Designation of the army officers varies time to time and places to places. He has to be a ‘Jack of Lacks’. He can be appointed in any of the many designations tenable by his rank. The entire army has major three branches in every unit, formation or establishment i.e. GS Branch, Administrative Branch and the QM Branch. GS Branch deals with the policy making, strategy planning and training. The A branch is responsible for general administration, discipline, manpower management, pay and allowances, leave, promotions, welfare etc. The Q Branch is responsible for material management, inventory control, rations, transport, Fuels, Oils and Lubricants, housing, movements and logistics etc. In units the GS Branch is held by the 2 i/c [ 2 nd In Charge ], The A Branch is under the Adjutant and Q Branch is under the Quarter Master. It is the prerogative of the Commanding Officer who finds the ‘ Right Choice for the Right Job at the Right Time ‘. In the bargain the CO makes his own ‘ Coterie ‘ and selects his ‘ BEBs’ or the Blue Eyed Boys whether they deserve or not but that way he kepps under his thumb which encourages corruption in the army.Every soldier [ Officers and JCOs/OR ] has his rank. On joining and on successfully completing the training the officers get the rank of Lieutenent [ Earlier it was Second Lieutenent ]. He gets his further promotions on completion of requisite length of service and qualifying the promotion examinations. Same thing is with the JCOs/OR [ Junior Commissioned Officers and Other ranks ]. A soldier gets the rank of a Sepoy [ Private ] and gets further promotions on completion of length of service and promotion examnations. All promotions are subject to favourable ACRs [ Annual Confidential Reports ] and clean record without punishments. Selection Grade promotions are not bound by the seniority. A junior offficer may sepersede his senior one in selection grade promotions.

The ASC supplies all types of rations , fresh & dry, POL,, fodder etc to all Army units. There is a quantum or scale authorised per person / vehicle/ animal for each item. There is also a proportion called GS Reserve of dry ration & POL which cannot be used unless permitted by the GS branch of the formation. This is to ensure emergency stocking to cater for war or natural calamities, when supplies can be disrupted.

TA GS Branch “L” Block Church Road New Delhi which is followed by a Medical Board at New Delhi (Armed Forces Clinic) and Police Verification for shortlisted candidates.
