The basic idea is to remove Christianity from the dating systems used. The idea behind this is that history isn’t exclusive to Christianity and also that history shouldn’t be written through the eyes of a single religion. Considering Christianity hasn’t been around all that long it seems silly to use Christian dating for non-Christian subjects.The idea is to then change to the Common Era. The Common Era is used because worldwide the Christian dating system is prevalent. A quick fix is to rename the years. This is also linked to what AD stands for. It roughly translates as year of our lord. Now if you aren’t Christian he isn’t your lord. On top of that before Christ insinuates you believe in the concept of Christ.To be more inclusive you remove religion and make the dating secular. Awesome a victory of reason over religion right? Perhaps not.Here follows my opinion:When using a dating system of a religion, whether you believe in that religions tenets or not, it is polite to use their dating nomenclature. Simply changing the naming is often seen as a direct attack on that religion. It also insinuates that the Common Era is also based on Christianity. This is not the case for the world outside of Europe and those countries that were spawned from Europe.What happens is that you are not removing Christianity as intended but rather reinforcing it. This is the opposite of the original intention. The dating is still based on that single religion.The idea is to make it simple so people can understand it. That part worked.If you want to use a secular dating system we do have one. In fact it is frequently used across archaeology and history. Usually it appears when talking about prehistory. The further back you go the more likely it is to be used. This is the BP system. That is before present.Now you may think hey but that is movable isn’t it? Well no actually present is set at 1950. The reasoning for this is the prevalence of nuclear fallout within earth’s atmosphere. After that date carbon dating gets messy and goes wrong. So carbon dating sets up the date as before 1950.The problem here is that we have used BC and AD for so long it is part of everything. It is too integrated to be changed easily or at all. It also requires knowing about the concept. To use BP would make the dissemination of historical information more difficult. People also convert BP into BC and AD to understand it better. Think someone in the UK converting metric to imperial in their head.The dating system we have is so integral that we can’t shift the whole system. Add in that we have a largely non-Christian group as far as historians are concerned and you end up with a half-way house. That is that there is a common era dating using the old dates with a new name.When you add it all together all that has happened is that Christians get annoyed by it. The dating system hasn’t changed at all. The notion is now that the world runs by western standards of Common Era which is just as bad as Christian dating. At least Christians are all over the world.It is yet another let’s try to be nice but end up insulting more people than we make happy idea. Personally I don’t use it. The coffins, sealed more than 2,500 years ago, dating back to the Late Period of ancient Egypt, from about the sixth or seventh century BC.An unknown number of additional coffins may still lie buried there, the tourism and antiquities minister, Khaled al-Anani, said at the site, near the 4,700-year-old pyramid of Djoser.The majority of coffins housed mummified remains which initial research suggests would have been priests, top officials, and elites in ancient Egyptian society.All of whom would have likely been subject to ancient Egypt's complex burial rituals after they died, including having their brains removed with an iron hook.In addition to the coffins, a carved bronze statue of the god Nefertum inlaid with precious stones, was discovered, as was a collection of 28 statues of Ptah-Soker, the main god of Saqqara. Collections of amulets and an ushabti figurine were also found.The Egyptian archaeological mission behind the discovery began digging in 2018. Prior discoveries included a cache of mummified animals and the well-preserved tomb of a fifth dynasty royal priest called “Wahtye.”The mission will continue opening the coffins and studying their contents before their eventual display at the Grand Egyptian Museum, expected to open next year.
