Have you ever reported something to the police, and what happened next?Yes, but often with very mixed results depending on the jurisdiction.Where I currently live in Florida, the Lake Mary City Police are very responsive and seemingly quite competent. Everything I see indicates that they handle situations well and take appropriate action. Overall, Lake Mary is known for being an upscale city, and it shows.Previously, I lived in an even more upscale neighborhood in Maryland. But it wasn’t a city and didn’t have its own police force. We depended on Montgomery County. Over the next 30 years, there were several incidents showing me that the police in that county are less than what one hopes for…Before I even moved in, my multi-million dollar house was burned to the ground by an arsonist. My house was number 100 burned that year by an arsonist who picked certain homes, and mine fit the profile exactly. When asked why they didn’t alert me to the danger so I could protect my house, their answer was that they didn’t want me to do anything that would scare the arsonist away. But they also did nothing themselves to monitor my house - no patrols, no guard, nothing.After moving in, I noticed a beat-up old car parking overnight on the dead-end street leading to my house. This went on for several days, and I saw that two men were sleeping in it overnight and they certainly WERE NOT neighbors. So I called the police who came about 5 hours later to investigate. Their report to me: They identified the two men. They were known burglars, but they only broke in to commercial businesses and probably won’t bother me.One morning I work up to discover that someone had run down every street light on the dead end. These were 5 ornamental “post lamps” made of fiberglass on concrete bases, all run down. I called the police and the officer who responded asked how I knew that the wind didn’t knock them over. I pointed out the tire tracks in the grass and the imprint of the tread on the side of some of the poles. “Maybe someone rode over them in the dark after they were blown over?” Suffice to say that there was no further investigation by this officer or any other.Some neighbors noticed bullet holes in the front windows of their home, and discovered bullets embedded in the far wall. Several homes were attacked over the course of several weeks. My house was too far back from the road and positioned in a way that did not make it a good target. After being reported, the shootings stopped, but no arrests were ever made.There were no water and sewer utilities in this area. One property in the neighborhood had failed its “perk test”. meaning it was unbuildable. Indeed, adjoining properties had great difficulty drilling for potable water and one drain field had to be moved uphill because if flooded after heavy rains, bringing sewage to the surface. For more than 30 years, every effort had been made to find a way build the necessary drain field. Then, the head of the permits office retired, and shortly thereafter his replacement issued a building permit with no new testing. I reported this fraud to the police, who said the new head of the office said there were new test results showing the property had passed. I pointed out that there were no new tests, but they didn’t care. I didn’t care either - I was preparing to move. The lot was offered for sale at $350,000 to some unsuspecting buyer, who would build their multi-million dollar home and discover they couldn’t flush the toilets.
