Why do graduate engineering trainees get fed up of L&T? Despite being one of the world's most reputed companies, why are GETs running away from this company?
Hi everyone,I am a GET, 2015 batch, and I have been working in L&T construction B&F IC for over two months now. In this short period of time half the GETs who I know of have already left L&T and the remaining are waiting for their bond period to be over; Including me, the only thing that is holding me back is the bond money (I don’t have enough money to pay the bond amount neither I want to “abscond”) and also that I don't know what am I going to do after leaving (I’ll go for GATE or IES I guess, but I don't have enough money yet).Despite a lucrative pay raise for GETs this year, the reasons everyone including me is far beyond committing their future to the company are simple.There are many great answers in this feed, I felt like I don't need to be writing at first, but again just for another perspective, here are my few points.1. Working hours- Sure, in today's competitive corporate world none can expect a 9 to 5 shift but still L&T somehow manages to push you over the edge. A 12 hours shift that lasts for 13-15 hours, everyday of the week is a little too much, don't you think? And yes, they call us on Sundays too for a half day shift.It’s not just the GETs but everyone at the site has to work that much, be it O1, O2. So it’s not like I only have to do it for a year or two then it'll become better. Nope, imagine working like that for the rest of your lives. There is no light at the end of the tunnel.2. Bad Coordination between HR and Site: - For the last few years company has this job rotation policy. GETs have to be in every department like planning, execution, quality, P&M, safety etc. for one month or one and half month depending upon his core before starting their core functions. but guess what, from the first day on I was sent to execution, which BTW is deemed roughest among the core functions, because you have to be standing at site all day long in the burning sun. My core was Execution so I can understand. But, one of the GETs at my site whose core was planning is also working in execution with no job rotation whatsoever. So basically, managers (Project, Construction, etc.) at L&T sites are the people who believe that 9 women can give birth to a child in one month. That’s their unit of productivity, how many hours you are standing at site.Another example: Leave structure for the GETs includes 23 days of privileged leave at the end of training period of 11 months. But from what I came to know from the previous year GETs is that the leave that they actually got was a 7-10 days leave, again the reason is the same they want you to be on site for as many days as possible.3. Work: - This is the worst part. L&T the best place for training my ass; well, the work comprises of managing workmen, filling out pour card and checklists, and chasing people from departments like survey, plumbing, electrical, safety and client to get their signatures. There is nothing you get to learn, unless you go out of your way to ask people from other department and other senior people which you won’t get the time for. There are few upsides of working on sites though, you legs won’t hurt anymore after a day full of standing and walking (in the shoes that weigh 2.5 kg each), and daily you get to wear fresh pair of outfit, because by the time your job for the day is finished the dress you are wearing has dirt and sweat all over it.I often heard people saying that in L&T you get the freedom to do the work the way you want. Let me tell you something; that is only true as long as you are doing it the way your seniors think is the right way. I’ve been yelled at by both clients and my own seniors by missing the deadlines by 1-2 days and making petty mistakes that anyone in my position would have made.4. Peer group: - The people you spend your day with are a bunch of workmen from Bihar and Jharkhand and other diploma holder site colleagues, those people do the same work as you do. There is no difference between anyone at site. There are a few ITI people also who have worked their way up by experience. I have nothing against them; they know a hell lot than I do about construction. The problem is they have spent their fresh day’s way back when the times were different and they still miss those days and don’t like the changes in methods or machinery. Here I was going to compare myself with my friends from my other departments in my college, but that’s stupid.I used to be a top of my class NITian, and now when I look at myself sometimes and think “what am I doing?”, “Is this the reward I am getting for all the trouble I have taken studying for all those years?” I don’t know the answer but it hurts. Not getting time for entertainment or social life is one thing but constantly being undervalued and underutilised and getting yelled at is well, this is L&T.P.S. - going anonymous, will remove anonymity once I leave the company. :)P.P.S- I have left the company, and now i am happily pursuing my mba.
