I say “attempt" and not “accomplish” because true learning requires engagement, repetition, and connection of new information to existing information. If we don’t account for that or the presenter of the material doesn’t account for that, we will just fool ourselves into thinking we learned something because it will be forgotten.Comprehension LevelOn-line learning is less efficient at the Comprehension level. Comprehension requires a lot of interaction. It requires challenging preconceptions and replacing them. While that can be accomplished on-line, it is rarely done well on-line and is costly. Without adequate built in testing, the system cannot adapt to the student’s needs when they begin to struggle.Application LevelOn-line learning may not be at all appropriate for application level or it may be ideal, it depends on what is being learned. If the student is learning to perform a task that will be done with a computer, it can be ideal. But, if the student is learning an off-line task, the learning suffers. A student will never master a judo throw via online training, but coding or using spreadsheets can be done ideally, on-line. However, it does require an excellent feedback system.
