M1 Tanks Tracks series tracks are more tougher than past US Tanks Generations.. but they are fragile like any other type Tanks. Direct fire can damage it or any type of explosions etc..…now tracks for the M1 Tanks series are three types T156, T158 and the T158LL each one has been designed for better rapid repair by the crew. here are different types of tracks can be mounted on M1 Tank series.T156 is the old TrackThe T156 track pad has a non-removable intergraded rubber pad as shown in and is the lightest of the three models but has very low track life of about 700 to 800 miles.T-158The T158 system consists of forged steel links with replaceable rubber pads that are bonded and bolted to both sides of the steel link. The T158 adds more weight to the tank but has a longer life than T156.T-158LLThe T158LL utilizes the exact same track pads as the T158 and is an attempt to reduce the weight of the T158. The T158LL can be distinguished from the older T158 by looking at the center guides. The center guides on the T158LL are hollow at the center as opposed to a webbed design in the T158.The track pads of a tank consists of a homogenous rubber pad bonded to a steel backing plate. In a general sense the pad carries out functions similar to those of a pneumatic tire used on off-road highway equipment. The pad is designed to provide traction and must support the weight of the vehicle, so the pad’s surface is subjected to both shear and compressive loadings. In addition track pads are considered a peacetime 4 necessity and protect existing road surfaces as the tank passes over them. Track pads also serve as a sound deadening device.Now this the dead track for the M1 tank.. dead track is call because has no rubber for pads. can be use in very Ice condition. because rubber tracks provide no traction.Ice Cleat DescriptionThe ice cleat weighs approximately 8 pounds and has a footprint of 6" x 7" and a height of 2 ". It is bolted to the track shoe using the same mounting system used for the rubber pads.The current ice cleat design calls for a heat-treated forging made from 4140 or 4340 steel alloy for high strength and toughness to survive road abrasion and impact at sub-zero temperatures.The finished cleat requires dimensional tolerances on the order of 0.06" to fit snuggly into the track shoe.Also tracks for the M1 Tanks series are design to distribute heat and keep it cool. Im a Master Gunner for all the M1’s Tank series.. no guided rounds!!However it is one particular round The XM943 that is Smart STAFF is a 120mm round that searches out and destroys enemy armor at distances beyond the reach of conventional munitions. As a top-attack smart munition, STAFF destroys enemy armor by flying over it and firing a highly lethal explosively formed penetrator down into its lightly armored top. No enemy armor is safe from STAFF -- whether it's moving, at long range, or in defilade. Although STAFF is primarily designed as an anti-armor round, it complements the M830A1 (HEAT) tank round by being highly lethal against helicopters. STAFF is unique among antiarmor munitions because of its large sensor footprint and the standoff capability of its explosively formed penetrator warhead.STAFF requires no change to the tank turret and no unique actions by the tank crew other than setting a single range zone switch. From aiming and firing to the last stages of its operation, STAFF functions much like a conventional round. During ballistic flight, STAFF establishes a vertical reference and orients itself with the ground. In the final seconds of flight, a search and track mode is initiated. The forward-scanning millimeter wave sensor a large footprint for target acquisition. The round flies over the target, rolls to align during flight because of a internal Gyro and fins will expand and stabilized the round in flight along with the sensor will scan and the warhead, fuzes, and then fires its lethal penetrador down into the most vulnerable area of the tank.
