Do you know how much energy the Earth receives from the Sun every year? 3.85 Yottajoules! Yeah that’s right. A number so big, you haven’t even heard of it. Yotta is 10^24. Or in other words 3.85 million Exajoules, if that helps.So yes the Sun alone could power humanity’s development for a long time. Theoretically.The real science behind why we haven’t all started using solar energy or any other kind of renewable energy for that matter is not entirely science, there’s also logistics involved, but lets not get ahead of ourselves.Setting aside the economics for now. Any type of fuel or ‘energy-giver’ has a thing called its Energy Density. Which is the energy stored within a unit volume or mass of a substance with only the extractable energy being measured.Currently the highest energy density fuels known to man are nuclear materials followed by hydrocarbons. But there is only so many rivers you can dam and turbines you can plant before cities and towns start drowning or fishes and birds start to go extinct. So even if you think that you’re Captain Planet as you look with disdain at the SUV that stops next you at a red light in Shanghai, that SUV is actually doing less harm than your Tesla S P100D.To completely stop using hydrocarbons and polluting fuels we all need to be using electric driven vehicles power by clean electricity and right now our best bet is nuclear.There are countries with such ambitions, like Sweden for example, or Costa Rica, or Scotland.[4] Even China and India, but the problem is that the world hasn’t developed uniformly and as long as there are nations that are under developed and have people that are hungry for more, easier routes such as fossil fuels will be used to power that development.It is easy to sit in a chateau in France, or a modern home in Cali or even an upscale apartment in Mumbai and expound the merits of going green but until the world gets together and starts solving problems for everybody instead of just their own community, county or country things wont change fast, and this is where the industrial and political will comes in. You can’t expect developed nations to impose blanket carbon limits on the developing and underdeveloped world without providing technological or financial means to be able to sustain development otherwise.
