The other fundamental thing is balancing equations and being able to convert this to tonnes in and out - I hope you can see the need for this.However, the main part of designing a chemical process comes from the physical situation - forces, fluids moving around, energy being transformed - in order to arrange the situation for the chemical reactions to take place and to carry out the separation processes (e.g. distillation, crystallization, filtration). Thus it is important to understand these parts of physics - gas laws, mechanics, heat. (Relativity and quantum mechanics rarely come into it.)In my personal view, the maths a chemical engineer needs to practice is not really hard, but it is important to get it right. You do not get 5/10 for designing something by the correct method and having the decimal point wrong. However, university courses tend to go a bit further, so you should be prepared for this, particularly at the most prestigious institutions.Most chemical engineering graduates go on to industrial positions and will have early responsibility for management. In other words, they will be doing things and making things happen. This is different from going on to do a PhD and being a research scientist - a minority sport for chemical engineers, but a possible route for those so inclined to become academics.An alternative degree for those who like chemistry and physics is materials science or materials engineering. These are usually less demanding in mathematics.
