What is an example of a simple flaw in a perfect crime?

What is an example of a simple flaw in a perfect crime?Lawrence Horn worked as an American music producer in the 1960s and the 1970s. However In 1990, he was laid off. He quickly got deeper and deeper into debt. Even worse he was late in $16,000 of child support to his ex wife, Millie Horn. Also Lawrence Horn was to inherit 1.7 million dollars, (3 million dollars today) from his disabled son’s trust fund should he die.So Larry Horn decided to have his ex wife, Millie Horn, and his disabled son Trevor Horn murdered, and the nurse, Janice Saunders, murdered. This is where James Perry comes in.James Perry was a friend of Lawrence Horn. Over a course of a year, they had planned the murders. He used the book Hit Man: A Technical Manual for Independent Contractors to help plan and execute the murders. On March 3, 1993, James Perry traveled from Detroit, Michigan, to Millie Horn's home in Silver Spring, Maryland. He quietly went through the back door, next he shot the nurse, Janince Saunders, with a silenced AR-7, and he pulled the air tube from Lawrence's son, Trevor Horn. The machine made a sound when the tube was disconnected. As Millie Horn went downstairs to investigate, she was shot and killed. Perry escaped in the Horns’ minivan. Millie’s sister later discovered the bodies.Investigators got hold of telephone logs. They discovered a call to a payphone near Silver Spring, Maryland. James Perry took every possible precaution, he staged the scene to look like a burglary, he drilled out the serial number from his weapon. However, he made one simple mistake: He checked into a motel near Silver Spring, Maryland, and his ID was recorded. Investigators got hold of the motel records and they found his name. James Perry became a suspect, and investigators were able to solve the crime. His book suggested to pay in cash at the motel; however, the motel asked for ID. If James had slept in his car instead of checking into a motel, he wouldn't have been a suspect. Investigators say without the motel record, the case would have never been solved. James Perry risked being a suspect and spending the rest of his life in prison, so he could sleep more comfortably for one night. I don't know what he was thinking at the time. However, I feel James Perry looked back, and regretted that one simple mistake that could have easily been avoided.James Perry was sentenced to death, and died of an undisclosed illness in 2009. Lawrence Horn was sentenced to life in prison, and died in prison in 2017.Sources:Lawrence Horn - Wikipedia

Why do pilots say Roger on the radio? What does a pilot mean when he says, Roger?

Have you seenThe Lavender Hill Mob - Wikipedia1951 film directed by Charles Crichton The Lavender Hill Mob is a 1951 comedy film from Ealing Studios , written by T. E. B. Clarke , directed by Charles Crichton , starring Alec Guinness and Stanley Holloway and featuring Sid James and Alfie Bass . The title refers to Lavender Hill , a street in Battersea , a district of South London , in the postcode district SW11 , near to Clapham Junction railway station . The British Film Institute ranked The Lavender Hill Mob the 17th greatest British film of all time . The original film was digitally restored and re-released to UK cinemas on 29 July 2011 to celebrate its 60th anniversary. [2] Henry Holland ( Alec Guinness ) is dining with a fellow Briton in a posh restaurant in Rio de Janeiro where he is well known. He relates a story explaining his presence in Rio. It seems he was an apparently unambitious London bank clerk in charge of gold bullion deliveries for over 20 years. He had a reputation for fussing over details and suspecting all cars he observed following the bullion van, but all in all appeared to be a man dedicated to his job and the gold's security. In fact, he had hatched the "perfect" plot to steal a load of bullion and retire. The one thing stopping him had been that selling the gold on the black market in Britain was too risky, and he was at a loss as to how to smuggle it abroad. One evening a new lodger – artist Alfred Pendlebury ( Stanley Holloway ) – arrives at Holland's boarding house in Lavender Hill . Pendlebury owns a foundry that makes presents and souvenirs that are sold in many resorts, including foreign ones. Noticing how similar the foundry is to the place where the gold is made into ingots , Holland decides that the ideal way of smuggling the gold out of the country would be as Eiffel Tower paperweights sold in Paris, and puts this hypothetically to his new friend: "By Jove, Holland, it's a good job we're both honest men." "It is indeed, Pendlebury." When Holland suddenly finds that he is about to be transferred to another department at the bank, he and Pendlebury quickly move into action. They recruit two petty crooks, Lackery Wood ( Sidney James ) and Shorty Fisher ( Alfie Bass ), to help them carry out the robbery. The plan is simple but clever, and it succeeds: Wood and Fisher carry out the hijack of the bullion van and switch the gold to Pendlebury's works van. Holland, who is supposedly assaulted and almost drowned in the robbery, becomes the hero of the hour. The police find themselves running around in circles, unable to track down the "master criminal" who is in fact right under their noses giving them false statements and misleading clues. Meanwhile, Holland and his associates melt the gold in Pendlebury's foundry and export it to France disguised as miniature Eiffel Towers. The plan goes wrong when the woman running the souvenir kiosk in Paris misunderstands her instructions due to a language mixup - the box of gold towers is marked with an 'R' (for 'Reserve') bhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lavender_Hill_MobIn this a bunch of about to retire bank employees decide to rob their bank. While briefing hi s co-conspirators, Alec Guinness asks “does everyone know know what he has to do?” One bloke replies “Edgar.”“Edgar? What does that mean?”“Isn’t that what you say when you have understood?”“No you fool. The name is Roger.”In the old spelling alphabet - Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog etc - “R” was Roger. R is the shorthand in writing messages for “Received” and when spoken it became Roger.“R” has now become Romeo. Somehow to reply to a message with “Romeo” doesn’t sound quite as nice as Roger.Another common short term is “wilco” meaning “will comply”.BTW, in the movies you often hear someone saying, with or without Roger, “Over and out.” This is meaningless. “Over” is short for “over to you” which means your turn to speak. Unlike telephones, most radios are simplex instruments and only one person can speak at a time. When you press the transmit button, the receiving circuit is cut off. “Out” means “end of transmission” and no response is required. When logging a call “Roger Over” becomes “R K” and “Roger Out” is written as “R +”

As a military personnel, have you ever disobeyed your commanding officer for a good cause, and why?

When I was the Navigator on the USS HARTFORD (SSN 768), we spent the first 4 months in drydock, so I took my Navigation team to the navigation simulators at Submarine Base Groton 3 or 4 times a week.A lot of this training included lessons learned from other subs that had run aground, had collisions, or any other kind of mistakes that had got their Captains fired. I stressed to my team that every big mistake actually turned out to be a series of small mistakes, and each watchstander bore the profound responsibility to call out whatever small problem that they happened to catch so that everybody could analyze it and we could evaluate how to move forward. The Navigation team from Squadron 4 told us that we were the best Navigation team in the Squadron. So, when we came out of drydock, we took her to sea using all the skills that we had been practicing. The trip out was very smooth. Operations in the local operating area went very smooth. Testing all the equipment that we had worked on went very smooth. In fact, we got done with our tests 4 hours early and the Captain decided to head back home.We weren't supposed to get back until noon, but we arrived at 8 am. We radioed Port Operations that we were ready for a tug, but they said we would have to wait for a couple of hours. We said OK, and then the Captain, who was up on the bridge with the Officer of the Deck, called down and told us that he wanted to do some surfaced maneuvering training. Sounds good, let's go for it - that's what we've been training to do.But the very next thing he said was “We are going to do figure 8’s around the two channel entrance buoys.”The entire Navigation Team all immediately stopped what they were doing and looked at me. The last navigation incident that had happened in Groton was one of the subs in Squadron 12 had hit one of the channel buoys and dragged it 200 yards. Their CO had been fired before they shut down the reactor.Did our Captain just say we were going to intentionally drive circles around the only thing that could possibly cause a collision?I picked up the 21MC (one of our communication circuits that everybody in Control and on the Bridge can hear) and said “Bridge, Navigator, recommend we head south 2 miles to practice surface maneuvering away from the channel traffic and buoys.” I thought that was pretty good 'forceful backup.’ I also thought that it would be a real shame to get fired on my first underway. The Captain responded “Nav, Captain, we are going to do man overboard drills using Buoy #2 as the target.”Holy Shit. The Assistant Navigator said “Well, it's his ass that is on the line,” While my QM1 who was on primary plot said “Nav, this feels like the start of a big mistake.”I picked up the 21MC and said “Bridge, Navigator, I strongly recommend that we practice man overboard drills in an area that has no traffic. I have an Oscar right here ready to throw overboard” (When we practice man overboard drills, the cooks wrap an empty 5 gallon milk carton in aluminum foil, and we call it 'Oscar' and use it to simulate a person in the water)“Nav, Captain, report bearing and range to Buoy 2”My team saw that this was going to happen, so they got back to their jobs to try to do whatever they could to keep us from hitting those buoys, but it felt pointless because things happen very fast on the surface, and there is not much that the team in Control can do to change things.I grabbed the 21MC and said “Bridge, Navigator. Request Captain JA.” I was asking the Captain to pick up the sound-powered telephone so we could have a more 'private' conversation. I held the headset to my ear, and a minute later I heard “Captain.” I said, “Captain, I don't want you to feel like I am afraid to do my job on the first time that you have to see me in action underway, but that Buoy got SAN JUAN fired (in the Navy, the CO of the Boat can be addressed using the name of the Boat). This is a bad idea because we don't have to do this. Please, let's go somewhere else and practice.” He said “Nah, it's a nice day and we have good visibility, it will be good practice. Anything else?”I hesitated a moment. I didn't want to say it. I have never heard anybody else ever say it in my entire career, and I certainly hadn't ever contemplated saying it myself. But it had to be said. “Captain, I am making a Deck Log entry that says I disagree with this course of action.” He said, “If you think that is the right thing to do, you do what you have to do and we will talk about it when we get back to port.”I hung up the phone and directed my QM to make the entry in the Deck Log. He did, and then I picked up the 21MC and said “Captain, Navigator. I have logged my objection in the Deck Log.”He responded “Nav, Captain, Aye.”A minute later, the OOD rang up Ahead Full and ordered left full rudder, steer course 180. We drove south two miles and let all the Junior Officers drive the ship while we practiced man overboard drills. When we got back to port and everything shut down, the Captain called me to his stateroom. I didn't know what he was going to say, and I didn't know what I was going to say. I felt bad that I had logged my whiny objection permanently in the Deck Log for no reason.“Sir”“How do you feel about our little fight today?”“I feel like you think I'm a pussy, and I'm worried that this is not going to be a very good tour for me.”“Squadron says you've done a good job training your team. They are getting the Navigation “N” this year. That's a nice accomplishment during your first year on board. But I needed to find out how your team works when things go wrong. I think you did exactly what you should have done, and I'm pleased to have you as part of my team. You didn't really think I was going to do figure 8’s around the entrance buoys, did you?”
