As someone who’s lived either in Winnipeg or very close to it for 44 of the past 46 years, I hope I can share what exactly winter is like.It is long. And it can be cold.In Manitoba, we typically have a five month winter. Some years, it can be short, with a surprisingly mild November, and an early warm ups in March. However, they typical year sees temperatures falling and snow coming in mid-November, with spring not getting any real traction until mid-April.Sure, occasionally on Halloween there is lots of snow on the ground, and sometimes we get huge blizzards at end of April. However, these are more outliers than regular occurrences.Being in the middle of the continent also means the main consistency in our weather is inconsistency. If warm, moist air blows in from Alberta or up from the Gulf, then temperatures rise, and we get mild (and usually) snowy and windy days. If a strong arctic high comes down from up north, we get very cold temperatures, with beautiful, clear, sunny skies.I think when most people describe a Manitoba winter, these are the days they think of. These are the days with a high of -25C, where you bundle up warm before you go play street hockey for 2 hours, then you come inside when it gets dark (at 4:30 PM) and enjoy a great cup of hot chocolate. These are the days where the snow squeaks below your boots, where every smell is magnified in the scentless air of winter, where you swear you can feel something coming from the bright sun…it just isn’t warmth.You learn about windchill, and understand that when the air is -25C (or -30C, or -35C), exposed skin can freeze in less than a minute. And you know this, because even in the coldest and most stable of arctic high pressure air masses, there is always some sort of wind waiting to snatch your body’s heat away. You also learn about block heaters, and their necessity when the temperature goes below -15C, and you want a chance that your car will actually start before work the next day. And you would never think of heading out of the house on any day without first checking the traffic, the road conditions, and the forecast.That is not to say everything is about the temperature. We go outside. We skate, we snowmobile, we cross-country ski (very few places to downhill ski in very flat Manitoba), we go tobogganing. As kids, we’d play street hockey, throw snowballs, and stay outside as long as we could, despite our numb fingers and toes. We learn at a young age to embrace the weather, not fight it. “Bundle up” and “Dress to the Conditions” are regular phrases.People also find lots of things to do indoors. Winnipeg has a fantastic culinary scene, something I attribute in many ways to being forced inside to eat for so many months of the year.And once I had ice forming on my beer at a Winnipeg Blue Bomber playoff game within seconds of taking a sip (West Semi-Final, Nov 2, 2003, -16C, close to -30C with the windchill).For people who have grown up here, winter is a regular way of life. For those who move from here to warmer cities like Vancouver, many are actually surprised at how they miss winter here. After 2 straight weeks of damp rain, a nice sunny “dry cold” -20C day seems pretty good.There is also something about coming in from the dark on a bitterly cold day into a warm, lit home, with the smells of cooking and possibly a wood fire. Escaping from the murderous clutches of nature touches something very elemental in people. There are only so many places in North America where the weather can regularly kill you. This is one of them.That being said, we get surprisingly nice days. On Christmas a few years ago, we had +7C temperatures and the snow was melting. The last two years we’ve been very light on snow. Last year, winter was mild all the way until January, with many lakes still having open water. And some years, you can get the golf clubs out in March or April (although the greens are actually “browns”).Winnipeg is also designed around the weather, with an extensive skywalk system downtown. There are many heated parking garages, and numerous enclosed malls to shop in. Many bus shacks are heated, and numerous cottage industries have developed just to give folks something to do when it’s cold out.And best of all, at the end of Winter, we get Winnipeg’s most glorious season, Spring.If the person asking the question was thinking of moving here, I should note that I have known people who have settled here and been happy from many more temperate parts of the world (Nigeria, Guyana, the Philippines, India).Hope this answers your question, but please, come for a visit. Bishop and Beadon’ Waterfalls located at Mawprem,13 . Iewduh- Main Market Place of Shillong located at a point near Mawkhar,14. Maittilang Park located at Upper Shillong,15. Elephant Waterfalls, adjacent to Maittilang park,16. Mawphlang Sacred Grooves located at Mawphlang,17 . Heritage Khasi Village adjacent to Mawphlang Sacred Grooves,18. Sweet Waterfalls located at Mawshubuit,20 Butterfly Museum located at Riatsamthiah(Second thing to do) Seek information/history behind the mentioned tourist spots from the internet before your actual visit so that your visit becomes meaningful.Also spare at least 3 days for visits to the nearby places of Shillong.( This is the third thing to do).A visit to Cherrapunjee(about 65 Km from Shillong will be a memorable one as you will really witness the Scenic beauty of Meghalaya. On the way to Cherrapunjee, you will first enjoy the beauty of the Mawkdok Canyon, then on reaching Cherrapunjee, you will see a series of beautiful waterfalls. One of them is the Nohkalikai waterfall which is one of the top-ten beautiful waterfall in Asia. In a Mawsmai village,near Cherrapunjee, you will see the Natural Cave, the longest cave in Meghalaya.Next, you can visit Nongriat Double decker living root Bridge. This will be a the most challenging journey you will remember for life. A part of this journey is trekking where you will have to climb down about 3000 steps to the destination and climbing up the same steps on your return journey. You will feel the pain due to the strain of your muscles and this will make you remember throughout your life. After your body has recovered from your muscular pain, you can visit Mawlynnong, the Cleanest village in Asia. Also visit the living root bridge at a place adjacent to Mawlynnong.Lastly, make your visit to Mawsynram, the rainiest place on earth. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Mawsynram received the highest amount of rainfall, with 26,000 mm of annual rainfall beating the record held by Cherrapunjee. While in Mawsynram, visit the Mawjymbuin cave. Finally, visit the Hot spring at Jakrem, near Mawsynram. You can take bath on the hot spring as it is believed to have some medicinal effect. There are separate provisions of bathing for both males and females.
