SENECA FALLSThe Seneca Falls Convention was the first women’s rights convention in the United States. Held in July 1848 in Seneca Falls, New York, the meeting launched the women’s suffrage movement, which more than seven decades later ensured women the right to vote.Deliberately modeling it on the 1776 Declaration of Independence, the Declaration of Sentiments was read by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, then each paragraph was read, discussed, and sometimes slightly modified during the first day of the Convention when only women had been invited and the few men present were asked to be silent. The section on voting was the most contentious, It was adopted unanimously in the morning session of July 20.The document and the convention that produced it were met at the time with widespread amazement and a mocking press for calling for women's equality and rights. The mention of women voting and the criticism of the Church were especially targets of derision and irony.Western New York was a site of intense religious revivalism during the middle of the 19th century. Due possibly to the ease of travel offered by the Erie Canal and an expanding rail system, the region became extremely popular and was related to other reform movements of the period such as abolition, women's rights, and utopian social experiments. The term “burnt over district” was coined by Reverend Finney, who referred to a "burnt district" to denote the area in central and western New York State that had been so heavily evangelized as to have no fuel (unconverted persons) left to burn (convert) with the fire of the Lord. Whatever the cause, the Genesee region in particular certainly had more than its share of cults and true believers as wave after wave of religious revival spread across the region.Besides being the geographical origin of Mormonism, the region was home to the immediate Second Coming cult espoused by William Miller (Millerism), the Free Methodism of Benjamin T. Roberts, the Millennial Kingdom of John Humphrey Noyes called the Oneida Society, the Fourierist utopian socialist movement, a Shaker community, and several Pietist enclaves. Ahh, New York! What a beautifully shaped state! It's like a sideways T with a tail!Due to it's unique topography, various geographic descriptions have been created. We'll explore those through the answer.The answer will be split into parts:Upstate and Downstate New YorkQuadrants of New YorkRegions of New York (overview)Regions of New York (in detail, + subregions)(Now a Redirect due to length) National EnclavesNote: Section 1 is by far the most text heavy. 2–6 are more self-explanatory.Upstate and Downstate New York:“New York City" can be defined multiple ways. It can mean the city proper, or the greater megacity, the Metro/Tristate Area. (And for some, only Manhattan..)People living in NYC (at least, or especially, those who don't know or understand New York very well) like to define it at the border of the Bronx and Yonkers. They haven't travelled anywhere else in New York, and simply don't know any better. However, if you live outside the NYC Metro Area and tell this definetion to someone, you'd better add a second and third head to your shoulders to try to make the statement seem a wee less weird.People in the Hudson Valley region (most of which is in the NYC Metro Area) are most uncertain what to do with this, most identify as Downstaters themselves, and their life revolves around the City, tho they may “code-switch" when going into the City proper. They may also use certain landmarks.For those from very far away, the divide may as well be the entirety of Lower New York (the entire Catskills and HV regions), without refinement.Regardless, from anywhere away from NYC, the HV and LI the depth of the differences becomes obvious. Commuter routes, socioeconomic connexions, suburbs and exurbs, speech patterns, mentality and culture, center-of-identity (NYC vs not-NYC), heck it becomes a poignantly evident divide.The Catskills act as something of a natural divide within New York, tho the Northern face is less travelled from the South.)Based on the socioeconomic, cultural, dialectic, and commuter factors the most interregionally pervasive Upstate-Downstate divide splits Dutchess county from somewhere just above Kingston/New Paltz and travels something like west-southwest thru Lower New York.This corresponds to the county-by-county map which outlines the Tristate Area, albeit with a little more subtlety as to which townships are included. Downstate New York is the New York portion of the NYC Tristate Area.Upstate and Downstate are great and all, but they don't define self-ascribed regions within New York. “Upstate" especially isn't a particularly “meaningful" term, and it doesn't describe ones regional identity. In short, these are umbrella terms for NYC-centric New York and non-NYC-centric New York, respectively, but not how New Yorkers really identify or see themselves.In reality New York has about a dozen regionalities.
