In a word, yes.Every recruiting command has a massive database of every contact ever made by any of their recruiters with any prospects, potential applicants, or contracts, up through them graduating from boot camp. If anything comes up that would automatically disqualify a prospect or an applicant, whether it's medical, educational, legal, or something else, it gets noted in their record, and that record gets reclassified as unfit for the service, and moved to the bottom of the stack.Here's a story. When I was recruiting in Orange County, California I had a father call me one night and ask to set up an appointment for his 19 year old son who wanted to enlist. I asked all the usual screening questions - did he graduate from high school, any medical issues, height /weight, did he have any legal issues or drug problems, etc. The dad said no, so I set up the appointment for the following evening. The kid sounded sincere and genuinely interested in joining, aced the ASVAB practice test, and to my eye was easily within height/ weight standards, so I started scheduling the follow up appointments to get the ball rolling on having him join, and had him fill out the standard information release form so I could pull his high school and college transcripts, and run a routine legal record check at the county courthouse (standard procedure for every applicant wanting to join). He happily signed all the forms, and we agreed to meet up a couple of days later to do the paperwork to take him to the Military Entrance Processing Station. The next morning I ran to the court house, filled out the request for records paperwork, and gave it to the legal clerk I'd come to know there from my time working there, then sat down to wait for what I figured was only going to take maybe five minutes, since the kid and his dad both said his record was clean. Twenty minutes later she hissed my name and motioned me over.“Are you sure this is the right name and birthdate? This is the right so-and-so? ““Yes… why, what did you find?”She gave me a ‘check this shit out’ look and handed me a very thick stack of photocopies, with a summary of charges sheet on top stained yellow from the highlighter she used to mark each individual charge.“Registered sex offender” in bold print on the top of the page was all I needed to see. As soon as I got back to my office I showed my boss, then inserted a detailed note into his file with each and every one of the statutory rape and indecency with a minor charges that was on his record, not to mention the court case was still ongoing, and in bold type at the bottom added “DO NOT CONTACT OR REPLY, UNFIT FOR ANY MILITARY SERVICE.”Then I went next door to the Marine and Army recruiting offices and gave them a heads up, as I was sure he'd be calling them next (I didn't bother calling him or his dad back - they had to know what I had found when I pulled his records, and I was livid that they'd both lied to my face about something so deadly serious and disgusting as that).He did in fact call them both the next week, and when they declined to meet, his dad started calling other Navy recruiting offices in the region, but because they had access to the same database and could see what I'd written in his entry about his terrible criminal record.So in a sense, that piece of shit was very much blackballed. The mythology was similar. We Poles lived nursing the memory of the old glory, and the memory of being beaten to the pulp multiple times recently. Compare with Bar Kokhba revolt and other Jewish uprisings. There was no Poland for 123 years, but it lived in the minds of the Poles. Not as a memory, as a real thing.After the loss of independence, many Poles advocated integration/cooperation with the occupants. Many did. It took a century to become obvious to the most, that only in the independent Poland Poles will have opportunities for a normal life. “Poland” was not a fancy project, it was a pragmatic necessity.Meanwhile, many traditionally Polish lands started to become ethnically mixed.It is funny as well, Polish diaspora emerged worldwide. Usually lowest rungs of the society, crawling their way up in different societies. Even for my generation, born in the semi independent Soviet proxy Poland, it was natural and automatic to seek and receive support from those Polish communities abroad, in case someone Polish found her/himself there. And sure, Polish ghettos with people, second generation, still not that literate in the language of the host country, were to be found in many places.I skip here a lot, but when the Polish military was training and equipping thousands (upwards to 20000, 1937–39, Równe training camp) of emigrants to Palestine, all testimonies I had read was that of a total understanding of the purpose and continuity. Poles did a hard thing, now it was for the Jews to do an even harder one, along the same moral line. That training and shipping to Palestine was a major problem between Polish and British governments, by the way.And in 1943 a part of the Polish Army stationed in Middle East, the units of Jewish Poles, “deserted”. Just that curiously, all those soldiers had been released form the oath shortly before. Nothing official, oh no. It has to be noted that many Jewish Poles remained in the fight against Nazis with that Army, until 1945. The rest - went on to guard Jewish settlements in Palestine.Of course it would be absurd to claim that either Polish or Jewish “state restoration” projects emerged from each other. But they went on in parallel, cooperating and taking mutual inspiration and support.In the Polish case, the eventual independence (1918) was a result of cooperation of otherwise diverge political Polish movements, roughly the nationalists and the socialists, each commanding powerful support. Despite the fact that those political camps disgusted each other, they went hand in hand on the independence route.It is poignant that a similar story played for Israel. The novella describes the groups of Jewish women kept at brothels adjacent to the Concentration Camps used to reward cooperative non-Jewish inmates. Those women were the “Joy Divisions” and while this novella is not without controversy this was very real horror and not just gothic horror expressed in the context of a great song.
