PDF Editor FAQ

How does the VISA and Mastercard's token system work?

I can write a long writeup for this but I will try to give you a simple answer eliminating details but highlighting the concept. There are two process in this Token Ecosystem: Setup and UsageSetup:User Requests his credit card to be tokenized. (This is usually in form of enrolling into a digital wallet like ApplePay, MasterPass, VisaCheckout, Softcard(formerly ISIS), etc. )Digital Wallet taking help of networks(MasterCard, Visa, Amex etc) validates the Credit Card with Issuer (Financial Institution which has issued that card). This is an optional step and varies between various implementation but most of new ones are doing this. After successful validation, networks(MasterCard, Visa, Amex etc) create the Token and a copy is stored in Digital Wallet, Network and Issuer.Note that actual Credit Card number might not be stored in Digital Wallet so its safe with Issuer and Network.Usage:User goes to a Merchant, selects what needs to be purchase and proceed to checkout and selects the Digital Wallet he has enrolled as mode of payment.Digital Wallet sends Token to the Merchant and Merchant sends same Token to Networks for Authorization. Network who holds the mapping between Token and credit card number translates token and send actual credit card number to Issuer.Once Issuer receives the request they can run their usual auth process and authorize the payment. Here Actual Card number is never exposed to merchants which reduces the risk and fraud options. Also in most of cases Token has to be used in conjunction with other entity( one time dynamic code generated by Wallet) so it cannot be used alone.Good thing about the whole process is Merchant and Issuers just needs to integrate with Network and not all issuers/merchants.

What happens when a credit card is approved at the merchant then later declined by the credit card company?

“What happens when a credit card is approved at the merchant then later declined by the credit card company?”This is what “pre-auth” transactions are all about. In principle, when there’s some sort of a “contingency” on a transaction, the merchant puts through a pre-authorization request.Common examples of merchants using pre-auths are fuel purchase, car rentals, hotel stays. These are specifically because the final amount due is not known. Another possibility would be merchandise that is not shipped immediately. This is because the customer should not be charged until it ships. The pre-auth tells the system to “reserve” available credit in the future, but if the corresponding charge doesn’t come through within a certain amount of time (depending on the merchant classification code), the pre-auth is canceled.I am not sure, but there mayt be some other cases when a pre-auth code is canceled, e.g. when card is reported as stolen. So generally speaking, the pre-auth is designed to prevent the charge from later being declined, but if too much time had passed, then this can happen. In this case, the merchant isn’t paid, and it will be up to the merchant to contact the customer and request an alternate form of payment.

How would a computer hacker think differently from a programmer?

How would a computer hacker think differently from a programmer?Anyone that could think reversibly is a hacker, not just only computer hackers thinks differently. If you’ve done something different than normal or standard way of doing it, you just hacked it. Why would anyone think of hitting a television will bring a clear image back whenever the pictures goes out? Yes, in the 80s - 90s we use to hit the TV, slap it and the picture will come back, whoever came with that idea hacked the TV.A real storyI was at a night club when I met a guy who just came to abroad from Africa for the first time, from a country where Visa, MasterCard or any form of Credit Card, Debit Card or ATM was never used, rampant or underdog back in the 90s - early 2000. He asked for some cash and I had to find an ATM outside the club to use, I gave him the cash and as we were returning back to the club he had a conversation with me that went like this:Him: Hmm, this plastic gave you this money?   Me: Yes, why?  Him: How?  Me: The cash were carefully stacked inside the ATM's dispenser, once your bank verify your identity and your request electronically, they return an auth to the ATM which allows the dispenser to give you the authorized amount.  Him: That’s it? I wouldn't need a plastic card to take that money out!  Me: What would you need?  Him: A pickup truck, gallons of ACID, pour acid around the ATM's wall and pull it into truck, now you wouldn't need auth from your bank to get the money. ... I laughed so hard…. I was rolling…. I couldn’t believe he could possibly had a thought like that within some seconds of getting the cash.If this guy was a programmer, he would certainly be looking for a way to break into the ATM and take an advantage. To answer your question in a nutshell, a computer hacker thinks how to make impossibility to be possible and either take the advantage (Black Hat) or provide a fix (Grey/White Hat) .I hope this helps.
