The more you hate, the more you love.This oxymoronic phrase has gotten a scratch or two from my 10-year old self, much more so when I grew old.Can’t say I grew UP when I remained Filipino-sized now, right?Anyways, what could be so annoying, but yet, oh so covertly adorable?I’m a frustrated pediatrician.I love kids, especially the uber-cute dumplings with their rambunctious running, gleeful giggles and cutesy coos.So, in medschool, I set out to become the best future pediatrician I could be.Alas, when I got to my first Pediatrics rotation, I never thought that I would be in for the shock of my life.I was immediately assigned to the Neonatal ICU.It was quiet.Too quiet.Where are the baby dumplings?Where are their coos, cries and chiming laughter?They were all intubated, comatose, near-death and barely hanging on.All I heard were faint beeps, whooshing sounds of ventilators, and the faint mumbling of adult people.The mumbling, it turned out, were the prayers of distraught parents — begging for their little one to hold on and bounce back.Others were praying — “Ako na lang po kunin ninyo kaysa anak ko!” (Take me instead of my child!).Others were bargaining for a simpler wish.Just. One. More. Day.I came looking for a Cabbage Patch, or a Dumpling Den.It was only then did I realize that I standing in a morbidly-named “vegetable” garden.Why were these little angels born into suffering?I curled up into a ball and started bawling.I was a complete, utter mess.These kids were innocent.Why them?!As the tears ran down my haggard face, my senior resident saw me, picked me up and woke me up to the truth.Pediatrics is not a walk in the park, nor all sunshine and rainbows.She reassigned me to the wards and ER.There, I found crying children and babies.But they were alive and kicking. Responsive. When a medication gets FDA approval, it's after years and millions of dollars in testing. Once it's approved, it's given labeling regarding what it's been tested to treat and at what doses. Off- label prescribing means prescribing a Med to treat a condition it wasn't originally intended for. Only something like 25% of medicine prescribed to pediatrics is tested in kids first. And many life saving or prolonging meds are used off label.
