PDF Editor FAQ

Were you ever about to hire someone until they said or did something that immediately disqualified them?

Wasn’t quite ready to hire him, but here’s the full story.About 40 years ago my job included responsibilities for hiring in our actuarial department at Aetna Life & Casualty. We typically only hired fresh college graduates, who then worked as “actuarial students” as they progressed through their actuarial exams.I got a call from a headhunter (a job recruiter) who told me he had an excellent candidate whom I should bring in for an interview: Don, from NYC, who had about 5 years of experience and had passed more than half of the (10) actuarial exams. I explained that we generally didn’t hire experienced candidates; the recruiter explained that he knew that we didn’t but thought we should give Don a shot because his major, long-term career goal had always been to work at Aetna. I asked why Don was so interested in Aetna and the headhunter said I would really need to find out directly from Don. Out of curiosity, as well as a reluctance to deny a job interview to someone so eager to work at Aetna, I relented, and we arranged for Don to come to Hartford, CT for an interview. When Don sat down to talk with me a few weeks later, my first question was to ask him why he had always wanted to work at Aetna. He looked a bit puzzled, and said he hadn’t wanted to work at Aetna, and in fact did not want to move from NYC; he said the only reason he had accepted the job interview was that he was very curious to know why Aetna was so intent on hiring him! After Don and I had had a good laugh over the realization that we had been “played” by this unethical recruiter, we had an amiable conversation and he returned to NYC. Over the years we ocassionally bumped into each other at actuarial conferences and always enjoyed chuckling over this incident.UPDATE in answer to several questions. Yes, this recruiter was a complete jerk, and operated on his own. After this incident I called him and chewed him out for wasting my time and Don’s. I cut myself off from dealing with him after that although I recall that he once sent me, by mistake, some “recruiting notes” (including salary information) that he had compiled on Jim, a co-worker and friend of mine; he then called me to tell me he had misdirected his mailing and told me not to tell Jim about it. Of course I did tell Jim, and I’m sure that ended their relationship. I think this headhunter got out of the business before long.

What's the shadiest tactic you've witnessed HR use at your job?

A 60,000 employee strong company laying off workers who cost too much for our health insurance, waiting a month or so, then hiring someone younger and healthier. HR was on board all the way with this.OK, so I was working for a large IT company in South Carolina. This company is so large, they found they could self insure for health insurance and make money off of the employees by contracting out to Aetna, BlueCross and others to provide health insurance, but they would pay the bills from the monthly payments we employees made. So, we had several employees with significant medical issues. One had been in a motorcycle accident and lost limbs. I heard she was laid off , with collusion of the Government manager, because she was out too much and cost too much for medical. They waited a month, found they needed to “fill” this position again, got a new, younger, healthier employee.Next, I was told that one of our employees was taking too much medical leave, had justification from his doctor, and medical expenses with no end in sight. The plan was that I would replace this employee for the Government because they “needed” a programmer instead of his bookkeeping role. Once he was let go, I would work there a month, and then they the would advertise for his position to refill it.Well, I had a frank talk with the Government contact, she became so disgusted with it all that when we let the guy go, she eliminated the position totally, not wanting to work with us at all.All of this was against policy and law and I had gone to HR to complain. Was escorted out of the building. Probably the best thing to happen to me, even though I had worked for them for 11 years. The icing on the cake for me was when my son was diagnosed with Autism, the company went back 6 months worth of medical for him and reversed most of the treatment, because they reasoned he would never get better. Dogs. This is common practice in the larger companies.
