Before I get crucified for answering this question, let me say that I have paid every cent of child support I have ever owed, and a lot more beyond that.There are two main reasons I don’t want to pay child support. The first is that calculation of child support doesn’t work for high wage earners. The formula works fairly well for people with average salaries. For a physician, who earns well over what most people earn, child support ends up being way higher than it actually needs to be to support the child.The second, and more important reason, is that I know that the money is not going to actually support my child. It’s providing a source of income for my ex. I don’t want to go into details here, but suffice it to say that child support should not allow a single mother to be a stay at home mom and drive a BMW. Yes, providing for shelter and transportation for the mother also benefits the child. But, the mother should also be expected to contribute something for her own shelter and transportation, instead of living off the child.Honestly, I would be happy to pay for everything my child needed. I already do that for the half the time he is with me. If I could pay for a portion of her rent, her car expense, and 100% of everything that my kid needed at her house, I would be happy to do that. It’s the fact that another person is leeching off my hard earned money that scathes me.
