Like Allison Brown said, lying about everything… even unimportant things… even when they know they’ve been caught, they keep lying. I sometimes set my iPad to do a time lapse of my classroom as the students work (yes, I’m allowed to do that), then show students evidence of their cheating, disrupting the class, being off task, etc… Even after watching the video, they will lie about doing what I’m accusing them of doing. Some students lack any sort of a conscience at all when it comes to lying.Asking me questions that I literally just answered, or that I’m going to have to tell everyone anyway, if they’d just be patient. The “what are we doing today” questions as soon as they walk in the door are a particular pet peeve of mine. I’m going to have to tell everyone what we’re doing in a second anyway. Just be patient.Talking when I’m trying to teach. There’s a time and a place for side conversations. I’m one of the most permissive teachers when it comes to this. As long as you’re getting your work done, I don’t care if you chat quietly. Just don’t talk when I’m talking to the whole class. That’s all I ask. Some students don’t get it. Which brings me to my next point…Only responding to yelling or threats. I hate yelling at students. I hate threatening them. But, for some students, that’s all that works. There is usually a progression of attempts to get students to behave that ends with yelling and disciplinary action being taken. These students ignore everything up until that point.Complaining about everything. Whatever you’re teaching that day, they already don’t like it. They think it’s dumb. No matter what teaching method you’re using, they think it’s the wrong one. They don’t like who they’re sitting near. The seats are uncomfortable. It’s too hot or too cold in the room. If you give them free time, they just complain about that too.
