I grew up in the town of Dedham, MA. Dedham is a moderately historical town, known for having the oldest house in the nation, the Fairbanks House, which was built in 1636. It’s quite a place to visit and has many interesting historical artifacts. It was also the home of the Avery Oak (a famous oak tree owned by one of the early settlers of Dedham) and Dedham Pottery, which is prized for the crazing of the enamel and bluish color.Dedham PotteryDedham is the county seat and contains courthouses and jails and very chi-chi historical section called “Precinct 1” where rich people live in ancient homes that are controlled by a historical commission.There are many things about Dedham that I never knew until I left. One of them was the Powder House, a small, hidden powder building used during the Revolutionary War.It also has a small “mountain”, more of a hill, called Mt Wilson that contains a large, secluded park with trails going many miles into the hills and meadows and meandering along the Charles River. I only recently started hiking and biking these trails. Dedham also has the Dedham Community House, where comedian Conan O’brien worked as a child. My sister also worked there and knew him and said he would arrive on bicycle and was a cut-up even then but very shy around girls because of his red hair. Long after I moved out, an old house was renovated only to discover that it had been a forge during the Revolution and many archaeological artifacts were dug up. It since has been restored and sometimes open to the public (even though it’s a private residence). Long after I moved away, a very old couple passed away and when their house was searched it was discovered that the attic was filled with spy stuff from WW2 — the man was a German spy who worked for the railroad and was passing info to the Germans. This was very interesting. I learned that my grammar school, the Charles J. Capen school was named for one of the first school superintendents in Massachusetts, not that it matters. Dedham was also where Munson and Goss started collecting soil to fill in the Back Bay and create a new Boston during the 1850s.One of the best things I learned about Dedham after leaving was that it is the home for the Dedham Society for Apprehending Horse Thieves, one of the oldest social organizations in America. Since learning about this, I have become a Marshall in the organization and at the annual meeting, the President reports that for another year, no horses have been stolen from Dedham, and giving credit for this to the Organization. Of course, no horses have been stabled in Dedham for many years. Many famous people are or have been members of this organization, such as Ronald Reagan and Michel Gorbachev.The Society in Dedham for Apprehending Horse ThievesThere are many famous and historical things around Massachusetts and Dedham barely rates a mention other than containing the oldest house in America. I didn’t know this til later, but old-time actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr. owned the house and even lived there for awhile. In the 1930s the house became a privately owned museum and was in a long-running dispute for the title of “oldest house in America” with another house in, I think, Florida — but information came about in the 1990s giving the Fairbanks House the crown. It requires constant attention to remain upright.

The question really is, “What do you get for the person who has everything and needs nothing?” You have to give them something that transcends material value because whatever you get them at 30 dollars is just going to end up forgotten in a drawer. So you could get them nice flowers, though that is transitory. But it shows that you are thinking about them and care. You could get them a nice photo of you both together from the past, framed, so they could see it always and recall your friendship. You could get them a small keychain Swiss army knife that they would always have with them as a reminder of your friendship. You could conceivably get them a nice xenon flashlight for their car, though those are about 60 dollars or more. It’s utilitarian and something that will always be at hand and actually used. If possible, get them a gift certificate to a restaurant where you two can celebrate in private, at your expense. You could make them a calendar using photo blow-ups of your times together or things they like. There are many websites that do this and he would think of you for an entire year. Get them a membership to a museum or something like that, that they might actually use and like and think of you when they attend. I suggest a membership in the “Society for Preventing Horse Thieves In Dedham”. It’s the oldest social organization in the United States and you get a really nice certificate, suitable for framing, when you join, a great conversation piece. And you get the rights to attend their rollicking once-a-year dinner at Christmas where they discuss their success of preventing horse thievery in the town of Dedham (which has no horses). You can even get a real police badge and wallet showing you are a Marshall in that organization, or a lapel pin, which will always open up conversation. I have given this as a gift numerous times. My 10th Great-Grandfather, Reverend Thomas Carter, emigrated from his home in Hinderclay, Suffolk, England to the town of Dedham in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635.
