Is it worth going for PG Diploma program in Data Analytics offered by IIIT-B and upgrad.com ?

Hello,I can relate to your skepticism regarding any program in the analytics domain. There are hundreds of courses offered by numerous organizations catering to different market segments. Finding the right program that meets your requirements can be cumbersome.I inquired about programs offered by Great Lakes Institute of Management, Jigsaw Academy, IIIT-B and Upgrad, Aegis School of Business and online MOOCs on Udemy and DataCamp. I compared the programs on parameters like course content, faculty experience, course fee, schedule flexibility, application orientation and mentoring facilities. I finally selected the PG Diploma Course in Data Science [PGDDS] by IIIT-B and Upgrad as the aforementioned parameters specific to this program aligned with my learning objectives.I belong to the 4th Cohort of this program and after completing 5 months of the coursework I can share my experience and opinions. Is this program the right fit for me?The answer to this question will vary from person to person. As I had no prior experience in this domain, I was looking for a program with a beginner to intermediate course framework along with well-defined course structure. The program at IIIT-B offers 8 courses encompassing analytical tools like R, Python, Tableau, Excel, SQL, Hadoop* and Spark*. Domain specialization options in either banking, healthcare or e-commerce analytics along with a 3-month capstone project provides a platform to implement concepts in a practical setting. Interesting application-based case studies and assignments encourage you to incrementally improve your skills and foster healthy competition among the cohort. With weekly submissions and periodic evaluations, the program ensures that you keep abreast with the rest of your cohort. I often find that people register for online MOOCs but often fail to complete the course on time due to lack of motivation and there are no provisions for mentors to keep track of your progress and performance.Since this program is not bound by traditional classroom constraints, flexibility in terms of learning hours makes it beneficial for working professionals to balance work commitment with their desire to pursue a certification program in Data Science. Accessibility on mobile or web platforms options makes accessing content easy and instantaneous.Student mentoring along with career guidance facilities makes this program unique as it can help you assess roles in the analytics domain that match your skill set and experience. For someone entering this domain as a novice, these insights can be crucial in shaping future career decisions. The majority of individuals looking for a study program in analytics are beginners looking to gain some experience in the domain and develop their skill set. This program covers most of these bases and is, therefore, a worthy option to be considered. The program costs roughly 2.25 lakhs at the time of my application and there are some payment flexibility options if required.I will acknowledge that there are many free platforms to learn specific concepts from Google, edX, and Coursera. However, for many students trying to learn from these resources without guidance or a refined course structure might find it overwhelming leading to ineffective learning. On the resume front completing these courses from these free repositories will inevitably help you improve your skill but may not garner much interest when mentioned in your CV/resume. Having completed a certified program from a reputed institution like IIIT-B gives you that brand advantage. You may choose to do the PG diploma program from IIIT-B and chose specific MOOCs to complement your learning or to specialize in certain topics. This will greatly improve your chances of breaking into the analytics job market. [I will take this opportunity to mention that the PGDDS program doesn’t cover specific topics in detail. For example, the statistics aspect is not covered in as much detail as one might expect. However, the course content encourages you to read additional reference material to broaden your knowledge. This content gap can be covered and supplemented by online MOOCs and reference books].I strongly encourage you to identify your learning objectives and list down topics that you might want to learn. Then access the course brochures like the one on PG Diploma in Data Science | Data Science Certification | UpGrad and assess if your requirements align with the curriculum. Interact with the present cohort through LinkedIn forum and weigh out the benefits versus the investment. This will help you narrow down on which program is the right fit for you.[Below I’ve provided detailed inputs regarding different facets of the PGDDS program]Program Curriculum:A brief summary of the courses covered in this program:The topics covered are from basic to intermediate level. Therefore novices in this domain will not have any learning disadvantages. Each course has weekly deliverable and accompanied by industry relevant case studies and assignments. Course performance is periodically evaluated through examinations on completed courses. A GPA system is followed and a score report can be viewed at any time on the platform. The course content is refined and well curated. There is a logical flow, and transition between modules and courses leading to a conducive and effective learning experience. I urge you to experience the platform and sample content by creating a free account on the http://learn.upgrad.com website. There is access to one module introducing terms in data science and concepts in Analytics along with a sample case study.Faculty and Industry Experts:The curated course content is delivered through subject matter experts comprising of professors from IIIT-B and industry experts from relevant analytics firms. Instructions and course concepts are explained vividly through clear illustrations and relevant examples.I thoroughly enjoyed the sessions conducted by Mr. Anand S. CEO at Gramener. His anecdotes from his professional career provide a memorable learning opportunity.Weekly Live sessions are conducted where the students can post relevant questions and doubts that will be cleared by the relevant subject matter expert or professor.Duration and Time Commitment:The course is spread over a duration of 11 months and weekly time commitment is stated as 8–10 hours but it often takes around 12–14 hours per week to cover the topics effectively.Diversely adroit Cohort and Discussion Forum Advantage:Each cohort comprises of 300+ students from diverse backgrounds, professional domains and age groups. The benefit of this diversity is leveraged through the discussion forum on the platform. An enthusiastic cohort ensures constructive discussions on topics relevant to Data Science and timely guidance to resolve doubts. Upgrad also conducts occasional social gatherings to provide an opportunity to interact with the members of the cohort in major cities.Student Mentor and Career Guidance Mentor:Each student is assigned a student mentor who keeps track of their performance and provides weekly updates along with any support or assistance with respect to the course. Apart from this, there is a team of teaching assistants to clear subject matter doubts. Each student can select a career guidance mentor from a diverse pool of established professional in the analytics domain. This is crucial for the student as it provides insights into possible analytical roles that align with your profile. Along with insights into resume building and developing a career plan.Certification from a Premiere Institute:Successful completion of the program requirements will result in the Issue of a Post Graduate Diploma in Data Science from the International Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore. This certification in combination with a matured analytical skill set can significantly open up opportunities in the professional data analytics market.Collaborations through Group Case Studies:Members of the cohort must form teams of 4 students and collaborate on a series of case studies. This provides an opportunity to work as a time to collectively formulate an innovative solution to the given business problem. I collaborated with one student from Philippines and two students from Kenya for my case studies. It provides a unique opportunity to interact with and learn from other students in the cohort. In conclusion, I urge you to consider this program as a noteworthy option while selecting a certification program. Source material on the course content and course deliverable and match it against your learning objectives. Consider the advantages in the aforementioned post and weigh the cost of the program against the projected educational benefits. Lastly, reach out to the current cohort of the program and discuss your doubts with them. Make your final decision based on all these inputs and your experience. I wish you the best of luck. May the force be with you.

How hard is it to become a tenured community college professor?

This question asks specifically about community college. I can speak to my experience as a newly tenured faculty member at a California community college. It is just my experience but a lot of it is typical for California. The TL:DR is the hard part is getting the tenure track job. The word “tenure” has scary connotations at the research university level. But this is not the case in the community colleges. Tenure is not a foregone conclusion but it is very rare that a tenure track faculty member does not earn tenure as long as they stick through the process. Part of the reason for this is that the jobs are highly competitive. It is unlikely for an unqualified candidate to make it through the hiring process. As far as my background, I have a bachelors degree in mathematics and a masters degree in pure mathematics. After graduate school I spent about a year working as an Actuary and another two years working in market research (doing a lot of data analysis). I started teaching as an adjunct and a community college in January of 2010 for the Spring semester. I took a second adjunct position in another district for the Fall semester (August 2010). By the time that semester ended I had decided this was the career I wanted. I started looking for full time work. One thing that was in my favor was that I was teaching mathematics. The largest departments in California community colleges are Math and English (ESL is usually up there). This meant that in the San Francisco Bay area there tended to be between 10 and 15 job openings a year. In many other fields there may not be any positions opening. One year I went to the area meeting of the Mathematical Association of America (I go most years). One of the talks was given by a sculptor who had developed a 3D marble maze game with some mathematics involved in the design. He was an adjunct sculpture instructor at a large Bay Area. He said that in 25 years of teaching there had never been a tenure track position open in his field.Tenure track positions open up on a yearly cycle. Hiring season is between about November and May. My second year of teaching I started to take applying to jobs seriously. But I didn’t get interviews. I got an interview at one of the schools where I was teaching and one in Portland (yes Oregon). The same thing happened the following year. My third year teaching I must have crossed a threshold where the screeners could check the “experienced” box. I got 8 interviews that year. The hiring process for a tenure track mathematics position goes as follows. Your application starts at HR. They have negotiated screening procedures with the math department. Typically the application requires you to submit a detailed work and education history, transcripts, a resume and cover letter, and then you usually have answer somewhere between 2 and 10 essay questions about your background, experience, teaching philosophy and your experience or intent regarding the role of faculty in the governance of the college. Some schools would ask me to explain a specific mathematical concept in writing or submit an exam covering specific material. Some schools asked me to submit one of my syllabi. Just submitting the application could easily be 20 hours of work. This was the case for a while until I had done enough applications that I could borrow from writing I had previously done.If you got past the HR screening your application would be sent to the math department’s hiring committee. Their job was to wittle the list down to no more than 20 candidates. Then those candidates would be invited for a first round interview. The first round interview typically consisted of a teaching demonstration and more teaching philosophy questions. Sometimes there would be math questions (aimed at answering sample student questions). Candidates would be informed ahead of time of a topic or topics and told to prepare a 10, 15 or 20 minute lesson on that topic. The interview would also include questions about teaching background, role of tenure track instructor, how to spot math anxiety. Every one of these interviews would ask how we acommodate teaching students with a wide variety of backgrounds. These interviews typically took about an hour. I would usually spend about 20 - 30 hours preparing for each teaching demonstration. From 2010 to 2015 I was invited to 30 tenure track first round interviews. After the department level interview the department would rank the candidates and cut the list down to 3 - 5 candidates. Those candidates were sent forward to the Presidential round interviews. I have been to four of these. These interviews usual were given for the president of the college and at leaset one of the Vice Presidents. Most also included representatives from the District management (the Chancelor’s office). They were primarily interested in the candidates background and how they would serve the institution. I was even asked what I saw the role of the faculty member in reaching out to the community. The job of this committee is to choose which candidate(s) to fill the open position(s). Technically those candidates have to be approved by the board of trustees but the only reason why those recommendations would not be rubber stamped is if the district had experienced serious financial hardships. I have only been given one job offerOk, now the tenure process. There might be some variation but most California community colleges have similar processes. For me it was a four year process. A tenure committee was formed. It consisted of two faculty from my department (thanks to math being a large department) and a Dean. My committee happened to include my Dean, who was technically my supervisor but it didn’t have to be that way. When I was hired I was hired for a one year contract. The first year the committee had to decide whether to recommend me for a second one year contract. The second year they were decided whether I deserved a two year contract. Then they got two years to decide whether to grant me tenure which comes with a “continuing contract”. The first two years I was evaluated in both Fall and Spring semester. The last two years I was only evaluated in the Fall. At the end of Fall of my fourth year my team recommended me for tenure. The Vice President of Instruction and the President of the college reviewed my tenure file and approved it. In April of 2019 the Board of Trustees (an elected body) approved my tenure as well as 8 other faculty at my college.Evaluation meant that each member of my committee had to observe two of my class sessions (usually for about an hour). Each class, the students would have to fill out surveys to give me and my team feedback on my effectiveness as an instructor. I also had to write a self-evaluation report describing what I was doing to stay current in the field. How I was planning on improving my teaching, and what I was doing to serve my responsibilities to the college. At the end of every semester my team would meet with me to report on what they saw and give me advice on what to work on for the next evaluation. Documents of those reports were put in my tenure file. The biggest take-away was that my committee was impressed with my skills creating a safe learning environment where my students felt comfortable speaking up when they needed help. That I had creative and effective ways of using technology as part of the learning process. They were particularly impressed with the way that I would immediately take feedback from them or from my students and seek out ways to improve my teaching in those areas.Ultimately the goal of a well designed tenure process should just that. To ensure that the tenure candidate is motivated to improve themselves as an instructor. That they have the tools to do so. And that they will do their part to serve the institution. Teaching is a constant job of improvement. A teacher is never 100% effective but the best ones are always striving to get there.A community college is similarly never 100% effective but should always be striving for that goal. Faculty play a crucial role in that struggle for improvement of the institution. Tenure track faculty must find areas of college governance where they are passionate in working to improve how the college is run.Gaining tenure was technically a four year process. But that ignores the hard part. Spring of 2019 I was awarded tenure. That was my 19th semester teaching. When I was adjunct I taught summer classes too. Even before I realized I wanted this career my life experience was contributing to the success of that ambition. My three years of industry work allow me to tell my college students what working in an office is going to be like for them. And how statistics can be applied in the real world. My graduate work gave me intuitive understanding of mathematics so that I know how the math I teach works behind the scenes. I also taught classes for 3 years in graduate school. I came to my undergraduate institution knowing I wanted to teach eventually. I got experience tutoring and assisting instructors. I took math education courses an participated in a program designed for students wanting to become high school teachers. My first teaching job was at age 16, teaching swimming. I did that from age 16 to age 20.So you can decide. Getting tenure at a community college was a fairly enlightening 4 year experience. But it was a culmination of 9.5 years of teaching experience. I had been developing as a teacher for 24 years.

What is the process of getting admission in Canada for an M.Sc?

The basic steps for applying abroad are:Identifying universities and the course of your interestRequest universities for application formsTaking various required testsArranging and preparing essays and recommendation lettersCompleting and sending application forms along with required documentsApplying for VISA after obtaining I-20 from the collegeSelecting UniversityWhile selecting the right course and University keep in mind the following points –Your academic grades (including achievements)Test scores (GRE/GMAT/SAT/TOEFL/IELTS)Your financial capacityMajor (Specialization) subjects that you are interested inTerm of entry (Fall/Summer/Spring)The rank and reputation of the UniversityThe student to faculty ratio of the collegeThe location of the school (Big city/Small town/Rural setup)The climatic conditions (not to be stressed, unless you have health constraints)Pre-applicationA pre-application is a tentative list of schools that you would like to apply to. On the basis of your academic profile, your probable test scores and financial ability compile a list of universities to which you must send a letter requesting further information. At this stage, you can write to the selected 25-30 universities. You can directly request application materials from the universities. There are three ways to get application forms.Requesting Application Forms via emailRequesting Application Forms via Air MailDownloading from the university websiteDocuments Required For AdmissionCompleted Application formEssay/s or writing sampleStatement of Purpose required for graduates and optional for undergraduatesResume for MBA StudentsOfficial score reports of SAT/TOEFL/GRE/GMAT to be sent by ETSLetter from Bank stating – funds available for studyAffidavit of Financial Support i.e. letter signed from sponsor or parentTranscripts and Mark sheets from College or UniversityCertificates of Extracurricular ActivitiesRecommendation LettersLetter of reference or recommendation letter plays a very important role in the admission process especially for Master’s and Doctoral courses. A recommendation letter is a signed statement from a person who knows you well professionally or has taught you in a subject that is related to the course you are applying to. It should list your positive and negative qualities, strengths and weaknesses, your character and integrity and other such information. The author or teacher must indicate his position, how long he/she has known the applicant and in what capacity. He/she should briefly discuss the need, importance and usefulness of the study the applicant proposes to undertake. Authors are usually asked to rank applicants in their letters of recommendation, which helps admission officers to interpret the academic credentials of foreign students. Students should obtain letters of recommendation (often on the prescribed forms sent by the institutions) from teachers who know them as a person as well as a student. You may like to request your author to give concrete examples that may show your qualities and help your case.Essays / Statement of PurposeThe personal essays, and/or statement of purpose, also play a very important role in the process of evaluating your application for both admission as well as financial aid because it gives the faculty, assessing your application, information about you as an individual. For MBA candidates this is probably the most important criterion. In the statement of purpose, which must be concise, the student must define his or her academic goals, and/or research plans. It should include justification for choosing the academic program and specialization, and for selecting the particular college as well as the advantages and benefit of studying that particular course.

One of the best form creators available for small businesses. Very user friendly and functional. I use it to collect customer information off my Google Business contact icon. What surprises me is how Google doesn't mind and actually sends customers to my CocoDoc landing page now even on searches. That tells me that Google algorithms respects their business website. Great product and I recommend it to everyone! I can't believe it is still free.
