Since I live in California:As a note, my daughter went to UCSB, which is considered to have one of the best science programs in the nation (for her pre-med studies). However, she chose to teach science and math (fancy that, Dave Consiglio :) instead of becoming a doctor (kids) and has progressed on to other degrees (teaching creds, admin creds: CSUN and MS/MBA dual degree from CSCI). So, I am of the opinion that it might be best to determine what subject and age and then go from there as well. She was able to teach Jr. High without credentials while getting her credentials because of her BS and the shortage of math and science teachers. She moved on to HS with her credentials. She recently left a district level job that taught all teachers how to integrate STEM into their other subject matter, and took a client consulting job at state level with a company that creates lab equipment and training programs for the STEM subject matter. She’s a constant learner and I listed this to demonstrate that there are ways to enhance teaching credentials, if you think of a 40 year career plan.Since I live in CA, I have seen some of the areas where each school varies, however most of my contact has been with science related majors. My experience encompasses interactions with many UC medical research programs. Both of my children went to UC, my son to UCSC, which seemed to be great in the fine arts, though at the time, they had a pass/fail system and the students had to be really mature to get the most out of their classes (ROI vs tuitions). Their tuitions are quite high in comparison to a CS or CSU.In asking my daughter this question, her response was that she went to CSUN for her teaching credentials because it was close to home, much less expensive, and had a good teacher’s program. It was also in a community that strove to have high results in their schools. I went to CSUB and feel that it would have been a fine choice for teaching credentials at a reduced cost as well. I was also heavily involved in Bakersfield leadership and was up to my neck in the local projects to enhance educations for kids. I have to say that Kern County is very kid-oriented that way. I think student teacher enrichment opportunities on a community level is something to consider when it comes to working with local leaders, parents, and the school programs. Thus, you might look for a school in an community active in educational enhancement.Thus, the entire question becomes WHAT do you want to teach and to what degree? I think CSUs are great for elementary teachers. Especially in light of the student loan repayment cost versus a teacher’s salary. If you are specializing, I would consider a BA/BS at whichever school has programs in your desired field that is the best you can enter based on selection process and tuition. And then still consider the actual teaching credential at a CS level. unless you want to teach at a college or University level. I am out of my league recommending that. But as a note, the UC system costs 4 or 5 times as much as the CSU system, to my knowledge. That is why considering a mix might be better.
