Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 1771.Now this may not be as famous as Lockerbie, Tenerife or even 9/11. But this crash gives me chills every time I come across it.The flight was a routine scheduled flight from LA to SFO. The equipment used was a British Aerospace 146–200A four engine jet. Technically this wasn’t an accident, but a mass murder.David Burke who worked for the airline was terminated for a small theft. He pleaded mercy from his manager Raymond Thomson asking to be reinstated. Ray refused the plea and kept Burke fired. A frustrated Burke bought a ticket for flight 1771 in which he knew Ray Thomson would fly in as a passenger. This was way back in 1987 when flight and airport security was not what it is today. Burke smuggled a gun thru security and boarded flight 1771After take off, the 4 engine jet cruised at 22000 ft. Burke with full of rage waited for his time to strike. Although the exact sequence of events was never determined, it is documented that Burke had shot dead Ray Thomson, the two pilots and possibly a flight attendant. Once after that, Burke had pushed the yoke all the way forward pointing the nose down before he set all 4 engines to full power.The reason why I think this is the deadliest crash is because this was a controlled crash. Burke literally flew the airplane to the ground. Imagine an airplane flying nose straight down with 4 engines running at full power. It must have been absolutely terrible last few moments of their lives for the passengers.The plane is said to have crashed at a speed little higher than the speed of sound. The aircraft had disintegrated into multiple small pieces while also leaving a crater on the rocky hillside it crashed. The remains of the deceased were never identified. According to wiki the the aircraft experienced a deceleration of 5,000 times the force of gravity. Now, although it would have been a quick death, thinking about the sheer terror sends chills down the spineIt is also said Ray was given a note by Burke before he was shot. The note read‘Hey Ray. I think it's sort of ironical that we end up like this. I asked for some leniency for my family. Remember? Well, I got none and you'll get none’Retrospectively, I hope Ray had the time to tell Burke he would hire him back if he spares his life.Images: Google

This is the USS Cole:This is a better view of the hole in port side of the Cole:A small fiberglass boat, possibly looking like thiscarrying two suicide operators and carrying 400 to 700 pounds of explosive, possibly C4, caused that hole, killing 17 sailors and injuring 39.When commanders do not pay attention to their surroundings — and admittedly the Cole was in a safe port when this attack was carried out and had its guard down — small boats can cause a large amount of damage particularly when the operators don’t care about their survival.The US Navy learned the lesson of the attack on the USS Cole. Today, no boat comes within distance to do what was done to the Cole without getting a lot of attention.Could 10 Somali pirate boats successfully take on an Arleigh Burke destroyer. Yes, but it would take the cooperation of the Arleigh Burke captain and crew. As they remember what happened to the Cole, I doubt the Somali boats would be allowed to close to a distance where they could hurt an Arleigh Burke destroyer.

For the USN, not much.This is the only Cruiser the USN operates:The Ticonderoga Class cruiser. It is actually built on a Spruance Destroyer class hull:Here is the main Destroyer for the USN, the Arleigh Burke class:Note the fore-aft VLS cells, similar to the Tico.The short answer is the Ticonderoga class is a dead man walking. They are unlikely to survive another ten years of service. As more and more Burke’s come into service the Ticos are likely to be phased out in favor of “Flight III” Burkes.The really funny thing is this:That’s the Zumwalt “Destroyer.” In any other navy at any other time in history, that thing is a Cruiser. However, in the USN, it’s a Destroyer.For Comparison:Ticonderoga: 9,600 LTBurke (FLT I): 8.100 LTBurke (FLT III): 9.600 LTZumwalt: 15,000 LTSo, the Burke Flight III is the same size (displacement) as the Tico and the Zumwalt is much larger than either. But the Tico is a cruiser?It’s become essentially meaningless in the USN.EDIT: It was pointed out in a comment that Cruisers in the USN can host the air warfare commander, the “Alpha Whiskey” and thus Cruiser is a role rather than a tonnage. While this is certainly true, there will come a time when that role lives on a Burke. I don’t think that suddenly the Burke will become a Cruiser at that time.
