How do I get off the waitlist at a prestigious university?

There is a lot you can do to improve your chances of going from waitlist to accepted. The length of a wait list and the speed at which it shrinks varies from year-to-year and from school-to-school. What remains constant? Your role in the process. Here is a 5-step action plan to getting off a college waitlist:Take a deep breath. You weren’t rejected! After reading your application, admissions officers didn’t outright reject you. Admissions officers receive thousands of applications from qualified candidates, and are tasked with making incredibly hard choices. There was something about your application that intrigued them and that showed you could be a good fit for their program. Remember: there is still hope!Accept your spot on the college waitlist (literally, not figuratively). In today’s college admissions landscape, it is not assumed that all students accept their spot on their college waitlist. Make sure to READ. EVERY. EMAIL. Click every link, and actually press “accept” if offered a spot on the waitlist.Write a letter of continued interest, and then send it. This is your opportunity to tell your dream school that it is still your number one choice. This letter should be to-the-point and professional (no need to write more than a page; in fact, don’t). While admissions officers at different schools have different preferences for how they’d like students to handle the waitlist process, there are a couple of standards that apply across the board. In this letter you need to:Express a strong desire to go to the school for specific, relevant reasons. If it’s your number one choice, then say it -- clearly and persuasively.Provide relevant, new information. Have you received any new awards? Do you have new scores to report? Has your startup doubled in size? Did your team win the state championship? Tell the admissions office about anything positive and new you have done since you applied. It can be hard to improve your candidacy between application deadlines and decision notifications, but think creatively. For a full list of questions to ask yourself, look at this article on Deferred From College: What Happens Next?Consider an additional letter of recommendation. Keyword consider. Only do this if you have a strong and close relationship with an influential person -- a professor at the school, powerful alumni, or highly elected official. If all else fails…You need to have a plan in place if all else fails. For most people, this will come in the form of a “fit” or “safety” school. But if you are still DEAD SET on going to the school that waitlisted you, you have a couple of backup to the backup options.Take a gap yearTransferIf you didn’t get the result you wanted, try not to get absorbed in the craziness around you. Think clearly, act strategically, and don’t give up! For more information read: Waitlisted? 5-Step Action Plan for Getting off the College Waitlist.

What has been your best career decision(s)?

26.12.2008I Post-graduated in MBA from a tier II college without a job while my friends ended up with lucrative jobs.To feed myself, I joined a sales job for Rs.8K and kept searching for a better opportunity. That was recession time when most of the companies were cutting down the HR costs.Going through Internet,I found a notification for recruitment of clerk in State bank. Unfortunately that day was the last day for payment of registration and payment of fee.Hence, I Dowloaded the form and filled it.Checked my pocket which had Rs.300. The fee was Rs.250/-. I would be left with no money if i pay the fee and had to survive 7 more days until the salary day.Lot of thoughts went through my mind.”Whether to pay the fee or not? What am I doing here? An MBA applying for clerical post!! How my career is deteriorating day by day!The time I reached the bank, there is a long queue to pay the Fee challan which I found as an excuse to abort. Went out and started my bike. But something was itching inside. Again joined the queue. When my turn was about to come,I left the queue and again joined at the end. After huge confusion paid the fee.Recharged my phone with the remaining amount in a small shop where I forgot to collect my phone. I went back to collect my phone in next 5 mins, but by that time it was stolen. Now I am penny less, mobile less , no fuel in my bike and with a burning tummy starving for food.I went back to my office where my manager was having his lunch. For formalities sake, he asked me to join him. I do wanted to join him but my self-respect pulled me back.Returned to my room with using all the fuel saving techniques. As I expected, ran out of fuel with still 5 Kms to go. Kicked my bike (my best friend who is with me all the time). Sat on roadside, hot sun over my head, punishing myself for going with the stupid decision to pay the recruitment fee. Walked 2 kms and when couldn't walk more, begged rides to reach my room (Thinking... Another mile stone achieved ...an elevation to a begger)Borrowed money from friends and collected my bike..01.03.2009:Given the exam without much preparation.14.10.2009:Joined State Bank of Hyderabad as an Assistant with a starting salary of Rs.8K.Fast forward 7 years..Now, I am Deputy Manager at SBH with monthly salary of 50K and additional perks of around 30K per month. The investment of Rs.250/- I made that day has multiplied now by N no.of times. This is the best decision I made in my career.Life is all abouts ups and downs. Even a straight line in the ECG say that you are dead. So never be demotivated.Never compare with others. It is not all about money. Ultimate goal of life is to experience it to the fullest. My friend compares himself to me and thinks that I lead a great life. But what I feel is contrast. I feel my friend has best life, in my home town with his mother and busy in his agricultural farms without any tension.Accept what you get. If you are unable to get your dream job, first accept the one that is searching for you. Then go for the dreamed one.Edit:Many commented that the story is inspiring. Actually this is story of 200 officers of my batch. Due to huge retirements we got fastrak promotions. After my MBA, I thought like many here, a dream job should be in big corporate, tours and weekend parties and never tried a Govt job which I felt like boring and low paid.Once I went to SBI. The clerk who I know was not on his seat. I enquired and found that he cleared Civil services exam and is now a IPS. This changed my attitude on bank jobs. Later I found that Middle, low income civil service aspirants opt for a bank job and prepare for UPSC.State bank attracts the 2nd best talent in the job market among public sector. The monthly pay for a Probationary officer will be around 70K. This includes Fuel, leased accomdation, entertainment allowance etc. Apart from this there are Annual, bi Annual allowance like furniture, LFC, Home travel, leave encashment. Some concessional loans too, like home and car loans. Apart from this the respect we gain from a farmer who is served with a crop loan. Many people find it difficult to crack a PO exam. Even I never cleared a PO interview. Missed marginally and being from general category this makes a huge difference. Now SBI is merging it's associate banks and may close few branches. This may lead to surplus staff and effect the recruitment. But IBPS conducts exam for PO and clerks in other banks. Now the recruitment for clerks is under process.Below is the link. 12th sept is the last day for application. Don't be in a confusion like me..Welcome to IBPS ::The eligibility for a clerk is graduation and basic 10th class mathematics and computer knowledge is enough to clear the exam. All you need is speed and accuracy which can be attained from practice and practice. Don't think of giving a clerk job. Because of retirements every year, a clerk can be an officer in 3-4 years. Now all the banks are in consolidation mode and there can be a cut down in the vacancies. This is the best time to give a bank exam.Even my friend (now my wife) is Btech graduate from a reputed college with a campus placement in Satyam computers. Due to the scam, she was not called and later joined as clerk in Grameen bank. Actually this scam helped my wife as an excuse for averting pressure for her marriage and given time for me to settle. Now she is Asst Manager in Indian overseas bank. She has not opted for promotion for some reasons.
