'Because there is exactly one way to do nothing.'Not my words exactly. A friend said this when I asked him the same question. But a perfect explanation nevertheless!

Realistically no. A lot of us want to change that reality though.India has many fundamental problems that prevent it from becoming a factory of the world:Cultural bias: There is a cultural bias against industries and industrialists. For instance, if someone compares you to Adani, they are not praising you but likely insulting you. India was ruled by a corporation at the heights of the industrial revolution. Many Indians are unable to get out of that trauma and don’t look at industries in a positive way. The respect accorded to farmers and knowledge workers are far more than factory owners and their workers. Thus, India jumped from agriculture to services due to a fundamental cultural bias. Most Indians think farm work is somehow holy and office work is holy, but factory work as dirty.Engineering education: The standard of engineering education is substantially poorer than the big 4 industrialized nations - Germany, Japan, China and USA. If we don’t want to do cheap factory work [for which there are many countries] the quality of engineering/factory labor has to dramatically improve.Environmental protection: In India, it is ok for anyone other than the factories to pollute the earth. However, if a major corporation impacts the environment, all hell breaks loose. While I’m all for environment, what riles me is this double standard. While little is done to stop the environmental abuse of the farmers [who deplete the water tables with free electric motors and drain off excess fertilizers in water systems], there is obstacle every way for a major factory. China had much laxer standards [not a good thing] that helped it become a major industrialized nation. In India, the standards are harder for factories. Project in Odisha is over, says PoscoLand laws: India has land laws that make it extremely hard to acquire large parcels of land for building factories. Indian middle class has bought into the myth that India is running out of farming land and prevents moves of the factories from acquiring fertile lands [in India any place with water is fertile and there is no easy way to build factories in non-fertile deserts]. Far less than 1% of Indian farming land has moved to factories in the last 20 years and even that has created a lot of furore among the middle class. You cannot become the factory of the world, if you cannot easily get large units of land.Infrastructure: India produces far less electricity than is needed to be a China. That is true of most other types of infrastructure [roads, ports, warehouses]. Look at how much China invests in infrastructure [as % of GDP] and compare it with India. China has been stepping up the game and India not as much.Indian middle class has to fundamentally give up its bias against factories, factory owners and factory work. They have to think beyond the agricultural mindset and realize that every rich country pulled people out of poverty through factory work. You cannot wipe poverty without factories. You cannot employ every Indian in Google and Facebook, neither can you get a farmer rich with their current 1 acre of land. The laws are primarily written to favor small cottage industries over factories and farmers over factories.Since Indian middle class has an outsized impact over the nation’s policy making, their bias is a major impediment for India from becoming a major industrial power. Indian middle class are not used to changing their attitudes quickly and thus India will see its opportunities stolen by other countries. Bangladesh has for instance lapped the garment industry that was moving out of China [Bangladesh textile industry sets export record] while Indians smugly look at their factories.

Beekeepers in Alsace, France produce 100 metric tons of honey that is shipped throughout the world.In 2012, they began noticing discolored honey throughout in their hives:For no apparent reason, all of their honey had turned blue and purple. They began following the bees’ flight paths. It led them along a 4 KM trail, leading all the way to an M&M factory.The bees had been feeding on the discarded containers of M&Ms, leading to the bizarre shade of honey. This wasn't actually a good thing as they couldn't sell the discolored honey.They contacted the factory and in due turn the factory cleaned up its disposal process and the bees returned to their regular diet.
