Its a fairly straight forward outcome based on the text of the Constitution. The Constitution says very little about how electors should be selected (what it does say is fairly irrelevant). As a basic matter, each State was free to select its own method for doing so. And from the start, all sorts of methods were used.One notable point is that nothing in the Constitution requires that the electors be selected by popular vote. Several states initially had the electors selected by the State Legislature. Also, nothing in the Constitution requires winner take all for a State's slate of electors. These are customs that have developed, but not constitutionally required.Once you start with the premise that the Constitution does not regulate the method for selecting electors, the outcome of the case is clear. The power of the State to specify how electors are selected included the power to compel electors to vote as they originally pledged to vote. And the lawful remedy for violating the pledge included removal of the elector and replacement with a substitute who will vote for the winner in that State.The counter argument is based on the text of the Federalist Papers and the clear intentions of some of the drafters of the Constitution. The original idea was that leading community figures (who would be the electors) could be trusted to make the right decision, including a decision contrary to the electorate if a vote had been held. The drafters (Madison in particular) did not contemplate winner take all slates that rubber stamped the majority vote, and were in fact appalled by that unanticipated development. If enough are absent such that no one gets 51% of the votes, then the election is thrown into the House which would vote in Trump based on how that works. A number of the swing states that would go for Biden are controlled at the state level by the GOP (due to massive 2010 gerrymandering). Trump would seek to bar certification of those electors based on bogus claims of fraud and rely on local GOP control to prevent the selection of electors.
