I think most of them are daft and not much different from regular conservatives. They act as though the oppose all forms of heirarchical authority and they heavily criticise the state yet they ardently defend the system of huge private corporations which dominate this world and our lives - and they don’t question how a few private companies dominating vital services such as healthcare could be, in itself, an even greater monster than the state owning vital services.Most that I have debated with also just seem like crypto-Libertarians. Conservatives who like free market capitalism, legalised weed and gay marriage. They really just uphold the system as we know it though and very few are actually interested in breaking down the state or heirarchical forms of dominance over other human beings. They’re more likely to sympathise with large companies and big business.They don’t want no state/small state, they just want the McState™.There’s very few Libertarians who actually stuck to their guns and didn’t just act like being a Libertarian was only about opposing the state. I think these are the most stimulating to talk to because they’re honest about opposing all forms of heirarchical dominance (even though I disagree and believe that all wage labour negates freedom). They still sympathise with the private enterprise however they have a more realistic take on it than the crypto-Libertarians.In the end of the day I think that far too many ‘Libertarians’ are still just bootlickers - though instead of licking the boots of the state they are licking the $1000 brogues of CEOs and big business.

Pretty much the same thing I’m doing, just at a huge expensive party school without much reputation beyond its Frat life and sports teams.Every school has roughly the same valedictorian. Extroverted, motivated, bubbly STUCO/theater/band/math team/ whatever kid who’s got a hand in every pot and spends all their time up at school and who’s parents are insanely involved.I dated his sister and saw first hand. We were in the same classes and he’d be studying when I came over, even on weekends. I always wanted to know what, because I could literally never think of anything to study for.He studied a year in advance for the ACT. I couldn’t imagine, that much time you’d literally know every question ever asked and be able to write a damn formula for what will be asked later. The product was one or two more points more than what I got.I just couldn’t fathom it.All the work was for one goal, to show up on graduation day and brag about what big school they got into. Where I’m from, where quite literally no one has ever gone to any Ivy League school (except one Princeton grad, made the news all around) it was such a stupid, pointless game. He hadn’t got the memo that you could max out every opportunity available to us and still theyd be able to fill a fucking stadium with kids of equivalent resumes. You’re working this hard when the only smart thing, to avoid crippling debt and a big old kick in the “your not special” ass, was to just go to a good state school or even JuCo for a few years. Maybe you can transfer if you’re the super genius you think.But he did get into an impressive school. One of the most expensive public schools in the country but didn’t make it through more than a semester. Ended up coming back home and going to the big McState school to study engineering. The program is no joke, but not exceptionally regarded.We have the same major. I’d wager we’ll be graduating at the same time, and I’ll have a second degree as well.It just makes me bitter because I feel bad. I didn’t try an eighth as hard, and sure I probably had a ruder awakening gathering the discipline once I made it to college, but I had a lot more fun and actually developed my intellectual curiosity in my own way. It’s the perfect example of the idiocy of public schooling for gifted individuals, it’s marked because we were intellectual equals and he got a worse education by being so serious.My advice for smart high schoolers at shitty schools: blow it the fuck off because you can learn 100x more on your own than the teachers can give you. Just be ready to get your game together at the next level. Valedictorian doesn’t mean a damn thing unless you’re at some anointed competitive school.
