How is the campus at IIT (ISM), Dhanbad?

The campus is great, spread over 593 acres on both sides of NH-32 and connected by India’s first intra-college smart underpass (393 acres + 200 acres).Another 240 acres is under process of acquisition. The facilities are excellent. We have the largest library in Asia, the largest Centre of Excellence in Research in India and probably the largest Academic Complex in India. There are 3 Mega Hostels for Boys with about 2200 seats each and three other normal hostels (Topaz, Emerald and Diamond) for boys. Girls have a cluster of Hostels under the name of Shanti Bhawan, Opal and Ruby. A new Mega Hostel for Girls called Rosaline has just been built. A new Mega hostel for boys, is under contruction at a cost of 123 crores. The campus is calm and serene, has all major amenities like a Subway, 6 ATMs, Food joints, canteens in every hostel, etcetera. IIT (ISM), Dhanbad campus is fully rainwater harvested and we also are replenishing the ground aquifer through an artificial recharge project.Internet connectivity is good, however officially restricted for boys not in their final year from 5:30 P.M. to 2:30 A.M. (there are workarounds, don’t fret). WiFi is only available at Jasper Hostel as of now and will soon be rolled out to other hostels as well (IIT Dhanbad has partnered with Reliance Jio 4G). This amenity though common is not available here in all hostels because till recently there was a ban on WiFi in educational institutions in Jharkhand by the state government which has since been lifted. All in all, the campus is extremely beautiful and serene. Frankly, it bears no resemblance to what people think of Dhanbad (it’s not all mines!)Some pictures for reference:Girls' Mega Hostel (Rosaline)The Diamond QuadrangleThe Mining RoadDiamond HostelJasper Hostel CourtyardEDC and NAC on the backdrop of Upper GroundHeritage Building during Basant'16New Lecture Hall ComplexJasper Hostel Courtyard with Emerald Hostel in the background. The Olympic Sized Swimming Pool in SAC which hosted the 34th National GamesJasper Hostel Block A & DCentral Library (Largest in Asia) (almost completed as you can see)Jasper Hostel at NightFrom top of New Academic Complex (probably the largest in India)Sunset by the NLHCThe campus in it's vast expanse from top of the NACNew Academic Complex in its mammoth entiretyMining RoadAmber Hostel, abode of Sophomores and JuniorsHeritage Building at NightHeritage Building during BasantHallowed Corridors of the Heritage BuildingComputer Science & Engineering Department (on left) and Executive Development Centre (on right)New Academic ComplexRuby LaneFor more insights, look at this with a smartphone: FotoFreaks - The Photography Club Of IIT - ISMPicture Credits: Foto Freaks, ISMDiaries, other individuals who are not accounted for, none of these pictures are my own, I only have supplied them here in accordance with my rights under fair use.

What is so special about "Bengaluru" city?

Bengaluru has been the heart of innovation since the advent of globalisation in India. Many initiatives by private and government bodies have helped it to grow exponentially. Beside being the IT hub, it is also catching up to become the research and development hub with many companies investing to develop ER&D capabilities there. One such initiative is Centre of Excellence - Internet of Things, it’s a joint venture of ERNET, DeiTy, NASSCOM and Government of Karnataka.

Will Oxford and Cambridge still be top universities after Brexit?

It is already tough for Oxford and Cambridge to retain their status as two of the world’s top universities when they lack the resources of the top American universities. Brexit will make it harder. However, there are some very smart people in both institutions who are trying to figure out how to adapt. I’m sure they have some kind of strategy in place. The last time I was on Oxford’s website. I noticed that they have a plan in place to help all employees who are European citizens post-Brexit, paying their legal bills if necessary. That kind of preparation is a no-brainer - the difficult task is not merely retaining current employees who are European citizens, but managing to attract more such employees. But my point is that Brexit will not take Oxbridge by surprise. So, how might they adapt? One strategy would be to persuade a post-Brexit British government that in order to achieve its goals, higher education funding must be focussed on maintaining the global status of Oxford, Cambridge and London. The plan is that, Post-Brexit, the UK will be a global centre of trade, open for business etc. Having two or three flag-ship universities that maintain their status as symbols of excellence, attracting smart people to study in the UK could be part of that strategy. Such money might come at the expense of other universities - better two or three world class universities, than thirty not-bad institutions. Maybe we will see Oxford and Cambridge working more closely with each other, funding joint projects. It is also possible - certainly if we continue with Boris Johnson as Prime Minister - that the government will allow universities to start charging British students more in fees. Entry to Oxford and Cambridge might become less focussed on academic merit, and more about whether you can afford the fees (and perhaps make a substantial donation to the institution). This wouldn’t do anything for the institutions’ academic reputation, but funds raised this way might help Oxford and Cambridge offer high salaries to attract top researchers. In other words, they might become more market-driven, trying to compete with elite American institutions at their own game.On reflection, I do not find either of these strategies to be attractive. They might be ways in which the universities could maintain their status, but they are not plans to maintain academic quality. (Except, perhaps, for the idea of more Oxford-Cambridge collaboration). As someone who loved my time at Oxford, and value so much the education I received there, it saddens me to think that these two great universities may be brought down as the result of the arrogance of a handful of Oxford alumni. David, Michael, Boris, Theresa, what have you done?PS:After I wrote this, I came across the following article from Cherwell, a newspaper run by Oxford students. It provides an informed discussion of the problems that Oxford will face, and also of the steps that are being taken to meet these problems: Oxford’s dependence on EU funds revealed
