Mother brings her teenage son in.Me: “Good morning, Mrs. So and so.”Mother: “Doctor, Sonny is having chest pains.”Boy mumbles.“What kind of a pain is it? Is it sharp or dull. Is it throbbing?”Boy mumbles.“Ummm. I have chest pains.”Me: “All right. Take a seat on the exam table.”(Mom waits outside because Sonny prefers it that way.)He seats himself and opens up the robe to expose his chest.Very obviously, he has budding breast tissues around both nipples.I get it! He is worried about those breast tissues.So that is the most frequent lie I hear from teenage boy patients.They want you to look at their breasts. But they don’t want to say there is something the matter with their breasts.So they complain they have “chest pains.”Gynecomastia or breast development in adolescent males is a pretty common phenomenon because yes they also have a burst of estrogen production at that age.It is excruciatingly embarrassing for them.They want to talk to a doctor about it.They can’t say they have boobs.So they say they have chest pains.Then the doctor will look at their chest.And mom doesn’t need to know.

This isn't scary it's frightening!My sister had always been a very healthy woman. She didn't smoke, she didn't drink alcohol and she kept fit. So she started getting chest pains, put it down to exercising too much. So she stopped. Chest pains kept coming so she went to the doctors. They told her it was anxiety causing the chest pain and prescribed her anti anxiety meds. She had more pain and started to get dizzy. The doctors said it was a side effect from the anxiety meds. A few days later my sister said her arm felt painful, she was sweating and her breathing sounded weird. I called doctor for her, he came out and said it was anxiety again. When he left I said to my sister about going to er and then she gasped moaned and fell unconscious, I called an ambulance and had to do cpr.My sister died. She had a massage heart attack and plenty of warning signs which that doctor somehow missed. The worst medical negligence I've ever seen and it cost a life.

USA: My ex-wife had pain peeing. I was working in the US and had some sort of insurance. Took her to the ER or a walk-in clinic (this was 2001).“Did you guys know she was pregnant?”What? That’s awesome! Thank you for the news, we had no idea!“Also, she has a urinary tract infection. Let’s do a few tests”OK.A few days later we were congratulated with a lovely $1,500 bill in mail.Wait, we have insurance.“Yes, this is your share of the bill, after insurance.”What? The? F?Canada: My dad and I were watching a movie when I noticed his speech was slurring. He complained of chest pain. Fortunately, I live three minutes away from a hospital. I immediately put him in the car and took him to the ER.Triage Nurse: “What’s wrong?”Me: “My dad has had a heart attack before and is having chest pain”Five minutes later he had gotten blood thinners. They actually averted a heart attack — they called it a “heart episode”.He had all sort of tests the next day.The day after he was transferred to a bigger hospital for angioplasty. He spent a night there and a total of four days later he was home with a prescription for all sort of cholesterol and other medicines, including Humalog for his diabetes.Total out of pocket cost: $18 for parking at the hospital.Ridiculous, and arbitrary, health care cost in the US will surprise most of the world if they just knew.For diabetic patients, a vial of Humalog costs $30 in Canada that they don't even pay for because the insurance covers it. It costs $300 in the USA.
