Why do people do postdocs? Isn't a PhD enough?

Post-doc is sort of an intermediate position between a PhD and a full-time lecturer. But it is not a degree. It is a paid position where you perform research more independently than you did during your PhD. It is chiefly meant to develop yourself towards becoming an independent scientist. Post-doc come in two flavours:Fellowships: This is when you write a proposal for a post-doctoral fellowship to the relevant funding bodies and secure the funding (usually for 3–5 years). The idea is yours, the money is yours, the motivation is yours, the work is yours, the papers are yours. Obviously, you can add the names of some established academics with whom you would want to work with i.e. they can act as mentors while you do your work independently. These fellowships are highly competitive.Open post-doc positions: This is when an academic has secured funding from funding bodies that includes money towards employing a post-doc for the project. It is like any other research job but within an academic setting. The core idea of the project is not yours but you do the work i.e. you design the experiments in conjunction with your principle investigator (PI), perform them, procure data, curate them and write research articles. Obviously, you would be an author on these papers, preferably first author if you have done all the field work and have improvised substantially on the initial idea. But controversies do exist as I have heard horrendous, often touching stories of many post-docs who were not recognised adequately by their PIs. On the other hand, there are also some cunning post-docs who claim recognition to unreasonable aspects. Some post-docs of eminent scientists have even claimed recognition for the Nobel prizes won by their PIs. These sort of open post-doc positions can be quite unsteady, hectic and even exploitable. Contracts can be short, average-paying (compared to their industry counterparts) and could lead to nowhere. So why then do PhD students go on to do post-docs? There are several reasons, many of which most people do not like to talk about. But there are five hard truths. People do post-docs mostly because:It is a tradition: Science loves traditions. The most traditional career route for an aspiring academic is to start with a PhD to a post-doc (one or many) to becoming a lecturer to then becoming a senior lecturer to a Reader and finally to becoming a Professor. There are different mix and match versions of these designations but they are all roughly the same. Most PhD students believe that this is the best route towards becoming a Professor. Many even assume that this is the only route possible. So, not many PhD students are even willing to look into other options. Being a tradition, the mind automatically chooses the option that appears more apparent and not the options that appear too radical or requires exploring.Lack of awareness: The career guidance department in the Universities around the world is a fairly new thing. Even today, not many PhD students are aware of the options beyond academia. In my own experience, all I have heard from people in academia are two options: academia or industry? But there is a whole new world out there (besides industries). For example, you could become a science communicator, work in public offices, work as a content writer in press, become patent attorneys, start a science podcast, become a field application scientist, enter into sales and marketing of science products, apply for start-up funds etc. These options are becoming more and more relevant these days since, as one previous answer pointed out, there is a paucity of academic positions relative to the number of PhD students that graduate. We need to get out there!Fear of being judged: This is not just a colossal but often a largely ignored issue. Many PhD students fear that venturing outside academia would lead to their academic fraternity looking down on them as failures who did not have the capacity or the capability to secure a position within academia. It is the mysterious pressure of an absurd assumption that people leaving academia are only doing so because they could not thrive in the highly competitive, cut-throat environment of the academic setting. This is not just complete non-sense but also depicts the inherent arrogance of some scientists who superstitiously believe in their intellectual superiority. Not everyone aspires to work within academia. Some just do not have the patience. Some want money money. Some want more recognition. Some want a more high-octane working environment that academia rarely offers. It is upto people to decide where they want to go. The good news is that this classical version of academia where ‘intelligent ones stay, dumb ones leave’ is very much frowned upon these days and it will only continue to do so.Aversion to teaching: Some researchers just want to do research. They are not interested in delivering lectures, mentoring undergraduates, marking exams, giving feedbacks and all the other gamut of duties associated with a lecturership. So, the most favourable option for such people is to remain a post-doc and focus on research only as long as the funding runs out.Comfort zone squatting: Some PhD students get lucky and end up in the labs of highly reputed researchers with huge amounts of funding. These PhD students are bright, productive and have a great rapport with their PIs. So, despite their awareness of the various other career options, they tend to work as a post-doc within the same lab for years together (some even 10 years!) Now, I am not against this practise. As I have mentioned in the last point, every person decides what they want to do. The only negative aspect associated with this practise is that it does not create a vacancy in the lab for a long, long time! Also, anecdotally, I have heard sad tales from ex-post-docs who very bitterly regret working for that many years as a post-doc. As much as one cannot condemn this practise, it must be discouraged in my opinion. So, here it is: my 2p towards explaining why people choose to do post-docs. I am sure anyone would appreciate the tough, often strenuous life of a researcher. It is as much dramatic as that of a movie star, only with less money, less glamour and less coverage!Pranav
