PDF Editor FAQ
Which colleges accepted/rejected you (April 2019)?
Unlike most students on this list, I actually applied to only a small number of schools. In retrospect, this was probably a poor decision, but I can’t say I’m not happy with the results!GPA: 3.92/4.0 (weighted: 4.6)SAT: 1440/1600 (790 Math, 650 Reading- I was able to bump the 650 to a 690 on a later test, which makes my superscore a 1480)ACT: Nope!SAT Subject Tests: Math 2 (800), Physics (700)Extracurriculars: Member of National Art/Science Honor Society, Tutor kids in my high school on Calculus and occasionally physics (trust me the subject test score isn’t a valid indicator of my actual knowledge of Ohm’s law), Senior center volunteer, soccer team, this leadership group in my old high school, also captain of the math team in the same old high schoolHooks?: Well for starters I’m an URM (both parents from sunny Ethiopia), and I also am currently concluding my voyage on the journey for the IB diploma, so that’s something. I’ve also worked at a Kumon for two years.Safeties (or maybe just “Safety” singular):Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University: Daytona Beach- Accepted; $17,000 per year scholarship. (Kinda knew I was gonna get in here, but they had a fee waiver and a great Aerospace Engineering program so why not? If my other option doesn’t work out I’ll go here)Targets:Georgia Tech- Rejected (Kinda bummed out by this because their average SAT scores and GPA were way below mine, and this school was the first to send out their decisions; maybe the 700 in Physics was a turn-off for someone wanting to go into Aerospace?)NYU- Waitlisted (Didn’t really care much for this one, even though it had the same situation as Georgia Tech)Reaches (or maybe just “Reach” singular):Johns Hopkins- Accepted(I am literally still in denial that this school accepted me, especially since I live in Rockville, so it’s barely an hour from home. Bad news is, I kinda applied for financial aid a few months past their deadline, so I’m waiting for a decision on that. If that goes through though, you bet your sorry ass I’m going here!)EDIT: Good news! They accepted my (late) request of financial aid! See you guys in 2023, only this time my skin won’t be the only thing I’ll wear that’s black!EDIT #2: Wow this is blowing up! Just wanted to say that NYU later accepted me after the waitlist, not that it will ever influence my decision in going to JHU. I appreciate the sentiment, though! : ^)
Do I need a liability insurance for a soccer league even If I have the players signed a waver?
Though excellent practice, a singed waiver is only as good as it is written and as the state in which you reside will recognize same. For an interesting look at how well waivers may hold up in your state, see the following resources:The ABCs of Liability WaiversUnderstanding Liability WaiversAre Waiver/Releases Worth the Paper on Which They're Written? As others have posted, a signed waiver does not provide relief from:Defense costs:A signed waiver does not prevent someone from suing the sports league.Defense costs alone can run into many thousands of dollars. The threat of suit whether defensible by a waiver or not is reason enough to purchase coverageParties injured who have not signed a waiver:Sporting events draw spectators. Spectators include those who have not signed a waiver.Non-signing spouses. In some states, each parent would need to sign a minor’s waiver in order for the document to be enforceable for both parties. It might be interesting to note that insurance pricing for those states that enforce signed waivers would also be those where coverage is less expensive. In a jurisdiction where waivers hold little credence, the exposure is greater and therefore so also the premium.Sadler Sports & Recreation Insurance is a long time provider of sports league insurance including both liability and accident coverage. You can request a quote from Sadler online or ask for an agent near you to help in securing appropriate coverage. Thanks for the A2A
Can I play D1 college sports as a graduate student even though I am past the 5 year calendar mark since I enrolled in an undergraduate program but never even tried out for any sports?
Maybe. You can’t “just do it”.You would need an excellent reason for why you couldn’t use your four years of NCAA eligibility within the first five years of your college attendance. Then with that excellent reason, and supported by the athletic director of your current college, your College would petition the NCAA for a waiver for you. However, there are a lot of Club sports on college campuses and you can easily expend your time and energy playing club sports. My MIT men’s soccer team (graduate students) routinely beat the MIT varsity soccer team (granted that is D-3, but still).
