How do I know in which social class I am?

The definition of "class" that is perhaps most useful was proposed by sociologist Edward C. Banfield in his classic 1970 book The Unheavenly City (http://www.amazon.com/Unheavenly-City-Revisited-Edward-Banfield/dp/0881335290). It introduced the concept of "time horizon", as something quite separate from income, wealth, race, intelligence or other nominal indicators. This hypothesis, which has gained extensive traction in the years since, maintains that members of lower classes have a shorter temporal perspective than members of upper classes, and that this has profound implications for everything from the criminal justice system to charitable institutions.Under the time horizon theory, the lowest class, most dysfunctional person lives moment to moment with no thought of future consequences. Freebasing cocaine for a quick high, mugging an old lady for ready cash, eating temporarily satisfying but non-nutritious junk food are hallmarks of this immediate view of the world.Working class people, in contrast, look a bit farther down the road. They get up every day and go to work, deferring immediate gratification in order to get a weekly paycheck, some of which is set aside to pay the monthly rent.Climbing higher up the ladder, members of the middle class think in terms of years, not months. They have 20 year mortgages, their children work hard in high school to establish a record for college, which in turn is an investment of years that eventually pays off in a better career. Finally, members of the upper class think even longer term: not years or decades, but lifetimes. They are concerned with not only their children but their grandchildren, and perhaps even as-yet-unborn great-grandchildren. They engage in trust and estate planning, place enormous value on their family's name and reputation, and at the highest levels think about societal epochs and future generations, endowing universities and hospitals and libraries. What's fascinating about this construct is that it divorces mindset and culture from things like money and skin color.A few decades ago, a major housing project in New York City could only be economically viable if it received deep federal subsidies designed for the poorest people. Local residents in the surrounding community were dead set against it, because to them, "low income" = "low class".The innovative solution was to limit the project's housing applications to a group of people who met economic criteria for subsidies, but were also middle or upper class residents who would improve, rather than destroy the community. The result? Manhattan Plaza for the Performing Arts, in which occupancy was limited only to actors, musicians, composers, stagehands and other professionals in the arts, many of whom struggled to make even the barest of livings. As producer Mike Todd (Elizabeth Taylor's first husband) once said, "growing up, my family was often broke...but never poor." The experiment was a resounding success, and helped anchor the renaissance of New York' Times Square theater district. So, to determine your social class using this method, consider how far ahead you think, and how that impacts your current choices. Do you live paycheck to paycheck, spend your spare time passively watching tv and your spare dollars having drinks at the local pub?Or are you investing your time and money in preparing for a future career (graduate school, night classes, self teaching through voracious reading), considering every one of your actions in light of your long-term reputation, and thinking about the societal effects of your actions (going green, volunteering for charitable activities, voting in every election)?None of these are dispositive, of course, but honest answers to them may give you pause for thought, regardless of how much money is in your checking account or who your parents were.

What are the logically best strategies to organize your application classes?

Hi,You split classes in packages to reflect the Architecture of choice, for example a 3 tier architecture for an e-comerce:Business model has:Account: Responsible for creating, updating, removing users;Cart: Responsible for tracking cart/buy later items.Catalog: Responsible for listing, creating, updating, removing items.Reports: Responsible for showing relevant reports such as sales per item, etc.Invoices: Responsible for managing all shopping invoices.3 tier architecture:Presentation: Contains controller, view objects.Services: Contains objects to support business, such as business rules, data retrieval, etc.DAO: Contains data access objects (from what ever the source DB, file, etc)Model objects is the data that will be shared among tier.So I suggest follow the Business Model + Tier package naming convention.Example:com.ecomerce.account.controller.CreateControllercom.ecomerce.account.controller.UpdateControllercom.ecomerce.account.controller.RemoveControllercom.ecomerce.account.controller.SessionControllercom.ecomerce.account.services.AccountServicescom.ecomerce.account.dao.AccountDAOcom.ecomerce.account.model.Accountcom.ecomerce.cart.controller.ListCartControllercom.ecomerce.cart.controller.UpdateCartControllercom.ecomerce.cart.controller.CartControllercom.ecomerce.cart.services.CartServicescom.ecomerce.cart.dao.CartDAOcom.ecomerce.cart.model.CartSo if you notice, if you ask someone new to add a new Service for Accounts he will waste no time looking at your whole application, it will look for account then services. Also whatever pattern you follow, keep it as standard.Best Regards,

What would you do if you saw your colleague carrying a gun (either on their person or in a bag) in the office?

Going anonymous for obvious reasons. I work at a bank. I’m also a police officer and a firearm instructor. I’ve taught a couple of my co-workers in my handgun classes for their handgun license, and I’m always the go to person when anyone has firearm related questions. With that said, our bank has a no weapon policy for employees (this obviously and explicitly includes firearms). However, there is an exception to this policy, law enforcement and sercurity officers are excluded… So technically I’m allowed (and by policy the only one allowed at all the branches) to carry a firearm. Now to get to my story…There are two girls who work at my branch who have taken my class and gotten their handgun licenses (allows them to carry, just not in the building). By the way one of the girls talks, she always has a pistol in her purse which stays in a drawer right by her chair. The other girl has never said anything as to express that she carries. I do know she’s mentioned before it stays in her car (this would follow policy). So this girl who leaves it in her car, had gone through a nasty divorce a couple of years back, and her ex has gone down hill as time goes on. He has threatened her, had other people threaten her, she got re-married and they have threatened her new husband… just a real sicko. One day at her son’s football practice, her ex shows up at the field with one of his friends. Now this friend is not a normal sized guy. He is at least 6 foot 4 and weighs well over 250 solid! He smells of alcohol, as does her ex. The friend gets in her car, and leans over to her. He whispers in her ear, “now I know you won’t do anything to upset us right? Because if you do, I’m gonna whoop your husband’s ass”. He then kisses her on her cheek, and laughs as he exits the car.Fast forward a year or so and this friend shows up st the bank. This girl works in the loan department and he comes in to… you guessed it… apply for a loan. She gives him an application, not knowing how to react (unfortunately I wasn’t there at the time or I would have dealt with him, I also work in the loan department). He takes the application and leaves. When I come back from lunch, she tells me about the incident. I told her to not deal with him, that he will be my customer, and I will deal with him (I would find a reason to deny him because I will not do business with him). Oh ya, I forgot to add, we looked this guy up, and he has a history or protective orders filed against gun, he used to play football in the NFL, has a history with drugs, and a history of prostituting women and beating them.So this girl is fearful he will come back, or her husband will come back and do something stupid. So a couple of weeks after this, I am needing a check from our chattel account (she keeps the checkbook in her drawer during business hours) so I go to her office and open the drawer. I see laying on the checkbook a familiar pistol. It was the Smith and Wesson shield she qualified with while taking my ccl class. I, without a hiccup, reach in, grab the checkbook, proceed to write the check I needed, and place the pistol right back on the checkbook where I found it.I later needed something else from a notebook kept in the same drawer (this time she was in her office) so I go and sit across from her desk asking for the notebook, letting her reach in and getting it out (the drawer was in a way you couldn’t see inside of it unless you were behind her desk).I asked how long she had kept her pistol in that drawer, and she looks up at me in shock. She tells me she started carrying it ever since the individual came in the bank. She’s afraid he was scoping it out. I told her not to worry, continue carrying, her secret was safe with me… but if he did decide to be stupid and come in the bank to cause harm, I would be right along with her shooting back at him. I remind her I am always carrying and she isn’t in this alone. So what would I do if I noticed a colleague was carrying? I’d encourage them to continue to do so.
