Fat people eat accumulates.The old man the boat.The prime number few.The complex houses married and single soldiers and their families.These are all examples of garden path sentences, which are grammatically correct but initially lead the reader to a misinterpretation and therefore seem incorrect at first.You have to read them a couple of times before you realize they mean:The fat that people eat accumulates in their bodies.The elderly people control the boat.There are few prime people.Married and single soldiers reside with their families in the housing complex.

Volvo.1999: Ford buys Sweden’s Volvo for US$6.45bn. Sales of 400,000.Volvo tries to build luxury cars that try to be sexy, but never are. Sales rely on their image for safety.2009: Sales drop below 350,000. Geely, a maker of cheap cars in China, buys Volvo for US$1.8bn, a quarter of what Ford paid - Geely are the only bidder in the sale.Everyone thinks Geely will screw up.But by 2016 sales hit almost 550,000, with a target of 800,000 by 2020. Nothing against the law about buying anything at all in another state without a sales tax or a lower sales tax. However, technically speaking, if you follow the law exactly, you can’t “avoid” the sales tax of the state where you live. When you bring that item home, you’re supposed to pay your state’s sales tax on the item, subtracting the lower tax you already paid in the other state (if there was any). It’s called “use tax”. Now 90% of the people with transactions like this never end up paying it, and most of the time, states can’t really enforce it anyway. It’s also less of an issue these days anyway since so much out-of-state sales come from online purchases, and depending on the level of business the online companies you buy from do in your state, they usually have to charge your home state’s sales tax.The few instances where the states DO enforce this sort of law are when the purchases are large enough for them to notice it - former Tyco CEO Dennis Kozlowski was indicted on sales tax evasion for buying millions of dollars in paintings and avoiding $1 million or more in New York sales tax by having the paintings shipped to his company’s headquarters in New Hampshire (which has no sales tax) and then bringing them back to his Fifth Avenue penthouse in New York City, where there is an 8.875% sales tax. The paintings were going to be “used” in New York City, so that’s where he had to pay the sales tax and he should have just paid it when he bought the paintings. Because of the money involved and the fact he was a high-profile figure, the state made an example and indicted him for sales tax evasion, a crime where there is rarely an indictment.Also, don’t bother trying to save money on sales tax by buying a car in another state without a sales tax or a lower sales tax. To register and insure the car in your home state, the sales tax will need to be paid in full at your home state’s rate.
