You are correct in noting that Snape could very easily have messed up Remus Lupin’s Wolfsbane Potion.He could easily shrug it off as a misbrew due to extenuating circumstances or an unnoticed impurity in the ingredients. So long as Snape can lie to Dumbledore he’s unlikely to face major repercussions.Even if Remus were to get loose or became gradually more ill due to modified Wolfsbane Snape is unlikely to be held accountable. As Dumbledore can’t exactly Firecall someone from the Ministry to investigate without revealing that Remus is a werewolf.The main reasons I believe Snape never did such a thing were because he couldn’t be certain that Remus was working with Black. He only suspected him of it. (Hence why he didn’t add anything that could harm Remus while retaining the effects or otherwise incapacitating his werewolf form.) And even if he had what he thought of as solid proof the students safety was more important than manufacturing an excuse to have Remus dismissed. (Hence why he didn’t simply brew a version of the potion that was ineffective at keeping Remus in control.)You may disagree. But I don’t think Snape’s hatred of Remus was sufficient motivation to slip him harmful modifications of Wolfsbane. It is certainly enough to make Snape verbally unpleasant behind a thin veneer of civility. Regardless of whether Remus is being perfectly courteous or not. But I don’t believe Snape would go further than words unless the object of his loathing escalated matters. Even when it came to the Marauders.
