Grab a pen and get ready! Here’s how you CRUSH a book:Use a physical book - It’s cool if you have a tablet or something, but a physical book is the easiest thing to focus on. Having it in your hands, interacting with the pages, dog-earing pages, taking notes, all in my opinion make physical books better than kindles or tablets.Have a notebook ready - Have a notebook handy to copy down thoughts and notes related to the book you’re smashing. Notes on additional research, things to read, quotes you like, have it handy.Grab a pen! - Now things are getting HOT! Get the pen, get ready, because you’re about to underline stuff, write things in the margin, take notes, and use your pen as your eye focus (you’ll discover in a moment).Start by reading table of contents and summary - Read the book jacket, read the summary, check out the table of contents. See the territory you’ll be encountering and what things you’ll run into. Notice where you’re most interested and where you think is worth skipping. Many books have sections that simply aren’t worth reading (referring to nonfiction).START READING! - But not just any reading, speed reading! Use your pen as a pointer to focus your eyes and work yourself across the page in different ways to digest what you’re reading, but DO NOT aim for 100% comprehension. Instead, aim to “get the gist” of what you’re reading.Stop and reread when you hit a gem - When you hit something that is really chewy, that you notice lines up with why you’re reading the book take a moment and note it.Argue with it in the margins, or make notes of your thoughts relevant to the page.Underline the sentences that are most relevant.Dog-ear pages that you want to reference later and continue to digest.Take notes in your notebook about particularly good takeaways - Write your thoughts about how what you’re reading lines up with your current thoughts. Is it insightful? Is it disconfirming? Is it thought-provoking? All of these things are worth noting and why.KEEP READING but take breaks - Set an alarm to go off every 20–25 minutes and take a five minute break. Take a minute to use the bathroom, grab some tea, eat a cookie, whatever, and then get back to the book.That’s it. A question for alphabet users. What do these two words say?Imagine that you work for an import-export firm and see a faxed order form (yes, faxes are still around) for 100 “easers”. You scratch your head and wonder why somebody would place an order for only 100 erasers.Easer (looks like “eraser” misspelled) and Easter, right? Actually, the first word is taser written Chinese-style (horizontal stroke of the t comes first, is blended with the vertical stroke and rounded to join up with the 2nd letter, a.[泰瑟 tàisè / tayseh “taser”, a supposedly nonlethal electroshock weapon: Taser - Wikipedia; image is Public Domain from the US military: Photos]The second word is also written Chinese-style: easier. Many Chinese people write the “dot” on top of the i first, but they turn it into a horizontal line (Chinese writing habit), which leads to very odd results in English.Many Taiwanese people have great difficulty reading alphabetic cursive handwriting (rarely taught in Taiwan’s schools: the situation may be different in China). Some people invent their own Chinese-style cursive by linking letters in odd ways. I’ve also seen examples of printed text with very odd misspellings which I eventually figured out by noticing switched letters: t←→e and i←→TStroke order is minimally important for writing in English. Most people can figure out mistakes like the ones above from context, but when it comes to Chinese, the importance of correct stroke order is orders of magnitude more important. Miswritten characters become unreadable/unguessableNot only does incorrect stroke order affect the legibility of cursive Chinese, it is also important when using character indexes, which arrange characters according to stroke order.[HSPDZ system for arranging stroke order indexes]Below is a stroke order Table of Contents (apologies for the poor image quality) used in a dictionary of ancient Chinese. Vetting of selected highly upvoted answers, especially anonymous ones. If Reddit can do it for AMAs, so can Quora.Organized answer sections, not just one big list. Questions with 100+ answers are unbrowseable. There could be answer grouping (clustering) for answers that basically say the same thing, with the best one selected as visible and the rest folded underneath. We also need answer navigation, via a table of contents for when there are many answers. This could be mostly automated with NLP and would do better than the seldom used answer wiki feature. A “merge answers into group” feature would work too. Divisive questions could be enhanced with stance/sentiment analysis. So, to navigate the question, “Was the president’s speech good?” you could select answers that say “yes,” or “no”…Overall idea is to get away from the “one big list” which works fine for low answer counts, into something navigable that allows for manual discovery of content. A Wikipedia article instead of just a dump of opinions. Otherwise, everything past the 20th (by Quora’s sorting) answer rarely gets read unless it’s popped into your feed.This problem will get worse as Quora’s popularity increases.
