Is it worth studying an MBA for an Indian in the USA? Can one find a job after an MBA from an average university?

For anyone who is from a middle class family(like myself) and does not have a lot of disposable income, I would strongly recommend against going for an MBA in United States. My decision to go to United States was solely based on the frustration regarding the quota system to get into the IIMs. In hindsight, I should have just written CAT one more time and I could have cracked into a good school in India. As someone has already pointed out in a previous posts, there are a lot of factors which stack the cards against getting a job and eventually having a peaceful life.School Rankings/On Campus Recruitment: Unless you are getting an MBA from one of the top 10–15 MBA universities (check Forbes List), very few recruiters would visit the campus. I joined UC Davis Graduate School of Management(ranked ~35–40) in 2014 and over a period of 2 years, I hardly saw 3–4 companies that actually came to the campus and hired someone from our class.Cost: People highly miscalculate the cost of living and other fringe expenses related to living in US. It always tend to be more expensive than you initially planned. There a lot of random fees that come up and conferences that your university will ask you to attend which you would not have accounted for. So if you are a student like me who was going to United States thinking your savings are going to be enough, you are in for a surpriseInternships: I had straight As in all the classes that I took and I was one of the smarter kids in my class but securing an internship as an international student is a herculean task. As an international student, you tend to get picked last even though you ace every interview/exams/test. I had applied to approximately 1500 positions to get about 30 interviews. People might say my resume could have sucked but “Career Development Team” at UC Davis had carefully vetted my resume multiple times. I got an internship a month into Summer Quarter in June 2015. Atleast 3 of my international classmates either didn’t get an internship or decided not to look for internships because of bad job market.Sponsorship: I have been rejected for a position countless times only due to the fact that I need sponsorship. US Employers often tend to only hire American graduates for management positions. Even larger companies like Intel, HP, Cisco, Visa do not sponsor H1B visas for MBA candidates. It is difficult for the companies to justify hiring an international employee when they can find a local candidate easily to fill the role. To avoid this complexity and legal issues, companies completely avoid hiring international studentsJob Search: If Internship was a pain, the job search post graduation is even worse. I would have easily applied to over 2000 job positions to finally secure my dream job at Boomtown where I currently work. Career Development Teams pretend to help you but they give up as well. Since majority of the class already has offers by the time you graduate, they don’t care about a few people left. As long as the school’s numbers are 90%+ the CD Team thinks they did a good job.H1 B: Even after you do all the hard work and finally secure a job at a company who is ready to sponsor your H1B visa, your fate is decided by the H1B Visa lottery. For MBAs there is only one chance to apply for the H1B as compared to graduates from MS programs who fall under STEM that get 3 chances. Out of 5 Indian Students in my batch, 1 didn’t get a job, 2 didn’t get picked in H1B lottery and had to return to India and the remaining 2 of us got an RFE on our H1B.RFE (Request for Evidence): Make sure you hire the lawyer who submits the documents on time. I got my RFE on 23rd August 2017 and my lawyer didnt submit my documents till 7th November which was a week before the due date. Even after constant reminders and making all documents available 2 months in advance, things may go south if your lawyer just completely sucks.Visa Interview: My RFE got cleared on November 19th 2017 and I flew back to India to get my H1B visa stamped. Today was my Visa Interview and I received a white slip which will take anytime from about 1 week - 2 months to get cleared. In the new administration RFE and White Slips are handed off like candies adding to the frustration of the already complicated process.Over the last 3 years, I have lost a lot of brain cells thinking if I made the right decision to go to US. Even after doing everything right you might just waste a bunch of money in fees and not make it through simply because you were unlucky.I would urge everyone who are considering not just MBA but any other programs in US to research every aspect before you take than huge loan to pay for your fees. Anyone who is telling you otherwise, has either graduated before 2013 when pretty much everyone who applied for an H1B visa got one or has a bank balance that doesn’t get affected by fees.India is currently developing pretty fast and I am sure there are better opportunities available right here rather than wasting a few years of your life, sleep, hair, health and peace of mind.P.S. My answer is based on my personal experience and the experience of my fellow classmates and might not be applicable to everyone.
