PDF Editor FAQ

Do private schools offer reduced lunching rates for low-income families?

Yep.If it’s a nonprofit private school (most are), the federal government (which runs the free/reduced school lunch program for low-income families) will cover it.Other federal education programs, like Title I, also apply to students in nonprofit private schools.

What is one thing your kid came home and told you one day that made you want to go to school the next day and go off on the principals and teachers?

My daughter came home from school and told me that her gym class watched a movie about jumping rope. I asked if they then tried what they saw. She said no. I didn’t go off on the teachers, I took my daughter outside and we “tried out” various ways to jump rope. I am no good at double dutch, but I can manage most other forms. I did take her to participate in a double dutch workshop at our YMCA. I was very disappointed with our physical education program in elementary school. It no longer involved actual physical movement. I was told I was elitist and presumptuous to think everyone could move as easily as I and they didn’t want children to feel self concious about their bodies. Yeah, we enrolled in extra curricular sports. My daughter played baseball and youth soccer until Middle School. I think the policy was elitist as families who couldn’t afford to pay for extra curricular activities missed out.

What bothers liberals most about conservative beliefs or mindsets?

Conservatism often punches down.Just today I read something by a lady describing why she is a conservative. Basically, she was on welfare for awhile but because she worked hard and got an education it made her feel angry at anyone who received benefits for their children through the headstart program… Think about that for a minute, this self-professed Christian woman is basically saying that it’s not right that children born to families poorer than hers should be given these benefits because it’s “unfair”. I can’t help but feel like that’s a whole collection of sins ranging from envy to lack of compassion, not to mention that it’s extremely judgmental because she had no information other than what she observed from a distance. Can you imagine if everyone who was higher up in the social strata thought that way about everyone less fortunate? In that scenario, I could dismiss her as someone who doesn’t deserve anything from the rest of us because well, I’ve managed to live my life without taking any benefits from anyone, she should just work harder. Also screw her children, they had the bad luck to be born into the wrong family. Pretty nasty right? These kinds of statements are something I hear with regularity from conservatives and it disappoints me because I think that it’s just a lie that has been told over and over again so that too many people believe it. The myth of the lazy poor person that is “taking your benefits” really needs to die. It’s petty, cruel and beneath people of good moral character, whether liberal or conservative.
