What has your child’s school done that got you so mad, you went in and read the riot act to the teacher or principal?

Writing this anonymously for the privacy of my family.A while ago my middle sister, 18 months younger than I, was due to sit her A-Levels. My middle sister is very intelligent but has imposter syndrome, mostly because she works hard to have the knowledge that she does. She now has a PhD in astrophysics and has worked for a well known US space agency. In school she used to get very stressed during exam season, putting an extreme amount of pressure on herself to get top marks, especially in science. It wasn’t anything to do with upbringing, I was super chill with exams, even at university. She always had a career in science as her goal and she wanted to do what she could to achieve that, which I admire the hell out of.Well, all the stress she put on herself led her to having a complete nervous or mental breakdown, I’m not sure there is any correct terminology for it but she basically broke down and said she wanted to kill herself rather than take the exams. She was good friends with some of her science teachers, having helped out with classes and mentored younger students in science class and she confided in one of her most trusted teachers that she felt like killing herself, she did this via text from home. The next thing I know there’s an ambulance outside insisting they need to enter our house and check on the welfare of my sister. My mum and dad were at work, I was 19, sisters 18 and 16 so not an issue. The paramedics wanted to take my sister away, she was mortified. She couldn’t believe her teacher had sent an ambulance to our house. I know there are probably safeguarding rules that meant she had to, but my sister wasn’t on school property so I’m not sure of the rules. My sister was beside herself telling me she didn’t want to kill herself she just got so upset that’s what she said and didn’t mean it, not really. When you’re in such an emotional state sometimes you say you want to kill yourself, end your life etc but in my sisters case she didn’t truly mean it. I explained this to the ambulance people and eventually, satisfied and probably because she was 18 and not a minor they left. Now my sister was horrified and felt betrayed by someone she thought was her friend. In my opinion I think the teacher in question allowed the relationship with my sister to be too close in the first place (for clarity the teacher was a woman). Obviously this teacher passed on all this to the head of sixth form who then called my dad.Because my sister had verbalised wanting to harm herself due to exam stress she was banned from school premises except to go to her exams and barred from going to the end of year dinner dance (basically like a wedding reception, set tables with a 3 course meal followed by dancing. It’s as close as we get to a prom I guess). So instead of trying to help my sister deal with the stress she was experiencing sitting these exams she was banned from school premises and being with her friends. The reason? She was a danger to other students!!!Nowhere, at any time had she threatened the lives of other students or the schools, she was a young girl who needed support and instead they took it all away from her. Needless to say my sister was angry, heartbroken and felt betrayed as well as all the exam stress she had put on herself. My dad, after talking to my sister that night, went into school the next day and “read them the riot act”. He’s a very intelligent, well articulated calm man, but he let it rip on the head of sixth form who had taken these steps without consulting any other teacher, him plus my mum or even my sister. The head of sixth form said the teacher felt uncomfortable having my sister in school, all because she had confided her feelings in someone she thought she could trust, someone who had built up a casual relationship with my sister and couldn’t handle it when shit got real.I don’t know what my dad said but he couldn’t change the head of sixth form to let my sister back in school, but did allow her to go to the dinner dance as it wasn’t on school property. My sister took it, but she was very embarrassed and upset.Me and my younger sister though… we took a slightly different route. In the dead of night we snuck onto the school playing field with brightly coloured spray cans and drew a huge penis with Mr XYZ is a bellend written big enough to see from the top floor of the school. On the paths leading to school we expressed the same sentiment sometimes using wanker instead of bellend. I should note he wasn’t well liked anyway, in fact bellend was one of his nicknames amping kids so tying the crime to me, a model student and my sister (though on her own more likely to do something like this) we would never be suspects.Going in the next morning with everyone asking who had spray painted the playing field and pavements and saying how legendary it was, was amazing. To this day me and my younger sister have NEVER confessed (apart from now) and I’m pretty sure we’ll take it to our graves :)

Why is getting a PhD in Physics considered difficult?

Let’s see. It’s taken me 4 years of high-school, 2 years of sixth form/college, 3 years of undergraduate, 1 year of masters and 3 and a half years of my PhD at one of the best universities in the UK. In total that’s 13 and a half years of formal education, at least 8 years of which involved serious independent study, taking up much of my free time! (though I loved it!)I liken studying physics/mathematics to learning a new language every few weeks. Every new idea you encounter usually entails layers upon layers of new mathematical formalism and physical concepts (many of which are extremely abstract and (deliciously) utterly unlike everyday thinking!) We’re talking about some of the most forbiddingly advanced mathematics in the world here. If you didn’t enjoy maths in school, multiply that by some stupendous number and extend the experience for a decade or more!Getting this far is extremely hard, but if you love the subject, it’s also extremely rewarding!I am currently writing a BOOK on Quantum Gravity. If that sounds good to you, and you’d like to support me in this venture, please head over to my Patreon page! Many thanks :DAlex.

Why don't secondary schools in the UK introduce 'drivers ed' lessons like those in high schools in the USA?

The number of children who can drive in a British secondary school is minimal and the number who are legally allowed to drive on a public road is non-existent. Secondary school ends at 16 (unless you go to a non-English school which ends at 18): driving age is 17.Now, if you're asking about driver education in sixth form colleges and their vocational equivalent… Bear in mind that in the UK children specialise in studies a lot earlier than in the US. While modular university education exists, allowing some students to study side subjects in their first year, on the whole if one goes to university — as 50% of young people do — one goes to study one's chosen subject. This pushes academic specialisation in sixth form college from age 16 to 18. If one takes a vocational route, again one would expect to study for that profession.Driver education would be imminently useful for few people (very few 17 year olds can afford to drive immediately due to insurance costs) and would come at the expense of study time. Besides, the British driving test is highly rigorous and existing driving coaches teach driving to a high standard (mostly). Road deaths per head of population are lower than in the US even after adjusting for the size of the country and therefore greater number of miles driven in the US.Learning to drive is a personal decision that requires personal responsibility and, in some cases, brings personal gain. Driver education in schools socialises a cost for which the associated benefit falls primarily on the individual.
