China has been making high tech chips for decades. How else did China successfully develop its nuclear Arsenal, space going rockets, satellites, combat planes and even supercomputers indigenously?China has Beidou, which uses China's own rubidium atomic clock design that is accurate to 1 second every 300 million years. That is femtosecond territory. The Beidou system is entirely Chinese in its architecture, design and hardware. Yes, Chinese chips. And very high tech. It is world class in performance and not a derivative design of glonass, gps or Galileo.China is capable of making sophisticated chips and software. But there is a caveat. China is not capable of making state of the art energy efficient chips or specialized upstream chips such as fpga and server chips. The Chinese chip industry also taps into the global toolmaking expertise for chips—from design, to manufacture, to testing and control. This enabling technology is being yanked from under the Chinese by America's liberal application of patent “rights”, and it is effectively a technology embargo to prevent legitimate Chinese competition from emerging.China will need a broad base strategy to go around this block but unlike a Finland, China's human capital isn't exhausted from creating a single Nokia. The Chinese are fantastic organizers and the gap will close in the coming decade.Please remember China is still a third world country that only completed its basic electric and highway grid in the 2000s.The world ain't seen nothing yet.
