At the family Jewelery store we bought many old and used vintage jewelry pieces and old gold scrap.After my Parents died my evil sibling kept 90% of the jewellery and left only the crap and one of the items was a blackened metal bar weighing 2.5 lbs.The stupid sibling presumed it was silver, but it was pure platinum and the oxide on it was silver plated as it had a proof mark on it. I got $73,000 USD for it! hahahaWell among the estate buying and Insurance company purchases we had several customers who scoured pawn shops and Las Vegas gambling areas and the Horse racing Hollywood park to buy gold and old jewelry.Many of the older cut diamonds were re-cut and made to modern specifications. This cleaned up the color and clarity but reduced the carat weight..And we had an old timer named Whitey. He was very pale in ghost white color and never got out in the sun and was a creepy guy, reminding me of a Horror movie character and his dentures clicked and clacked as he talked and it was unnerving to listen to him ramble on. “Hey Brian clickedy clackedy whats up snapedy clack!Fortunately my Dad did the buying from him and bought by weight and he had old rings and pendants and bracelets and old jewelry that was 60 years old vintage.Sometimes he had teeth with gold in them and we had to send these to our goldsmith to burn the gold out and weigh it as dental gold is very hard and usually 10 Karat gold maximum.Whitey did this for many years and always had a big and new supply of goods of the same old vintage and he said he was friends with many pawn shops and got first pick and then he collected them up to sell to us!We had a Whitey tray of his goods all revamped and polished and restored. The many engraved goods we scrapped.Well my dear childhood friend and neighbor Danny called with the sad news his mother died and I was asked to be a pall bearer at her funeral in the Palos Verdes Cemetery.I was dressed in my black suit and we went to the Mortuary home and were rehearsing the impending event and I went past a big office and saw a man sitting down and it was Whitey and there was his desk placard-Whitey ——- ROSE HILLS MORTUARY DIRECTOR!!Whitey how long have you been working here? “ OH click-About 48 years. clack clack-I started as as embalmer when I click was 18 and now i click clack run the place snap clicky!”The funeral went off well and I had a light bulb go off in my head!And I realized that Whitey had been robbing the coffins/caskets of all these people before being embalmed and burned, he stripped their jewelry and even pulled their gold teeth out. Holy Crap !!!!MY Dad was amazed and not amused and that was the last of his selling to us. But I do kinda miss the dentures clicky clacks as he spoke in a BORIS KARLOFF voice complete with a percussion to it!I told my fiancee that the old gold locket I gave her for Valentines day was probably pocketed from a corpse! click clack!!!!!-Whitey looked a lot like SPIKE JONES!And his Dentures played a clicky clack percussion as he talked too!My Dad was convinced he stole the dentures from a corpse and they were not the right fit and rattled as he should have had a custom set made?Yuck, I hope he washed them before first use!!!FOOTNOTE: I was just a little kid and my Dad was driving me somewhere and I remember i was in the front seat next to him and i pointed to a huge cemetery with all the headstones in rows and flowers and mounds and such. I asked him “what is that place Dad”?That son—”IS A BONEYARD ORCHARD”! For years I thought they grew bones for dogs and critters! haha
