Are the missing bolts on the hastily assembled production line for the Tesla Model 3 a cause for concern?

What a fucking joke. I’m going to guess that particular twit has never been in a manufacturing facility, has no technical training whatsoever, and has never read a single page of industrial safety guidelines. I see another answer found the comments further down to lack class, but I confess that I could not do anything but close the page as quickly as possible to avoid further contaminating my computer. Sorry if this seems an extreme reaction, but I’m allergic to stupidity, especially when it masquerades as an informed critic based on their ability to ignore common sense.Deep breath.Credibility claims: I’m an engineer for one of the two largest tier one suppliers in the world (we trade places with Bosch) who is responsible for specifying, ordering, installing, and validating mass production lines. I don’t build lines like the one shown, but they’re fundamentally similar. There may not be a single person on Quora with a more direct professional connection to the topic at hand.Zero floor bolts were required to assure safety on those conveyors. The bolts are there to guarantee alignment, and two per conveyor are adequate to do that. Three is reasonable overkill. They appear to have doubled or tripled that requirement by putting a bolt onto every leg of every conveyor. But they’re not load bearing at all, nor are they subject to fatigue. The biggest load those will ever see is a hip check from a 350 lb American. And the bolts are huge. In certain applications there might be a tip risk, but these are low enough that there’s no problem.“oh, but the legs have extra holes!” That’s because in certain implementations you can’t put a bolt on one side of the conveyor. I just wish I had a good example to demonstrate… Oh, wait!(if you didn’t open the link: that’s the “incriminating” image in question) Notice there’s a walkway between these two conveyors? And notice how two of the bolt holes he circled are directly in said walkway? Our safety genius thinks we need an M10 stud sticking out of the ground where people constantly put their feet. Those of us with actual experience with industrial safety know that’s a blatant and totally unnecessary trip hazard. Not that it is likely to cause an incident, but it’s FAR more likely than a conveyor breaking loose from said studs.Another answer by a writer I enjoy, follow and respect says this demonstrates lack of attention to detail, which is a reasonable lay opinion. I disagree because of the aforementioned lack of load bearing. It’s just not important. Plus, it’s manufacturing - not a shippable product - so the standards are quite different than most people are familiar with.But the bolt pattern actually shows that Tesla put a LOT more thought into this than first glance indicates. Because when you look at the larger picture posted by Musk you can conclusively see five other leg sets with the bolt pattern is on opposing corners. This is exactly how an engineer would plan it if they thought it made a flying fuck of difference.Which tells us that somebody at Tesla indeed took the time to specify the bolt pattern on each set of conveyor legs, with a special requirement for egress paths. It further tells us that this guideline was followed by the type of technician you assign to drill into a concrete floor. All during a project implemented in 3 weeks. That’s frankly unbelievable to me, to the point that I doubt Musk’s time figure.There are a few minor abnormalities that present no issue for safety or function. I can’t tell if the leg on the far right has a bolt in the right rear position. Idiot circled it, but there’s clearly something metallic in that area when you zoom in which could be a bolt, and we can’t see if they might have added a bolt on the other side to compensate for a damaged hole. And once again, if it has no bolt it doesn’t matter anyway. There’s an abnormally long stud that may have been drilled at an angle on the top left corner of his image as well, but it clearly has a nut, so I don’t see any issue beyond minor sloppiness. In my professional opinion, a company focused on the right things would not correct either of these issues because the resources required would detract from the core mission.What you should worry about is a company that thinks they have to screw every hole in the plant. Innuendo intended. THAT’s evidence of a rigid bureaucratic culture that focuses on appearances rather than the actual requirements. It’s a company that will miss major, very important details because they weren’t on the standard forms. Which would be particularly problematic with a young company making a complex product. Such as, you know, Tesla making a car. Because I can assure you they won’t know every issue that can cause an issue at this point.Companies have limited resources, and the more energy you spend on a conveyor floor bolt pattern the less you have to address the real issues. Process capability. Process margin. Actual safety risks. Past quality event prevention. Standard work procedures. These requirements are extensive, complex and require a great deal of effort. And they are a very real risk to the customer. Unlike floor bolts.I can’t believe I just analyzed conveyor bolt placement for a thousand words. It’s hard to explain how trivial this is in the bigger picture of automotive manufacturing. Imagine your favorite writer used double spaces after a period in one of their articles and there are people who’ve never been to English class who claim this is a fireable offense, or requires a government inspection. That’s the level of stupidity this is. It’s a matter of opinion. It doesn’t matter. But one dumbass with a twitter circles a few useless holes in sheet metal and people think they know more than the engineers building lines.If I wanted to help I might point out that whatever tote system delivers parts on that conveyor could just slide off the edge due to the total lack of edge guarding. Not that it’s that crazy, but at least I could offer “yeah, that should probably be guarded…”
