That depends on what the goal of the Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) is.There are two main reasons for one:The employee is going to be fired and you need documentationYou want the employee to fix a few thingsCase 1 is much more common than Case 2. However, you want pretty much the same structure. It's just that in Case 1 you pick the goals a little differently.StructureYou need to list each item that the employee needs to improve on. Such as "Write better answers on Quora."There should be a discussion/documentation about why this performance has been subpar in the past, such as "Too many answers get downvoted and it makes employee look bad."There should be a SMART goal - Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Timebound. Such as "Employee shall provide 50 answers on Quora over the next 30 days and no more than 3 should get downvoted"Sometimes there's a listing for "Potential barriers raised by employee" - such as "Company expects me to answer really hard questions."Also in there should be some method for helping the employee. "Employee to run answers by manager prior to posting for help in reviewing content of answer."Someone should be responsible for verifying if the goal was reached or not. Usually the manager.And review the plan and progress toward it on a regular basis.That's pretty much all you need for Case 2 - "helping the employee."Case 1 - "documentation for firing" - takes a little more cleverness to set up.The trick is to make the goals vague or impossible to reach. Such as "employee will get along better with coworkers" or "employee will put forth a more professional image." Or "employee will do 4 times as much work as they have been doing." Or "employee will finish project X within 30 days" when you know there's know way the testing for that project can be done within that period. Put enough of these in there, and make sure you're the one deciding the outcome, and you can make sure that they're set up to fail.If somehow you keep setting unrealistic targets that the employee keeps reaching - just keep putting them on subsequent Performance Improvement Plans until they get the message and resign on their own so that you don't have to fire them.

It has changed the direction and shape of West Bengal.
