Often this occurred when the adults were powerless to protect them. The little kids usually died because of their lack of fighting and survival skills, while the teens usually died because of a lack of judgment. In some cases, it was just bad luck. The comics have been even more unforgiving, with a tween-aged Carl killing one toddler after he killed his own twin brother, and baby Judith being crushed under the dead weight of Lori (shot down by the Governor). Somehow, Sophia has remained alive in the comics all this time, but numerous youths have died ugly deaths.In an apocalypse, many children would not survive. People might begin to view them as a non-asset, and refuse to share food or provide protection to them. Some individuals might even view children as sacrificial lambs in a tight spot. And of course, never forget how many people seem to have an interest in sexual intercourse with children. Some of these fine folk would undoubtedly survive the initial catastrophe.
