PDF Editor FAQ

I will be on vacation in Andaman & Nicobar Islands for seven days, so how do I plan this to experience scuba diving, snorkeling and other watersports, hiking, scenic beaches, and an evening with a fancy dinner and cocktails?

My Exploratory Trip To Andamans IslandsIt was May 2018 and we were feeling bored with summer heat, so we decided for a vacation in June. But the question came where would it be a nice getaway in the monsoon of June. After a lot of analysis, we decided for Andaman. It was one of my dream destinations within India. To begin with I read some travelogues and sites whether it is safe to travel to Andaman in June. The Experience Andamans (http://www.experienceandamans.com/) had the most detailed and honest description about every place/activity/facility in Andamans. Anyone who is planning the trip, I would request to read about all the places & activities you will be experiencing while travelling. There were mixed opinions about travelling to andaman in June but we decided to move ahead & it was totally worth it because of less tourist and pleasant weather. Then came the planning & booking phase. After gathering more information on the island, I chose to prepare my own itinerary & make all the necessary reservations instead of buying a travel package.Flight tickets: Chennai –Port Blair – Chennai (9th June 2018 – 16th June 2018)Port Blair - Hotel Mainak (2 nights)Havelock - Havelock Island Beach Resort (2 nights)Neil Island – Summer Sand Beach Resort (1 Night)Port Blair – Islander Inn (2 Nights)Ferry from Port Blair – Havelock – Neil – Port Blair : Makruzz (booking link - http://live.makruzz.com/online_user_booking ) - try to book well in advance to get back seats & window seats. And also, the morning ships get full very soon.Baratang day tour – Monika Tours and TravelsAll local travelling was done by auto (very nominal charges) or cabs. At Havelock (Rs 400) & Neil (Rs 500) got scooty which is very easily available.Note – 1.5 litre oil would be enough for Scooty @ Havelock for entire travelling & 1 Litre for Neil travelling. Just FYI, oil prices are cheaper at these islands than that of Mumbai.Important information – There would be no mobile internet availability in the Union territory. Mobile networks also is limited – it works for airtel & bsnl. Rest I don’t know. The complimentary wifi at hotels & resorts are so slow that is painful to use. So make sure you save all the information offline for convenience. I had saved the entire site of Experience Andamans, google map of the Islands and Port Blair city & other important pages for offline browsing.Day 1 (Saturday) – Arrival to Port BlairWe reached Port Blair airport from Chennai at around 4 pm (flight was delayed by an hour). Make sure you book a window seat to get a glimpse of the mesmerizing view of the islands & blue waters from the flight itself. The hotel we had booked our stay provided complimentary airport pickup and drop. So the driver was already waiting for us. It took 15-20 minutes to reach the hotel The Mainak. So at Port Blair you may not find very fancy hotels, but then you will not have to spend much time in the room, so an average neat and clean room & bathroom & basic necessities solves the purpose. This was same, but was quite interior so during early morning rides we had to book cabs, rest commuting was done by auto. The staff and room service was also good. We could not have their complimentary breakfast as we left before 7 am on both the days instead we got packed breakfast. Our Day 2 was to visit the Baratang Island limestone caves & Mud Volcano. Since I had already read that we will have to leave around 4 am next day so, bookings had to be made today only.We first enquired about the trip from the hotel. They said it would cost around 4500 only for vehicle. It would have been a costly affair for 2 travelers.Hence, we enquired about group tours from Experience Andaman representative. They connected us with Monika tours and travels. They charged 1800 per person which included bus & ferry ride to Baratang, speed boats to the caves, vehicle to the Mud Island & delicious breakfast and lunch. So it seemed totally value for money and booked it. We also booked a car for the early morning pickup from hotel to Bus Stop which cost around Rs 300.So continuing our Day 1 trip. A typical day 1 itinerary would include visit to Carbyn’s cove beach and then the sound and light show event. But we had ‘other’ plans for Carbyn’s beach on Day 8 so we skipped that for now. We freshened up ourselves and started for Cellular Jail. Autos are very easily available in the city at a very decent rates. (Cheaper than many metro cities). Got the tickets for 7:30 Sound & Light show. We had 1 hour to spend waiting. So we went to the Water Sports Complex (Walkable from Cellular Jail). Walked in the complex, and enjoyed the cool breezy wind by the sea shore. It wasn’t crowded owing to the off season. Then headed back to the Cellular Jail. The show was little filmy but informative.Post the show, we had dinner in the nearbuy food court – Bharkath Food Court. And then took auto for the hotel. Food was good but a bit expensive. Later we realized the on an average food is expensive on the islandWe requested for a packed breakfast from the hotel for our visit to Baratang next day and signed off for the day.Day 2 – Day trip to BaratangSo we were ready at around 3:15 AM as we had a scheduled pickup for the Bus. The breakfast was packed (It was raw slices of bread, Frooty, Snacks and water). We reached the Gandhi statue bus stop. We had good tea there from the stalls. Bus came within 15 minutes, picked us up and we started heading towards Baratang. So Journey to Baratang Island was another enriching experience. Some parts of the road were bumpy though. Since it was early morning most of the people in bus dozed off. I remained awake mostly to catch nature views of this amazing island. On the way you can get to check the villages & lifestyle of Andaman people. We reached the checkpost around 5:15 am. There are public washrooms & small tea – snacks stalls. Prepared ourselves for the next 2 hrs 40 minutes as we were entering the Jarwa tribes reserved forest area. As the tour operator explained that the vehicle cannot stop in the reserved forest area for about a stretch of 50 Km before we reach the Baratang check post. I was munching some snacks in the bus, and the operator even told me that we should not even eat in the bus in this area as “tribals would snatch” my food. I don’t know why he said that though. This part of the forest journey midst of lush greenery was amazing. Due to the monsoon season, the beauty was incomparable to anything I had experienced ever. Everyone was very excited to spot tribals to get a glimpse of lifestyle of humans still living in forests. But sadly we could not find in the entire passage. I even tried to be awake for most part of it.After reaching the Baratang checkpost, we boarded a Govt. ferry and it took 15 – 20 mins to reach the island. There was a tourist waiting hall, refreshed ourselves for about 15-20 minutes then we proceeded to take the speed boat. The ride by the speed boat in the dense mangroves forest was a cherish able experience. The complimentary breakfast (Poori Bhujiya - delicious) was provided in the speed boat ride. Then after getting down from the boat, we had to trek for around 15-20 minutes and then reach the limestone caves. Such natural beauty is always stunning to view. There were people selling lemonades as well – so people tired of walking can refresh themselves. After 2 hours of the visit we headed back to the waiting hall. Then we went to see the mud volcano in jeeps. We could see streams of mud rising from the ground from multiple points. One can read about these on boards put there. After an hour we reached back to the waiting hall. Lunch (delicious) was already booked in the canteen above the waiting hall. After resting for about an hour, we started our journey back to port blair at around 2:15 pm (The Baratang check post opens at 3 pm). We were glad to encounter a couple of Jarawa Tribe carrying bows and arrows. Also later some of the tribal kids were playing around the road. We reached Abardeen Bazar at around 7 Pm. We reached back to hotel by auto from our drop location, ordered dinner in the room and slept.Day 3 – Havelock Island visitWe had already spent 2 days in Andamans and not touched sea water yet. So we were craving to get into some real beachy experience. We checked out of hotel around 6 am – the hotel arranged for the transportation at 300 Rs to Jetty. There was a large waiting hall with a snacks & beverages counter. The process of luggage scan, check-in and getting into the ship was streamlined. The ride by the ship to Havelock was smooth but the inside temperature was chilling (do keep a shawl or summer jackets with you). The passengers were hustling and bustling in the vessel. The excitement to visit one of the most beautiful places on earth was visible in every passenger’s eyes. The glimpse of the island was mesmerizing. Our resort – Havelock Island Beach Resort had a complementary pick up & drop to Jetty. We reached the resort, but the rooms were still being cleaned (Can’t blame the hotel service for this – people leave and come by the same vessel and resort is located at a 10 min ride distance. So gap in between is less to get rooms ready). We knew we had to wait for another hour before the room is assigned so we started exploring the resort itself. The private beach area was very beautiful – a nice trailer to what we had to experience in the next 3 days. After room allotment, we rested for a while, got a Scooty from a nearbuy vendor (2 min walking distance from resort)(Info – Do not ask the resorts to book a scooty, they charge exorbitant prices uselessly. We had first enquired about it from reception and he had quoted double price than what we actually paid for to the outside vendor). So we were all set for the next two days at Havelock.Havelock Island Beach Resort – the rooms & bathroom were spacious, staff was gentle and friendly. The private beach area was the best part of the stay. Breakfast was also good. Pool was not clean & unusable. There were cute kittens residing.Since elephant’s beach is closed during monsoon, the Govind Nagar beach itself was used for all water activities. The resort was also located on the Govind Nagar Beach. So in the private beach area itself we met vendors who were managing snorkeling activities. We booked snorkeling with them which costs us 2500 for 2 people. (negotiation was required). We enjoyed our first stint inside the sea. The beauty beneath is spell bounding, so Scuba was next on the list. The snorkeling organizer also said he can arrange the Scuba as well. So for Scuba, the earlier you do, clearer you get to see. I am very glad that the rates of fun dive scuba is fixed (Rs 4000 for 7am – 8am slot & Rs 3500 post 8am.) across Andamans. Only if you want to go for a certification dive, then different groups have different rates as per the dive time & facilities. So we decided to do Scuba next day morning, since we were staying at Havelock for next day as well. After freshening up after snorkeling, we went out had some lunch in nearby hotel. Then we headed to RadhaNagar beach. It is Asia’s No. 1 beach and ranks among top 10 in the world. It was indeed a fascinating experience. The beach is truly the best one for swimming and enjoying wavy waters. Pure white sand. No stones and pebbles will get in the feet so no hurting. We wanted to spend 2-3 hours there in the water. But security officials asked everyone to be out of water at 5 pm. We were a bit disappointed on that. We clicked photos & the sunset by the beach was looking fabulous. So we got back to the hotel, freshened up and rested. Our resort also arranged for a candlelight dinner in the private beach area. So we enquired about that too, and booked it for next day dinner. We ordered dinner in room and then spent some time on the beach and then signed off for the day.Day 4 – Havelock IslandThe morning was equally beautiful. Mixture of cool breeze & sea waves & rising sun is not a thing you should miss on your Andaman trip.Next we prepared ourselves for the most exciting activity we were looking forward since long. It was our first dive of our lives, we had enrolled for the Fun dive which included 15 min informational video, 15 min in water training & 30 Min dive with a specialist. In the entire exercise, you only have to take care of your underwater breathing, rest is taken care by the specialist. We were also carrying our Go Pro (camera which can be used underwater) to capture the beauty we were to see although the service provider will give some photographs and video. We were a little scared, but everything went well and it was indeed one of the best activity to do in our lifetime. After Scuba, we freshened ourselves, had breakfast and rested for a while. Then we headed to KalaPathar beach. This beach had its own uniqueness. With blue & green waters across, it’s known for best photography location. After spending some time there capturing beauty with our eyes and saving it in camera, we headed towards Radhanagar beach well in advance to spend 2-3 hours inside the water. It was really amazing experience & saw the sun set again.Post this, we had our candle light dinner arranged by the resort. The food served was good & having a lovely dinner by the beach is another exciting activity at least for couples. The only problem was they were playing non-romantic songs for the other people and candle light dinner on those music seemed inappropriate.Again another beautiful day of our trip passed.Day 5 – Havelock to Neil Island in morningWe had our ship for Neil Island at around 10 AM. So after breakfast we checked out of the resort for our next heavenly destination – Neil Island. This time the ride was not as smooth as the previous one. Many passengers were feeling nauseated & uncomfortable with sea sickness. So quick tip – prefer to book back seats in the ship & esp. ladies who are very prone to such travelling sickness can arrange for medicines apriori.By God’s grace we both went through this without being sick. After getting out, we were negotiating with an auto to drop to our resort – Summer Sands Beach Resort. He said instead he can provide a scooty and we can return it next day when we board our ship. This seemed to be the best option. Unlike Havelock, we found that there was nothing near the resort areas – thank god we made the decision to take scooty at Jetty itself.Summer Sands Beach Resort – The resort itself did not have any private beach, though it had a large pool. The area was huge. Staff was good & Food was also delicious It had multiple options in both Breakfast & Dinner time.So after check-in and a little rest at the resort we started exploring Neil. We first went to Bharatpur Beach for enquiry on activities. So, every sports activity was also available here which we had done in Havelock. Additionally, I was interested in the Glass Bottom Boat ride. We had our ship booked for the next day in the evening around 3 pm. So the first half day was reserved for the activities here at Bharatpur. We then drove to Laxmanpur 2 beach to visit the Natural Rock formation. This place can be visited during low tide & you need to take a guide on this place. He will show you some unseen sea creatures and provide information about them. Thanks to our GoPro Hero 5 which can be safely used in water, we were able to capture them. The beach was mostly rocky with dead corals around.Next we went to Laxmanpur 1 beach. This one is known for its beautiful sunset point. I guess we reached there early – no one else was seen there except a snacks & Tea shop. Since we were already hungry and tired, we ordered Tea & Onion pakoda – both were very good. It also rained for 15-20 minutes making the weather pleasant after scorching heat. We sat by the sand experience the cool wind & watched the water rise back - Also collected beautifully shaped corals on the beach. We created a beautiful heart sand. We noticed later that people were taking pictures of our creation. After having viewed the glamourous sunset at the beach, we reached back to the resort. The resort had a beautiful pool, so we decided to enjoy in the pool with some ordered snacks. We had booked dinner buffet as well in the resort itself. Dinner also had multiple options and food was good.Day 6 – Complete Neil Island & return to Port Blair in eveningThe day started at 4:30 am. We had to visit sitapur beach for catching the sun rise view. It as a 10 min drive from the resort. No one else was seen there except a tea vendor. Only a couple of people joined later from the nearby resorts. But it was a beautiful view indeed. We spent around half an hour at the beach and returned. Later after checking out of the hotel, we reached bharatpur beach as planned. First we did a Glass bottom boat ride. It was a very enthralling experience & very different from Scuba. After so much water activities, I somehow started to feel attached by the sea creatures and the beautiful corals. After the glass bottom boat, we decided to do snorkeling again, and it was a different experience than the previous snorkeling, although both were good. My husband also did the Jet skiing. After all the activities we had some snacks and went back to collect our luggage from the resort. We came back to the Jetty, returned the scooty and boarded our ship. Imp info here – sometimes Makruzz changes the ship timings so it is better to confirm the timings at least a day before. Our ship was preponed by half an hour, but luckily we reached on time – last ones to give our luggage. Now this journey to Port Blair was a complete roller coaster one. I had finally managed to get a window seat on this booking to spot some dolphins on the way. Since it was evening ship, it wasn’t fully occupied, they had asked us to sit in the back seats only and avoid front ones irrespective of the bookings. The ride was quite turbulent one & I forgot everything about dolphin spotting. I would advise to never have a heavy meal before the ship ride & carry medicines if needed. They announced that it’s a normal thing and will subside soon.So we safely reached Port Blair, and checked-In our hotel at Islander Inn rested there for a while.Islander Inn – Again, as mentioned in Port Blair hotels were just there to solve the purpose. This was also similar, but its location was perfect – walking distance from many places you have to visit. But there was no complimentary breakfast. There was a restaurant beneath the hotel, but service was too slow there. This hotel is walking distance from the water sports complex, so we walked there to spend some time. On our way back to hotel we had dinner.Day 7 – Port Blair sightseeing & city explorationThis day was scheduled for a trip to North Bay & Ross Island. We had already researched that speed boats would be available at Aberdeen Jetty. So we reached the Jetty at around 8 Am. But we found that Govt. had ordered to cancel the ferries due to cyclone alerts. We were a bit disappointed because my husband wanted to go to North Bay to see the spot from where the picture on 20 Rs note was taken. So after thinking we decided to visit places in Port Blair. So we started with the Cellular Jail. We spent around 1 hour there. Then we planned to move to Chattam Saw Mill & cover a couple of museums post that. But the auto driver we were riding with informed us that we can go to Mount Hariett from Chattam Jetty & vehicles from Bamboo Flat would take us to the location of the picture we wanted to see. This part of the trip was actually exploratory. We had no idea about wat was that side. We enquired a couple of passengers on the Jetty weather we will be able to return to this side of the Jetty safely in time (Since it was monsoon we were a bit scared). So we finally purchased tickets from counter thinking that in worst case we would be wasting ferry fare of 10 Rs per side in case nothing was found on the other side. Gladly after reaching Bamboo Flat Jeeps were available in queue. We booked a Jeep for 500 Rs & it included a 2 hour company. He showed us Tsunami affected areas & Location of the photograph taken for Rs 20 and the Mount Hariett peak.In all, the day was fruitful. We had ample time to cover Sagarika Museum. They have great collection of marine life, beautiful corals & some artefacts about the tribal in Andaman & Nicobar. We spent 2 hours at the Museum and walked back to our hotel. On our way back, we were feeling hungry & spotted local snacks vendors. We got samosa chaat and pani poori – they were amazingly spicy & tasty. We rested for 2-3 hours in the hotel. And realizing that it's our last night on the island & should not be wasted by staying in the hotel. We walked to the water sports complex and spent some peaceful time at the seashore. We had dinner on our way back to the hotel.Day 8 – Return daySo today was the final day & we had our return flights at around 3 pm. So I had reserved this day for Carbyn’s Cove beach visit and a professional photography session by Snapbyte there in the first half. It was raining heavily in the morning. Somehow we managed to reach the beach by auto in between the rain showers. After reaching it again rained for continuous 2 hours and we felt that we will have to probably cancel the session due to incessant rainfall. But luckily it stopped completely and the photographers we had already booked reached there. We were successfully able to complete the session although I did not like the quality of photos much because of cloudy weather (No fault of the photographer). Although, with help of image editing tools I was able to make the photos look more charming. We headed back to the hotel, had breakfast in the restaurant within the hotel campus. We left straight to the airport and waited there for 2 hours for our flight. We carried with us our most charismatic experiences with the nature at Andaman. And this is how our lovely trip came to an end.Things to carrySunscreen cream & lotionComfortable shoesSwim suitsSome snacksGo Pro (optional) or any camera which can be used underwaterMedicines to prevent vomiting if needed – during ship commute.UmbrellaOverall ExperienceIt was one of the most wonderful experiences of travelling to Andaman. I found worth in every penny I had spent. Not a single point in our trip I had to regret about planning the trip in monsoon. Although we missed Elephant’s beach & Ross Island, but still we covered all the activities which were planned. Rainfall occurred only for very short intervals 10- 12 minutes which made the weather more pleasing. Only on my returning day in Port Blair it rained heavily and continuously, though somehow we managed to get that activity completed. The most distinguishing factor I observed at the Island as compared to any other tourist place is the humility in people. Unlike other places, people here talk with concern and care & not over exaggerate prices of everything in the name of tourism. I guess this unique quality cannot be described here, but will definitely be experienced by you.To-dos still leftAndaman is a place which deserves 2 full weeks for a justified trip. We still have North Andaman to explore. Places like Ross Island, Jolly Bouy island and other places in the southern part of the city is still inexperienced by us. The Andamans’ trip was so amazing, and there is so much more to discover even after 8 days trip that somewhere in my life goals it has added itself to be revisited again in future. Honestly we have fallen in love with the place. It is indeed a paradise on earth.I would be more than willing to assist anyone who wants planning help.Edit 1: Detailed Description of my recent trip to Turkey & Greece Swati Arya's answer to How do I plan my 10-day trip to Istanbul, Turkey and Athens, Greece? Which institute should I join for the CAT preparation? Did they join the conventional ones (TIME, IMS, CL) or the Tathagat/Alchemist?

Conventional or unconventional, the best coaching institute is the one that suits your personal requirements. So, first explore yourself. Find out what is your goal. Find out what is your dream. Retrospect and identify what works best for you. And establish as a premise, what is it that you need to realize your dream. To add some colour to these pointers, I would urge you to ask yourself the following: Are you self-motivated, and/or need external push? Do you need strict deadlines and/or small incremental goals? Do you need a disciplined schedule? Do you need more help in verbal ability? Do complicated grammar rules scare you? Are quant formulas your worst enemy? Do you need vast question banks? Do you need on-demand contact hours with teachers? Do you need more than just access to infinite resources: flash cards, notes, assignments, questions, tests, list of readings, formulae list and what not? And the all the plenty of other questions that pop up in your head. When I was asking myself all these questions, I found the perfect institute for myself in Tathagat Institute, Delhi. And I believe, the way their entire program is designed, it’s the most perfectly suitable institute for almost all kinds of students and CAT aspirants. When you are searching for an institute, don’t just look out for what all they offer. Look from the lens of “differentiating factors”. I researched almost all major institutes in Delhi and spent nearly an 2 hours on average at their counselling stations. They all bombarded me with their entire program calendar. They all had an array of booths meant solely for this purpose. They talked about their thick course packs. They talked about class-contact hours. They talked about test series. Scholarships, discounts and fee installments. And after all this I was only dizzy with information overload. And finally my last visit was to Tathagat, on the recommendations from a few friends. There was no array of counselling stations bombarding me with information. There were a few students attending an impromptu doubt session on a weekday. The receptionist directed me to a teacher. And in the next 45 minutes, I had a tête-à-tête with him.He asked me why I wanted to pursue an MBA. He urged me to ask him questions about anything at all. And through this journey of exploration I ended up discovering all there was to know about CAT and this institute. My decision was made then and there. For me this was a window-seat view into how the sessions at Tathagat would unfold. With a small batch size, the attention on every student was higher and more customized. Class discussions always led you into discovery of new approaches to every subject, topic, or problem. Had it been a teacher telling me this is what you should do, I would have made some notes and learnt a lesson. But instead it was a teacher enabling me to find for myself what I should do, and then discussing with me faster and improved ways to approach the problem. So instead, I understood the lesson, and I challenged my own progress to get better each day. Their strict deadlines and schedules disciplined me and motivated me to work hard outside the classroom as well. Week after week, I was reading more, learning more, making more mistakes, and understanding everything thoroughly. While other institutes handed out flash cards to their students, I had to make my own flash cards from the words I had come across in my weekly readings. And then drown myself into these cards for the rest of the month. Some 8 months before the CAT exam, I started attending 8-hour long full day workshops and 4-hour long mini workshops every alternate weekend, to sit single-mindedly for every topic out there, in addition to regular sessions. So while tests snatch away the experimentation, these workshops gave me full freedom to make mistakes and understand the lessons thoroughly enough to not repeat those mistakes. The mini test series set the yardstick of tracking personal progress. And finally the major test series put me in practice of sitting for long tests and handle the pressure therein. And of course, to further gauge my progress.Tathagat called itself our coach, and not a coaching institute. For anyone who has ever trained in a sport, this difference means the world. In any session, any test, any workshop or quiz, I never felt too pressurized. I was only motivated to work harder, and improve my performance to achieve incremental goals. In every hour spent working on assignments at home, and in every minute spent reading something new during the daily metro travel, I always felt supported by the teachers at the institute. I could attend any module I had problems in. I could schedule a doubt session for any topic any number of times. And I could still drop by their centre any day, for any kind of help, advice or support.I’m not writing this to compare TG (as we fondly call Tathagat. It stands for Total Gadha!) with any other institutes. I only experienced their counselling stations. But I am writing this to help you see the wide range of possibilities for any institute to go beyond their basic purpose. My experience there brought about an immense improvement in my personality and intellect. And I till date cherish the academic and life lessons I learnt there. TG gave me an education for a lifetime, and that is the best you can hope from any institute you join.So I wish you all the very best in your journey. And I hope I could add some perspective to your research into coaching institutes for your CAT prep.Go find the best coach that suits you!Perspective: I received my education at Tathagat Insitute, Connaught Place, Delhi. Wrote the CAT 2015 exam. Scored 98.32 percentile, overall. Happily enrolled at MDI Gurgaon in their PGPM course, straight out of engineering.TathaGat (TG)http://www.totalgadha.com/
