doesn't matter whether he is that capable or not.9. Repairing his house furniture gave me a different exposure10. Monitoring other PhD juniors, other project staff11. Preparing question papers for his subjects (including mid-sem, end-sem, tutorial), in a few cases preparing slides for his teaching subjects so that he can deliver his lectures (worst will be to make him understand these slides). Checking students tutorial & exam copies. Even taking lectures for 1st year. Taking his experimental labs. Now if I found some free time, energy, motivation & a will to do work, I will think of doing my research. However, I may end up being (electronic) social or playing a game or browsing youtube. Here comes a deadline for writing a paper from your professor. He may make you realize that you are a waste fellow, you can't publish an article in your PhD life, not efficient, you can't complete your degree. These are motivating words from his side (this is what he thinks). Every possibility to go abroad (top universities) will die with his simple NO.Their lust for power, money, awards, publication & position will tear you out & KNOWINGLY you will serve him.In either way, you will be an example to others. If you are lucky enough to get a few publications, you will set the trend for juniors & if not a single research publication, juniors will continuously be reminded with such examples. There is a possibility that after doing this much, you have not served him/her well. No one will understand you except your couple of colleagues. Now, many with their pleasant experience in PhD will disagree with this. I fully respect that. But either people who experienced this life or knew about this will agree with me.I don’t want to be a hero, by taking a stand against it or reporting it to the higher authority. I hope you will understand my plight.Try pursuing PhD in abroad; it is much easier than getting in IITs. IITs are hardly suitable for PhD.There is nothing like ethics, moral values, but greatly you will find their EGO everywhere. Again I will say, all professors are not like this, few golden professors will be there but hard to reach out.
