Okay, first things first. Who should they have voted for? In my county, we had four candidates on the ballot. Donald Trump (GOP), Joe Biden (Democrat), Jo Jorgensen (Libertarian) and Howie Hawkins (Green).So let's think about this. Jorgensen couldn't win. Hawkins couldn't win (and farmers would never support his agenda anyway). So, it was either Donald Trump or Joe Biden as who to cast your vote for.Tariffs destroyed whose livelihood? I'm betting you are thinking of soybeans. I don't know a single farmer who only grows soybeans. In 32 years of being actively involved in production agriculture, I have never put all my eggs in one basket. Farmers aren't dumb. We have very sharp pencils when it comes to seeing what's profitable and what's not. Price of soybeans looks bad? Shift to less beans. Maybe grow none. I know plenty of guys who HATE growing beans anyway. That would be Christmas coming early for them.My other bet is that you have heard, seen or read something that farmers are going broke, right? Which farmers? I can tell you right now, it's dairymen that are having the toughest time. Milk prices have been down for five, going on six years now. I talked to a guy up in Wisconsin, America's Dairyland, last night. Said he had thrown in the towel on milking. Talked to another in Pennsylvania about a week ago. Want to see a sad picture? See a snapshot of a barn full of Holsteins and then see it completely empty because the game is up and making money milking cows has left the building for the smaller dairymen. Trump wasn't even president when that started. And he can't jump down, turn around, stand on his head and convince the American people that they should reverse trend and consume more fluid milk, butter, cheese, sour cream etc. when that's been decreasing for years due to health concerns. He can't roll back time and stop dairymen from places like Ireland, England, and Holland coming to the US and building large dairies because land is cheaper here with less against them from the start.You went broke farming because of the tariff, you had bigger problems than the tariff. The ice was breaking under your feet already. If it wasn't the tariff, it would be something else.Joe Biden just signed executive action to kill fossil fuels and reduce carbon to zero by, I think 2050. Think farmers are happy about that? Nope. Why? Equipment runs on diesel, less commonly on gasoline or propane. Every farm, every single one, has two or three tractors, MINIMUM. At anywhere from $30,000 to $300,000 or more for new tractors that's a tough sell. What about a new combine? They run on diesel too. The new X9 John Deere combine? It costs a cool one million dollars. Yes, that is seven zeroes after the one. We don't just replace this stuff lightly. There are plenty of tractors out there, being used every day that are older than me, and I am middle aged. Why else? We heat with propane out here, mostly. We dry things like corn with propane. Many agricultural chemicals are made with petroleum or petroleum products.What else produces carbon? Cattle do. I've always liked cattle. Many farmers do. Many feed cattle out. Many have cows and calves. Many people just enjoy them as a hobby. Their form of therapy. You think they are going to let someone take that away from them? Can they come and take away your living? Part of it? What about that 63′ Corvette convertible you rub with a diaper and cost you a year's salary and is your baby? No? Then you can't have the cattle, sorry if they belch.Let's circle back to fuel for a second. Modern combine burns ten gallons an hour. Fuel here was about $1.75 a gallon for gas, diesel about $2.00 before the elections. Diesel is already up to about $2.45 and gas about $2.10. Why? His name is Joe Biden. Think farmers like having higher production costs? No. No business does. Many guys are talking about buying four and five years worth of fuel and storing it on farm as insulation against Biden's policies.There is the potential that Biden's Green New Deal would clamp down on fertilizers we use and make costs go up. Where is his supposed renewable energy coming from? I've heard wind mentioned. Asked any farmers how they like farming around the wind turbines? Most regret the decision to sell the land they are on. They get to farm around them forever now. I used to farm some ground that had high power lines running through. You know, the big steel towers? They suck to farm around. How many stories do you want of dinged up equipment where someone clocked the tower? How about when an ice storm took one out and the lines landed on a barn and fried a half dozen cattle? Or when they tore the hell out of the field and lowered it's productivity to put the tower back up? Yeah, hard pass. What about ranchers who graze their herds on BLM or Forest Service leases? I've heard rumors Biden plans to do some cutting back on those. Those guys great, great-grandaddy's grazed cattle there. He wants to break them by cutting leases? That doesn't win you votes.Joe says he's not going to do anything about gun control. Haha! How many clips do you want of him saying that's his plan? Why does this matter to farmers or ranchers? We are on our own out here, for the most part. Not too long back, I was out of town overnight for a few days. My wife was home alone. Two idiots, both probably smacked out of their minds on drugs, tried to break into our home through the guest room window. They weren't even deterred by our German Shepherd barking her head off. My wife called the sheriff of course, took them 15-20 minutes to get here. And that was sirens wailing and guns blazing. She also told the cops if those guys came through the window she was opening fire as she had a gun in her hand. And we aren't living on the moon. It can be eighty miles between some of these remote ranches and town. Yes, eighty. Eight zero. Freddy Krueger's at the door, cops are an hour away, what's it gonna be? Cops arrive in time to bag and tag you or you smoke Freddy with a hand cannon and ask him if he feels lucky? I can tell you which one I'm picking. Biden would LOVE to pull a gun grab. He'd Lalalalala-LOVE to defund the police. Coyotes, foxes, cougars (not that kind!), wolves, bears, raccoons, possums, stray dogs. Those are calf killers, spreaders of disease, raid gardens, steal feed, kill chickens. We frown on that out here in the countryside. And calling Ghostbusters isn't an option. We kind of abide by the “You loot, we shoot" mentality out here.Joe Biden is planning to change how inheritance taxes work, including 1031 exchanges. That's important in generational businesses for being able to continue, especially farms. Nobody wants to see their century farm be broken by taxation. But that is on the table with the Biden administration.So, without continuing on, I ask you again, who should they have voted for as a viable candidate? There wasn't a Harry Truman or a Dwight Eisenhower, (or, going out on a limb here, a Jerry Litton) where they would actually have at least somewhat of a grasp of agriculture, in the race. So that's out. Neither of the alternative candidates can win, and one you could never support anyway. So, you have to pick between the two that are left. Option one. You don't cast a ballot. That's not something I advise. Option Two. You pick the abrasive guy. You know he may not go about things right but you can probably live with the resulting fallout and hope he does better next time. Option Three. You vote for the experienced (supposedly) guy because he's smoother. Maybe he'll handle Covid better. Maybe he'll do better with trade agreements. You also know he'll screw you in a way that you probably CAN'T live with the results and their fallout knowing that there may not be a next time given his agenda.Now, choose.
