PDF Editor FAQ

Does putting castor oil in your navel help with dry eyes?

This is a tricky kind of question that touches how different people engage with evidence and proof. I’m a practical-minded person: skeptical but not cynical with regard to ideas about how we can help ourselves and each other. So here is what I see pertaining to your question:There are plenty of people saying that it will help with dry eyes (and a large number of other disorders at the same time!)It is plausible. Blepharitis (irritation of the eyelid margins— that causes a large fraction of “dry eyes”) is rooted in inflammatory pathways, and skin microbiome, and is directly related to dysfunction of a particular oil that is secreted in eyelid ducts. There is scientific evidence that Castor oil is a modulator of inflammatory pathways (Viera 2001) and other research showing antimicrobial activity (Valera 2012, for example). It is possible that the oil itself is physically transferred to the eyes by external transfer and substitutes for the oil that healthy eyes produce naturally to limit evaporation. There appears to be no evidence that it works. I can find no systematic studies in which the therapy was tested in comparison to a placebo and the results were recorded and then analyzed.Though there is no evidence of function, I get the feeling that nobody has ever checked. Castor oil is inexpensive and not patentable, so there is no financial incentive for companies to pay the very large amount of money required to do this kind of study. So, you can decide for yourself what you want to believe. Before you get too excited about what I said in #2 above, remember there will be literally tens of thousands of compounds both natural and synthetic that would fit this criterion. The recommendation of a discipline such as Ayurveda might be worth considering. Though even this claim is subject to proof. Just because someone says that this is an Ayurvedic therapy does not mean that it is. The fact that not a single one of the 10 or so websites I checked that recommend castor oil in the navel provides even a hint of evidence that it is actually an ancient therapy is troubling. My thought on this: no commercial entity is going to check this for us. If it will ever be tested we are going to have to do it ourselves. If this idea resonates with you, pop this an upvote. If I see enough interest maybe we can start something.References:Viera, C. et al. Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol. 2001 Aug;364(2):87-95.Valera, M. et al.Gen Dent. 2012 Jul-Aug;60(4):e204-9.

If the 1985 Bears played the 2007 Patriots, who wins?

In case people aren't familiar with the 1985 Bears, I should preface with this:And this: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/chi/1985_roster.htm- > Notice the following players:Richard Dent, RDE - 17 sacksOtis Wilson, SLB - 10.5 sacks, 3 INTSteve McMichael, DT - 8 sacksDan Hampton, LDE - 6.5 sacksWilber Marshall, WLB - 6 sacks, 4 INTWilliam Perry, DT - 5 sacksMike Singletary, MLB - 3 sacks, 1 INT-> Also noticeLeslie Frazier, RCB - 6 INTDave Duerson, SS - 5 INTGary Fencik, FS - 5 INTMike Peterson - 4 INTFor comparison: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/nyg/2007_roster.htmUmenyiora - 13 sacksTuck - 10 sacksStrahan - 9 sacksFred Robbins, DT - 5.5 sacksKiwanuka - 4.5 sacksMitchel - 3.5 sacksGibril Wilson, CB - 4 INTSam Madison, CB - 4 INTAaron Ross, CB - 1 INTJames Butler, SS - 1 INTIn 2007, the Patriots featured Matt Light, Logan Mankins, Dan Koppen, Stephen Neal's bum right shoulder, and Nick Kaczur. By season's end, I think Neal was injured. And here's the big kicker: Secretly the Patriots aren't a very good pass-blocking team. I know Light, Mankins, and Koppen were Pro Bowl regulars and Neal was underrated, but Light was a technician prone to getting beat by talent, Mankins is sercetly a very spastic pass blocker, Koppen is only an average blocker who happens to be very smart on line calls, Neal's shoulders couldn't stay in one piece even though he was extremely underrated, and Kaczur stunk. I will never, ever forget just how flat-footed the Patriots' offensive line played in Super Bowl XLII. I played center for six years and right tackle for a year. It was the worst technique ever. They never initiated contact and tried to just catch Umenyiora, Strahan, and Tuck. You don't catch men that size - you initiate before they get a full head of steam, especially if they're also faster than you are.Let's also not forget: the 2007 Giants had no secondary. Sam Madison was old, Gibril Wilson was never anything special, James Butler is out of the league, and Aaron Ross was about 2-4 years away from developing. Furthermore, their linebackers weren't very good in coverage. Kiwanuka is a great athlete for a DE, but only an average athlete at OLB with stiff hips. He plays strong side to help stuff the run and jam TEs.And before we go and throw Jim McMahon under the bus for only posting 15 touchdowns against 11 picks, let's not forget that Eli Manning threw 20 picks and lost 13 fumbles in 2007. The Giants fumbled twice in the Super Bowl, recovered once, and punched the other one out of bounds. Also, it's not for lack of an opportunity to pick Eli Manning off:Light isn't stopping Richard Dent any more than he stopped Jason Taylor who also played at more like 265-275, Mankins, Koppen, and Neal aren't stopping McMichael and Perry, and Kaczur is getting pants-ed by Dan Hampton almost like Max Lane did in 1996 against Reggie White (Lane and Kaczur both stink, Reggie White was better, but Wilson and Marshall pose overload issues for the already-challenged Kaczur)Randy Moss is getting jammed for one quarter and quitting. One concern is the strong safety, a position that was designed for an era of running the football first, but you make sure to keep the free safety to Moss' side of the field. Moss has a history of checking out of games.Your other corner is on Welker and your strong safety is on Gaffney in the slot. Both play with outside leverage to force them in towards your OLB help. Assuming your pass rush can get there in under 3 seconds and you have that safety over the top of Moss, you don't need a safety over the top against Welker and Gaffney as long as you get a good jam and keep decent coverage. Plus pressure up the middle obscures passing lane visibility.Check out the Patriots last year without a deep threat against the Steelers:http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=311030023^^^ This is another game I'll never forget, because the Steelers played a 10-1 defense with Polamalu as the lone high safety. You could definitely work a 4-6 or a 3-3-5 against the 2007 Patriots as long as your free safety is over the top of Moss.Spagnulo's game plan for Super Bowl XLII involved turning Brady's habit of winding down the play clock to get defenses to show against him. It was heavy on stunts and delayed blitzes, none more masterful than the one executed by Kawika Mitchell to pin the Pats at the 1 yard line. Some may say the 4-6 defense might not work, but I contend that it would. Wilson and Marshall had 7 picks between them and showed they were comfortable in their drops and the 4-6 works similarly to the disguises that Spagnulo used. Furthermore, the Bears could get after it because the 2007 Pats had little running game. If forced, Buddy Ryan could use the 3-3-5 and still have Dent, Perry, Hampton, Wilson, Marshall, and Singletary who the Patriots would have to respect. If you hit Brady early, he falls apart lately. A look at Brady's recent playoff history:Super Bowl XLV - choked the first quarter away with that dumb safety and set the tone for a terrible game; threw an ugly underthrown pick to a hobbled Gronkowski; got happy feet despite decent blocking2011-2012 AFC Championship Game vs. the Ravens - awful. absolutely awful. Sterling Moore bailed Brady out by knocking that pass out of Lee Evans' hands2011-2012 AFC Divisional Round vs. the Broncos - good against a Broncos team that only made the playoffs because they play in one of the worst divisions in NFL history (the AFC West, only slightly better than the NFC West was in 2008 when the Cardinals won it with an 8-8 record and the division combined to win something like 5-7 games that weren't against each other)2010-2011 AFC Divisional Round vs. the Jets - threw a stinker of a pick to Shaun Ellis on a poorly thrown screen; never figured out Rex Ryan's defense2009-2010 AFC Divisional Round - with Welker hurt, Randy Moss folded like a foldable chair and they got spanked by the Ravens2008 - injured2007 - Super Bowl XLII loss where his line couldn't block and he couldn't capitalize on the Giants' mediocre secondary2007 AFC Championship Game - beat a Norv Turner coached team... woo hoo2007 AFC Divisional Round - beat a Jaguars team with Jack Del Rio as coach and David Garrard at QB... woo hoo2006 - lost to the Colts because Reche Caldwell was his #1 receiver2006 - beat the Marty-ball Chargers (the LT crying because he can dish out trash talk but can't take it in return game - Ellis Hobbs doing Merriman's lights out dance at mid field)2005 - lost in Denver on that Champ Bailey pick that should have been a fumble and a touchback, and a phantom pass interference call on Asante Samuel by the back judge in the end zone 30 yards away from the play when the side judge could clearly see that Samuel was a solid 7 yards behind Brandon Marshall... anyhow Brady played poorly2005 - another win against the hapless Chargers (the Troy Brown fumble and forced fumble game)2004 - Super Bowl win against the EaglesSo. I'm probably not giving Brady enough credit for beating the Chargers because I lost all respect for Norv Turner as a head coach and don't think that Schottenheimer was much better, but Brady hasn't won a big game big game against a competently coached team since at least 2006 if not 2004 (and one could argue against Andy Reid's and Donovan McNabb's 7-minute drill at the end of that Super Bowl, too).Even under modern rules, I can count on one hand the number of calls future Hall of Famer Randy Moss got (one pass interference against Buffalo that was too blatantly obvious not to call, no illegal contacts of note) and Wes Welker (maybe one pass interferences and a couple illegal contacts). They just didn't call it for Moss and Welker like they did for the Colts, whose Bill Polian was the source of the whining that led to the emphasis.Bears win, 10-7. Pats' defense contains Payton, but the Patriots go nowhere and Brady turns it over once or twice under pressure. Brady gets happy feet after getting hit early. The 4-6 or the nickel holds up as long as the pass rush gets there before Moss can beat them downfield. Bears win time of possession as well. Also of note: roughing the passer didn't get emphasized until after 2008 where Pollard dived at Brady's knee (three years after the Steelers' Kimo Von Oelhoffen took out Carson Palmer's knee in what I refuse to believe was an accident considering how clear his path was to Palmer and the unnatrual way he twisted). In 2007, roughing the passer wasn't as big of a deal.Furthermore, spearing and unnecessary roughness didn't reach a crescendo until 2010-2011 with the rise of concussion studies and the lawsuit by former players against the league.I will say, however, that the 2003 and 2004 Patriots would have kicked the Bears' asses. They were clutch, their defense was deep, and Rodney Harrison would have had a thing or two to say about William Perry at fullback. Also, Brady had balls back then.

If a bullet fell on my head at maximum velocity, could it penetrate my skull?

The Falling Bullet: Myths, Legends and Terminal Velocity“Major General Julian Hatch, a U.S. Army firearms expert, did extensive testing on ballistics and falling projectiles in the 20’s. He calculated that .30 caliber rounds will reach terminal velocities of 300 feet per second (90 m/s) on descent, and determined that, while most bullets will leave a small dent in the ground when they land, that same bullet travelling between 200 to 330 feet per second can still penetrate human skin.”What’s this “no air resistance business? I’m on Planet Earth. Where are you?“Glock 19” has no bearing on the problem. A 115 grain bullet (as a Glock 19 might shoot) does. I assume that what you are asking about is this: if a bullet is fired straight up then falls straight down, could it penetrate one’s skull? Most of what I have read says that the terminal velocity actually reached is enough to break the skin (and perhaps give you one heck of a headache, but would be unlikely to pierce the skull and kill you.
