What is it like being a human development major? Can you describe some of the topics you learn about?

I don’t know about human development programs at other schools, but at Penn State the Human Development and Family Studies major was multidisciplinary. This is one of the aspects I most enjoyed about my studies. I graduated over 25 years ago, so I am not sure that I can recall all the aspects I liked the most.We studied individuals and families from the following perspectives: history, biology, sociology, social psychology, psychology, cultural anthropology, systems theory, family development, and family systems theory, etc. And since Penn State is a major research institution, I learned from many leading experts in the respective fields. As an example:Adolescent development classes included the biological changes that occur during this stage, as well as the massive leap in cognitive development. We also learned how schools and other social institutions support or could better support adolescents based on this information. We also learned the importance of the peer group during this stage, and reasons parents still have great impact on their children. (Seems counter-intuitive to those who have teenagers at home.) Most helpful was learning the behavior of adolescents in response to all the rapid changes they experience, which was quite handy information to know when my two children were teenagers.Adult development classes not only included the biological changes that occur as one ages, but also ways society treats the older population and how this, in turn, helps to formulate the way older people feel about the aging process. We had guest lectures from a specialist in Alzheimer’s disease and the way this illness impacts the diagnosed individual and the family system. (This is when I learned about the high incidence of alcoholism in middle-aged women, who were often depleted and torn between taking care of older relatives, child rearing, and maintaining a job outside the family.) We also had guest lectures from anthropologists who studied aging in other cultures by actually spending lots of time within these cultures.Cross-cultural studies were presented in almost (or most) classes. This approach was so informative because it enabled students to recognize the extent that context and current expectations influence individuals, society and the resulting public policies.Another thing I liked about my experience at Penn State is that the major was flexible. Students could tailor their program depending on their goals after graduation, such as working in social services or going onto graduate school. With the guidance of our academic advisors, we were offered a sufficient number of elective credits so we could further explore aspects of the major we felt most interested.Again, I don’t know how my experience might differ compared to other schools. But I do know that I felt I had a well-rounded education on human development at all stages and the social contexts in which individuals grow and develop—from cradle to grave.

What does Alexander Finnegan think of the value of gender studies?

What is gender studies?Students learn about gender, sexual difference, masculinity and femininity. Courses examine the intersections of gender with race/ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic class, ability levels, sexuality, and additional dimensions of difference.[1]AlsoGender Studies is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the complex interaction of gender with other identity markers such as race, ethnicity, sexuality, nation, and religion. Gender— femininity and masculinity—is such a basic form of social organization that its operation often passes unnoticed.[2]But can I get a job? Some career options for gender studies graduatesArtist/filmmaker.Communications Officer.Counsellor.Cultural programs coordinator.Diversity officer.HR coordinator.International development.[3]Is it right for me?Sadly, economic prospects for many jobs in liberal arts related fields are limited, depending upon one’s major. A college degree is no longer the ticket to the middle class as it once was 50 years ago. The jobs listed above are going to be limited in demand. Further, some right wing HR managers will likely discriminate against you for this major. Decades ago, just having a college degree in the liberal arts showed employers that you can read, research, think critically, and write well. These are valuable skills. But neoliberal capitalism has changed the nature of society dramatically. The West has become a highly technocratic place. Credentialism has limited the avenues for success of liberal arts majors unless they attend in-demand graduate or professional schools. If you come from a middle class family or below, survival is unfortunately something you have to consider. College shouldn’t be job training. If it is, then why aren’t capitalist employers paying for it? Why should labor pay to train themselves to earn profits for the owners of the means of production? We live in an inverted world, indeed. With college degrees costing $100K+, liberal arts have become the purview of the rich. We have regressed to medieval times. Everyone else is supposed to major in a STEM field, learn a trade, go to the military, or go to prison. Homelessness is the “threat” by which we live. There is a value in studying gender studies. This is especially true for people who are working to integrate their sexuality as they come of age. If you are attending college to get a job, then consider how your options may be limited by selecting this major.Liberal arts degrees are not “worthless.” In fact, studying this area enables us to ask the most important questions of who we are as members of the human race, where society has been, should be, and is heading, how to read well, write well, think critically, and to appreciate the arts in a way that breathes life into our existences.Footnotes[1] Knowledge & Skills Gained [2] About - Gender Studies[3] Careers in gender studies - University of Victoria
