The US federal court system is divided into twelve geographic circuits, or regions, as shown on the map at the bottom of this answer.When lawsuits that originate in the geographic area covered by the First Circuit are appealed, they are heard by the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.When lawsuits that originate in the geographic area covered by the Second Circuit are appealed, they are heard by the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.When lawsuits that originate in the geographic area covered by the Third Circuit are appealed, they are heard by the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.And so forth.There are a total of thirteen federal circuit courts. The thirteenth is the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The Federal Circuit’s jurisdiction is restricted by subject matter, rather than geography. The Federal Circuit hears appeals on matters related to international trade, intellectual property, government contracts, veterans’ appeals, and a few other subjects. Approximately 2/3 of the cases that appear before the Federal Circuit involve intellectual property disputes.[Note: This map shows eleven of the regional circuits. Judge Amy Coney Barrett has been on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals since November 2, 2017, so she has almost three years on the bench. She also clerked for Judge Silberman at the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals for just over 2 years when nominated to the Supreme Court.Justice Thomas had been on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals for just under two years when he was nominated to the Supreme Court in 1991.Justice Breyer had served on the First Circuit Court of Appeals for fourteen years prior to his nomination by President Clinton in 1994.Justice Alito served on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals for 25 years before his 2005 nomination.Justice Sotomayor was a federal judge in the Southern District of New York for six years before joining the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in 1998. She served there until her nomination to the Supreme Court in 2009.Justice Kagan had no judicial experience. She had been nominated to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals in June 1999, but the nomination was never taken up. After several years as a professor and eventually dean at Harvard Law School, she served as Solicitor General for 15 months before being nominated to the Supreme Court in 2010.Justice Gorsuch served on the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals for about ten and a half years before being nominated to the Supreme Court in 2017.Justice Kavanaugh served on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals for 12 years prior to his nomination to the Supreme Court in 2018.Judge Barrett has more judicial experience than Chief Justice Roberts, Justice Thomas, and Justice Kagan did at the times of their respective nominations to the Court.
